Watch Magic Johnson and other NBA players take on Turkish pro team Ülkersport in 1995

When Magic Johnson retired from the NBA in 1991 after announcing that he tested positive for HIV, he was away from the league for nearly five years.

Save for an honorary appearance at the 1992 NBA All-Star Game in which he took home the MVP trophy and playing with the 1992 NBA Dream Team, Johnson didn’t have many options for high-level basketball in the years that followed.

Magic’s All-Stars vs. Ulkersport Instanbul (1995)

One of the ways that Magic stayed in basketball shape was bringing a team of former NBA players dubbed “Magic’s All-Stars”. The team featured Magic, former NBA All-Star Mark Aguirre as well as John Long, Mike McGee, David Henderson, Lester Connor, and Jim Farmer.

In September of 1995, the team would take on Ülkerspor İstanbul and you can watch the full game in all it’s 1995 video quality-glory.

Ülkersport had homegrown players Harun Erdenay, Orhun Ene, Murat Murathanoğlu, İsmet Badem, and former NBA player Charles Shackleford.

Magic’s All-Stars jumped out to a big 20-4 lead and would go up 39-17 in the first half before jumping out to a 76=40 lead at halftime. The match was more a show for Magic than it was a competitive game as the All-Stars thumped the Ulkersport 148-102 and fittingly ended with a Magic Johnson half court shot that beat the buzzer that inspired the fans and media to storm the court. Check the magical shot at 1:41:00 mark of the video.
