Nike terminates relationship with Manny Pacquiao after anti-gay comments

Nike has severed their nearly decade-long relationship with superstar boxer Manny Pacquiao because of his recent anti-gay comments.

In his remarks, the basketball-loving Pacquiao said that gay people in relationships were “worse than animals” during a television interview in the Philippines where he’s a member of the country’s House of Representatives and is currently running for the country’s senate.

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent,” Nike said in their announcement dropping the 37-year old boxer from their roster of sponsored athletes. “Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.”

This isnt the first time that Pacquiao has spoken up against homosexuality, back in 2013 he discussed President Obama’s support of marriage equality.

“God’s words first … obey God’s law first before considering the laws of man. God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other. It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old.”

A quick look at Nike’s website shows that any items with Pacquiao’s name, branding or logo were removed from Nike’s online store. Even if Pacquiao continues as a politician, it will be difficult for the diminutive boxer to find sponsorships — especially those that have Western ties.

Undeterred, Pacquiao said that he was “just telling the truth of what the Bible says” on his Facebook page. However, after receiving some blowback, Pacquiao gave one of those kind-of-sort-of apologies famous after celebrities put their foot in their mouth.

On Tuesday, Pacquiao posted a video to Twitter, “I’m sorry for comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. I love you all with the love of the Lord. I am praying for you.”

In the video, you can see Pacquiao wearing a Nike shirt with the Pacquiao logo.
