Almost every professional sports league around the world are currently battling the coronavirus crisis and will potentially not be able to end their current season.
For most of these leagues, their decision on whether they can come back or not will be down to them. However, the NBA may need to do things differently due to their close association with the NHL.
These two sports leagues have peacefully co-existed as their seasons overlapped one another. Not just that, but they play in many of the same cities and sometimes in the same buildings. The feeling is that they will only be able to come back together, which means the NBA and NHL can only return if they work together on scheduling.
Discussions surrounding a return have already taken place, and with both leagues hoping to hold some kind of playoffs to finish this season. No doubt, there will certainly be an appetite to come back from them both. For now, NBA fans can enjoy NBA league pass for free to keep them entertained during this blank period.
What we do have is two flexible leagues who can move things around if needed and that is going to help make something happen, if it is at all possible. Fans from all over the world like one or both leagues and with little other sport out there at the moment, it would be a huge boost to see these two leagues make a come back at some point.
With daily games taking place, both have always had big viewing figures and many people who like to bet on the games. Should things return to normal over the next few weeks and months then there will be plenty of live streaming options for most basketball fans. The sport will be keen to see fans and gamblers return to the NBA and pick up where they left off.
There have been many suggestions made as to how both the NBA and NHL can come back and complete their 2019-20 regular seasons and playoffs. These range from diving into the playoffs in May to holding fire and having the playoffs at the start of next season. None of these have been confirmed by either league as possibilities.
However, one thing that has been confirmed is that both leagues have asked their teams to inquire about arena availability over the summer, just in case it is needed. From an NBA point of view, this would rule out having a summer league this season, but there are bigger and clearly there are more important things to deal with right now.
