Rubio leaves DKV, Eyenga stays, Ilyasova returns to NBA

The 2009 NBA Draft has kept the Spanish league busy this summer, particularly club team DKV Joventut; Ricky Rubio‘s decision to leave the Spanish club after buyout negotiations was reported a couple days ago, Christian Eyenga has decided to remain with the Spanish team to hone his skills, and Ersan İlyasova may be returning to the NBA.

Rubio drama continues…Christian Eyenga shoots a hald-court shot during NBA summer league
The Ricky Rubio soap opera continues.  Pre-draft rumors and speculation that drafting Rubio would be a huge hassle is looking more and more prescient.

Rubio’s contract discussions with Joventut hasn’t gone well at all, and now it seems they are ready to part ways because of the lack of compromise between the two sides concerning his hefty contract buyout.  Whatever comes, the only real certainty is that Rubio won’t be donning a Joventut jersey this next season.

Even with the contract problems with DKV, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Rubio will be going to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team that drafted him fifth overall this year, this coming season.

“I want to continue with the (Joventut) but, after everything that’s happened, I don’t think they’re too comfortable having me in their squad.” Rubio said.

Since signing with the team at age 14, Rubio has spent his entire professional career with Joventut.  It is rumored that other ACB franchises are interested in Rubio’s services, mainly Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Eyenga signs 3-year deal with DKV Joventut
On the other hand, Christian Eyenga, the 6-5 Congalese shooting guard, has signed with DKV instead of heading stateside to join LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The 20-year old believes that he isn’t quite ready for the NBA.

“I think that as a player I still don’t feel ready to play in the NBA,” Eyenga said. “For that I preferred to stay with DKV Joventut now.”

Eyenga averaged nearly nine points on 47% shooting during the 2009 NBA summer league and spent last season with Prat Joventut, the DKV Joventut’s junior team.

“I thank Cleveland for selecting me in the first round of the draft but I think the best option for me this season was to play here, and we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Eyenga shares the same agent as Ricky Rubio, David Kahn, and the agent has promised that Cleveland would not have to deal with a contract buyout when the time comes that Eyenga is ready to join the Cavs.

Ersan İlyasova back in Milwaukee
It looks as Ersan İlyasova, the 6-10 Turkish forward, may be returning to the Milwukee Bucks and the NBA after two seasons in Spain.

The Bucks selected Ilyasova in the second round of the 2005 draft, but was relegated to the  Tulsa 66ers of the NBDL for his initial American season.  The next season, Ilyasova made his NBA debut, playing in 66 games and averaged 6.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in 2006-07.

After the 2006-07 campaign, Ilyasova returned to Europe and played the next two seasons with Spain’s Regal FC Barcelona, where he was the club’s first Turkish player. In last year’s Euroleague season, Ilaysova helped Barcelona reach the Final Four with averages of 10.7 points and 7.6 rebounds before losing in the semifinals.

The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to contract terms with Ilyasova, which is reportedly for three-years, $7 million and requires a buyout, but is first subject to clearance from Regal Barcelona.

Ilyasova’s NBA role will be much larger this season with the experience he has garnered overseas as well as Charlie Villanueva’s departure to the Detroit Pistons.
