Bobcats Hire Lakers Assistant Steve Clifford as New Head Coach

After another dismal season, the Charlotte Bobcats decided to make another coaching change, firing Mike Dunlap last month. This week, the team found its new head man in Los Angeles Lakers assistant Steve Clifford.

According to ESPN.com, Clifford and the team have agreed to a three-year contract worth $6 million.

Clifford had worked with the Lakers for only one season, but spent five years as an assistant under Stan Van Gundy with the Orlando Magic from 2007-2012. Like the Bobcats’ previous coach, Dunlap, Clifford has no NBA head coaching experience. However, after a 21-61 finish in 2012-2013, the organization was likely looking for someone with some fresh ideas on how to turn the team around.

Dunlap was often criticized for poor game management and for benching the team’s best players at crucial moments. We’ll see if Clifford can correct those mistakes.

We shouldn’t expect things to turn around in one season, but the team hopes Clifford will help them build toward a brighter future and at some point, their first winning season.
