It seems as if all coaches – no matter which level they coach at – dream of making it to the NBA. Of course, only the best get can consider making the jump to the pros a real possibility and even a more select group actually get the opportunity.
Though his name hasn’t come up on many NBA coaching wishlists lately, Kansas’ Bill Self is definitely at, or near the top of the college coaching ranks. And with all of his success, he’s naturally thought about what he would do if an NBA team came knocking.
“It hasn’t really tempted me because I haven’t had that many people talk to me about it,” Self said told The Oklahoman on Monday, according to ESPN.com. “But at some point and time, sure, I think it would.
“It would be great to be able to match wits with the best athletes in the world, but I’m certainly happy where I’m at.”
Last year, Kansas signed Self to a contract extension through the 2021-2022 season, but it doesn’t include a buyout-penalty clause, meaning Self could make the jump without facing financial repercussions. However, for now, he still feels somewhat obligated to fulfill the terms of the new deal.
“I’m not saying I never would,” Self said of coaching in the NBA. “But I’m locked in.”
With a winning program, solid recruiting prospects and a supportive fan base at Kansas, it would probably take a very lucrative offer to entice Self to leave.
“The biggest thing is you will never be happy as a coach unless you know you can attract good players,” Self said. “I’m fortunate to coach at a place where the product is so good we’re always going to get, at least I hope so, some pretty good players.
“I love it at Kansas, and they love basketball there. I’ve been very fortunate to coach at such a tradition-rich place.”
We’ve seen many college coaches fail to recapture the success at the pro level that they become so accustom to in college, so even though it represents many coaches’ dreams, there’s plenty of reasons to be apprehensive about making the move. We’ll see if Self sheds some of those hangups if he ever gets the big call.
