Grizzlies Acquire Fab Melo From Celtics

After spending much of his first professional season in the NBA’s Developmental League, former first-round pick Fab Melo has been traded to a team that may give him some actual playing time.

According to ESPN.com, the Boston Celtics traded Melo to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday for forward Donte Greene. The Celtics drafted Melo 22nd overall in 2012, but failed to find room for him, sending him down to the D-League for nearly all of last season. He appeared in just six games for the Celtics, averaging 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds in six minutes per game.

However, when given the chance to play, he thrived with the Maine Red Claws, averaging 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and a league-high 3.1 blocks per contest. He was even named to the D-League All-Defensive first team and the All-Rookie first team.

Although he seemed to be improving, Melo failed to impress the Celtics at last month’s summer league. His underwhelming performance at the camp, combined with the Celtics’ acquisition of rookie center Kelly Olynyk, forced the franchise to deal him.

Memphis’ defensive-minded playing style seems like a great fit for Melo, but as the third center on the squad – behind NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol and Kosta Koufos – he may have trouble carving out a spot for himself again.
