The complete 2016 Rio Olympics basketball schedule is now set. One of the most anticipated international basketball tournaments of the year will kick off with group level play in Rio on August 6th. The Olympic tournament is setup to send the top four teams in each group on to the knockout round similar to major soccer tournaments. This round, also known as the quarterfinals, will commenced on August 17th and the Gold and Bronze medal games will take place on August 21st. Despite some of the rumors to the contrary, the overall Summer Olympics schedule is expected to take place on-time without any delays. Many of the popular International teams such as the United States that have earned sports in the tournament will play several friendlies against upper-tier FIBA competitors prior to time to kick off the Rio Games.

When did the Final Olympic Qualifying Tournaments Take Place?

Heading into the early summer, there were still three open spots left for the 2016 Games. The final three qualifying tournaments were held in Manila, Belgrade, and Turin (Italy) respectfully between July 4th and July 2016. The remainder of the Olympic field earned their berths in various qualifying tournaments held by FIBA over the past year across the world. The final three teams to earn Olympic berths include Croatia, France and Serbia.
