Basketball Wearables: European League places video cameras onto players’ jersey

basketball jersey camera wearableThe first professional basketball league to place video cameras on their players is the Euroleague.

The European basketball league will fashion two mini video cameras onto the jerseys of two players on Lithuanian club Zalgiris Kaunas — guard Edgaras Ulanovas and center Robertas Javtokas:

Euroleague Basketball’s commitment to enhancing the fan experience with new technologies will take a major leap forward this week when Turkish Airlines Euroleague become the first competition in major professional sports to test players wearing micro-cameras on their uniforms in an official game…. jersey cams will transmit live images to the game broadcast. The images will help put fans at the center of the action at game speed by giving them the exact same visual perspectives as the players themselves.

Javtokas and Ulanovas will have the basketball jersey cameras on during a game against Spanish club Real Madrid in the Euroleague’s Top 16 Round 14. The jersey cam wearable technology was created by First V1sion and will be positioned at the center of chest area of the player’s basketball jersey.

“Zalgiris Kaunas is happy to be a part of the new technologies. Our players are looking forward to try the jersey cameras in the Euroleague game and they are excited to see the outcome,” Paulius Motiejunas, Zalgiris Kaunas President, said. “The fans will be able to catch another dimension of the game, so they can enjoy it even more.”

It’s not the first time the league has tested out the jersey cams: referees and game officials have been testing out the cameras during game play since at least February 2015. And last year, the league tested out using Google Glass during live games.

Though there are problems to work out including the size of the camera, the perspective, image stabilization and safety, this is a huge step for pro sports to bring fans closer to the game. Sports leagues have “mic’d” up players for years so fans could hear the sounds of the game, so video was a logical next step.

With portable video technology, such as the technology found in our smart phones and GoPro, become smaller and more advanced, it’s inevitable to have jerseys with embedded video cameras.
