NBA May Introduce Reviews of Charge/Block Calls in Instant Replay

The NBA’s competition committee had a lot to discuss at their meeting on Wednesday – including plans to increase penalties for flopping violations – but another issue weighing on members’ minds was whether or not to expand instant replay to cover charging and blocking calls.

According to ESPN.com, the committee came to a conclusion and is officially recommending that the league include charging and blocking calls in instant replay reviews, but only in late-game situations. If the league ends up adopting the rule, it would mark the first time judgement calls would be reviewable.

Under the current rule, instant replay can only be used in situations where the video clearly shows the outcome of a play, including out-of-bounds calls, shot-clock violation calls, distinguishing between two and three-pointers and determining whether a defender taking a charge was in the restricted area or not.

The league’s board of governors would have to approve the rule change to make things official, but it definitely seems like the league wants to take as much referee error out of the game as possible. Let’s just hope these extra reviews help them get the calls correct without slowing the game down too much.
