After completing the biggest signing of the 2013 offseason, the Houston Rockets decided they needed another strong veteran to fortify their frontcourt and increase depth.
According to ESPN.com, the Rockets agreed to a one-year contract with Marcus Camby for the veteran minimum of $1.4 million. Camby spent the 2012-2013 season with the New York Knicks before being traded to the Toronto Raptors for Andrea Bargnani earlier this month. The Raptors then bought out his contract, making him a free agent.
“Marcus is extremely excited to be coming back to the Rockets,” Camby’s agent, Rick Kaplan, told Houston’s KRIV-TV, a Fox affiliate. “He believes he can add vetreran leadership to a potent young core that can compete for the NBA title. It is a great opportunity for him and huge plus for the Rockets.”
The 39-year-old Camby only appeared in 24 games for the Knicks last year, averaging 1.8 points per game, but brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to a relatively young Rockets squad as a former defensive player of the year. He also is familiar with the franchise, as he played 19 games with the Rockets in 2011-2012.
Camby, who has spent most of his career as a true center, now joins the newly acquired Dwight Howard and former Rockets starter Omer Asik as the third center on the roster. Asik demanded a trade after Howard was brought in, but the organization said it had no plans to move him. However, with the addition of Camby, it’s possible that plan has changed.
