The Battle of Unbeatens: Minnesota Lynx vs. Los Angeles Sparks

Candace Parker drives by Maya MooreA week ago, we weren’t sure if both the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks could maintain their undefeated seasons going into their first match-up of the season.

Both teams went 2-0 in the last week with the Lynx dominating the Indiana Fever 87-63 in a match up of last year’s WNBA Finals then downed the Seattle Storm 86-84 to go to 11-0. The Sparks took down the Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury to set up the Battle of the Unbeatens.

The Sparks and Lynx go into tomorrow’s game having both won 11 consecutive games to start the season. On Wednesday, one of those teams will own the all-time record with 12 wins and no losses.

And they’re not just beating teams, they’re doing so by large margins:

On the season, the Sparks have the edge, outscoring their opponents by an average of 15.6 points compared to an 13.7 points for the Lynx. To give some perspective on how good that is, the next highest average win margin is 3.1 by the New York Liberty.

Per usual, it’s Maya Moore leading the defending champion Lynx in scoring with serious support from Sylvia FowlesSeimone Augustus, and Lindsay Whalen.

For the Sparks, it’s the two-headed frontcourt attack of the super-efficient Nneka Ogwumike and the all-purpose work of Candace Parker, with Kristi Toliver running the show at point.

For some reason, the game of the season is being played at 3:30 Eastern / 12:30 Pacific on a weekday. The game will be featured on NBATV.
