Not only did they Shock the Spurs they dominated them in the first round of the playoffs. And it was in no small part to the contributions of their huge frontline, led by Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol.
If Zach Randolph isn’t careful, he might develop a reputation for becoming a clutch player. Z-bo hit a unexected, huge three-pointer in game three to seal the game and was simply amazing down the stretch of game six, hitting tough shot after tough shot to quell any chance of another Spur’s comeback.
Z-bo continues to outdo himself every game, setting playoff career-highs in three consecuvtive games. His stats (21.5 points/9.1 rebounds) do not accurately reflect the true impact he had on the Spurs series.
The 6-9, 260lb Randolph looked unstoppable in this year’s playoffs, making 50% of his shots. However, when Randolph did miss a shot, it seems as if Marc Gasol was there to clean it up.
The younger Gasol, who is 7-1 and 265lbs, dwarfed San Antonio’s frontline, physically abusing the slighter Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter and Antonio McDyess. The Tank averaged 14 points, 12.3 rebounds, and shot 53% from the field against the Spurs.
In game one versus the Thunder, the tandem was at it again. Randolph hit another playoff career high with 34 points (11-22 FG) and grabbing 10 rebounds while Gasol tallied 20 points (9-11 shooting) and 13 rebounds in the win.
Memphis visits Oklahoma City for game two on Tuesday.
