Bobcats May Change Name Back to Hornets

Now that the New Orleans Hornets have officially changed their team nickname to the Pelicans, the Charlotte Bobcats may want the Hornets name back.

Charlotte’s NBA franchise was last known as the Hornets in 2002, but according to CBSSports.com, the team has begun the process of reverting back to the old name, which could take up to 18 months according to NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver.

Bobcats chairman and owner Michael Jordan said that the team hired a national polling group back in February to get a sense of how fans felt. Though Jordan said reaction was “very mixed”, numerous grassroots campaigns to change to the name back suggest that North Carolinians prefer the Hornets moniker.

Since the league owns the Hornets name, Silver said making the switch would not be an issue. The only time consuming part of the process would be for Charlotte to acquire the digital assets, including Hornets.com and CharlotteHornets.com, which currently redirect to NBA.com/Pelicans.

Charlotte fans have a soft spot in their hearts for the Hornets name, as it is associated with the more successful times the city has known. As the Bobcats, Charlotte fans have endured some of the worst seasons in NBA history and have not celebrated a winning season with the expansion franchise.
