Woman Dunks: Brittney Griner’s 1st College Slam (Video)

Brittney Griner, the 6-8 (2,03cm) Freshman for Baylor star, finally threw down her first dunk last night in a 104-45 Baylor victory over Jacksonville State.

The dunk put Griner in good company as one of only seven female NCAA players to have ever dunked in a game.

After a couple botched attempts in her two previous games, Griner’s dunk places her in company with six other women that have dunked in a college game: Candance Parker (6-4 Tennessee), Sylvia Fowles (6-6, LSU), Michelle Snow (6-5, Tennessee), Sancho Lyttle (6-4, Houston), Charlotte Smith (6-0 [!], North Carolina), and Georgeann Wells (6-7, West Virginia), the first woman to dunk in 1984.

The six women to have dunked before Griner put up a total of 15 dunks altogether; Parker, the sister of NBA player Anthony Parker, recorded seven of those dunks herself. Parker, Fowles, and Snow all went on to have WNBA All-Star careers.

“I’m impressed. I think that is awesome for the women’s game… Glad (Griner) did it in the half court set!” said Parker (via Twitter)

Look for Griner to break or tie that record in her first season, and shatter it before her college career is over (depending if she stays more than one year, injury-free).

The difference between Brittney Griner and Parker, Snow, Fowles, Wells, and even Lisa Leslia of the WNBA, is that Griner doesn’t need a running start or a breakaway. The 6-8 center can take a pass, take one step, amd dunk effortlessly and with regularity as she did last night.

That’s not putting down any of the other dunking women, it’s just looks and is so much easier for her to dunk with her hands, size, and ability to explode off two feet.

Griner dominated her competition in high school (as seen in the photo left), dunking more than 50 times (52 to be exact) in just 32 games. She also averaged 12 blocks per game for Nimitz High in Houston, Texas.
