It was a wild day at the 2013 NBA draft on Thursday, as the first round featured plenty of surprises, unexpected moves and general excitement for NBA fans.
Though there wasn’t a clear-cut favorite to go first overall, the Cleveland Cavaliers started the night by shocking the basketball world as they selected UNLV forward Anthony Bennett, who wasn’t even in the top five on most teams’ draft boards.
“I’m just as surprised as anyone else,” said Bennett, who became the first Canadian to be selected No. 1 overall, according to ESPN.com.
With the second pick, the Orlando Magic also bypassed several of the highly-touted big men and went with Indiana guard Victor Oladipo, who was more relieved than anything to be drafted.
“It’s like a weight vest you took off after running five miles,” Oladipo said. “It’s relaxing, man. But at the same time, you know it’s just getting started.”
Then things really started to get interesting. After Otto Porter went to the Wizards, Cody Zeller to the Bobcats and Alex Len found a home with the Phoenix Suns, Kentucky standout Nerlens Noel – who many experts thought would go No. 1 – fell to the sixth spot with the New Orleans Pelicans. However, in an even more surprising move, the Pelicans traded Noel to the Philadelphia 76ers for all-star guard Jrue Holiday and a 2014 first round pick.
While the Pelicans certainly didn’t need another young big man after drafting Anthony Davis with the first overall pick last year, many though the move was too risky on Philadelphia’s part, as it traded away arguably its best player and another valuable pick for a talented, yet unproven player.
But the trade was only one of many to come.
After drafting last season’s AP player of the year from Michigan, Trey Burke, the Minnesota Timberwolves later dealt him to Utah for both of the Jazz’s first round picks, Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng.
The Dallas Mavericks then traded the long-haired center from Gonzaga, Kelly Olynyk, to the Boston Celtics for their 16th pick the after drafting him with the 13th.
