LeBron to Duncan: “I gave the media something to talk about”

LeBron James and Tim Duncan before 2014 NBA Finals

As the San Antonio and Miami Heat players gathered at center court for the jumpball and the start of  game one of the NBA Finals, LeBron James walked up to Tim Duncan and said to the future Hall of Famer:

Me and you, huh” said James as he approached Duncan before tipoff, “Again huh?” The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs are meeting for the second consecutive NBA Finals, and the third time that LeBron and Duncan have faced off (when James was with Cleveland they were swept by the Spurs in 2007 Finals).

As Duncan does, he just stared blankly at LeBron until James referenced the recent “trash talking” drama that the media has latched onto the days leading up to tonight’s game.

I gave the media something to talk about,” James said cracking a big toothy smile, “because they got nothing else to talk about.”

LeBron James makes Tim Duncan smile

That comment got the stoic Duncan to smile. It was a nice, light short chat before the intensity of the NBA Championship was to begin in less than a minute on ABC.

The whole “trash talk” incident started with an innocuous We’ve got four more to win. We’ll do it this time” comment that future NBA Hall of Famer Duncan made after eliminating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.

LeBron, when the media approached him about the comment, played it up by saying “They don’t like us. I can sense that from Tim’s comments the past couple days” which poured fuel on the fire.

Much ado about nothing.
