After achieving nearly everything he could in two years at Michigan, Trey Burke has decided to take his talents to the next level.
According to ESPN.com, Burke officially announced Sunday he will enter the 2013 NBA draft. He could have returned to a Michigan team that likely would have contended for a national title again, but he made the decision to fulfill his lifetime goal of making it to the pros.
“It’s always been a dream for me to play in the NBA,” Burke said.
Although Burke’s Wolverines came up just short in the national championship, his individual season garnered him plenty of attention and numerous awards, including the AP Player of the Year and the Wooden Award. His fine season increased his draft stock dramatically, as most experts now project him to be a lottery selection.
Burke finished his Michigan career with 416 assists, which ranks him seventh in school history, despite only playing two years. His 260 assists in 2012-2013 set the single-season record at Michigan and his 727 points was the fifth-best single season in school history.
“He filled a great void and did it as well as anyone here ever has done,” Michigan coach John Beilein said.
As a versatile point guard, who distributes and shoots the ball well, there’s no doubt Burke will be a dynamic addition to any NBA squad. We look forward to watching him play in the professional ranks next season.
