Is Bismack Biyombo the steal of this year’s free agency?

After the dust is settled and all of those max contracts prove to be right or wrong for the franchise, the analysts will start evaluating the low profile free agency steals of the summer. One of those steals could be young defensive center Bismack Biyombo  who was signed by the Toronto Raptors on a two year deal worth $6 million.

The player is the second signing for the Raptors this off-season after they acquired DeMarre Carroll, and both of these players should represent a more physical defense in the upcoming season. The Raptors already lost Amir Johnson to the Boston Celtics and it seems like they’re trying to add depth on the center spot with a 22 year old prospect.

Just for comparison Biyombo averaged 8.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per 36 minutes for the Hornets last year, while Johnson had 12.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.1 block per 36 minutes for the Raptors. It seems like the Raptors saved around $9 million in cap space while adding a player with similar style of play.
