Wichita State achieved something that no other team in NCAA history has achieved this season…a 35-0 record. Unfortunately for Shockers fans, the one-and-done Wildcats have finally started to grow into the hype surrounding the highly touted freshman during the 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Wildcats were able to land the first loss on the Shockers otherwise perfect season today winning a tightly contested match 78-76.
Wichita State Shockers vs Kentucky Wildcats Summary
During the game, the Wildcats’ twins Andrew and Aaron Harrison led the way with 20 and 19 points respectfully. Wichita State had a chance to win the game at the end with Fred VanFleet taking a NBA-deep three pointer that didn’t quite make it to seal the victory for John Calipari’s Wildcats. The Cats also saw significant contributions from James Young who had 13 points and the double-double machine Julius Randle who chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kentucky was able to make a number of clutch free throws down the stretch to improve their 2013-14 record to 26-10. The Shockers were led by Cleanthony Early who scored 31 and Ron Baker who had 20 points. The Shockers (35-1) suffered their first loss since the 2013 Final Four against the Louisville Cardinals.
Will Calipari Go 2-0 Against Pitino this Year?
This will be the second matchup in the NCAA Tournament between the Rick Pitino led Louisville Cardinals and John Calipari led Kentucky Wildcats in the past three years. Kentucky will take on their in-state rival, Louisville in the Sweet 16 in Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday March 28th, 2014. This will be the second matchup between the two storied schools during the 2013-14 NCAA Men’s Basketball season. Calipari’s Wildcats were able to beat the defending 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Champions earlier in the year at home by a score of 73-66. Since that game in late December, the Cardinals have gone on an absolute tear last losing on March 1st, 2014 against the Memphis Tigers. The Wildcats; however, are really starting to come into their own having a strong showing in the SEC Tournament and really proving their mettle in the 2014 NCAA Tournament with victories over #9 Seed K-State and #1 Seed Wichita State.
