With Jeremy Lin and Tyreke Evans both recording triple-doubles off the bench this season – we wondered: how many NBA players have pulled off that rare feat in a reserve role?
Obviously, a triple double is a difficult accomplishment for any player but for a bench player, it’s inherently less-likely. Bench players generally play less minutes, so it’s even more interesting to think about how efficient bench players must be when they’re able to pull it off.
The bench triple double has only happened 18 times in the last 29 years by 15 different players. Here they are chronologically:

It’s weird to think that superstar Clyde Drexler came off the bench at any point of his career. Drexler’s bench triple doubles came during his third NBA season (85-86) with the Portland Trailblazers – he eventually overtook the starting position from Jim Paxson that season. Paxson was an NBA all-star in 82-83 and 83-84.
Here’s some more facts within the stats:
- Detlef Schrempf accomplished triple doubles off the bench three times in his career in 1991, 1992, and 1993.
- Clyde Drexler recorded a triple double off the bench for the Trailblazers twice in three games! The game off the bench in which he didn’t get the triple double? He still had 23 points, 12 assists and 7 rebounds in 40 minutes.
- Jeremy Lin is only one of three players to have accomplished the triple-double in less than 30 minutes of play, along with Brian Shaw and Rod Strickland.
- All but two of the triple doubles have been accomplished with the standard points, rebounds, and assists. Shawn Bradley and Larry Sanders came off the bench to block more than 10 shots (in place of assists).
- No one has ever pulled the elusive quadruple double – the closest? John Williams had 11 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists and 5 steals for the Washington Bullets (remember them?)
