Does interbasket allowed pretenders here? Like SMART MVP who posts and claims he's none other than Manny V. Pangilinan himself..

why? I am Smart I am MVP in my baranggay liga as well! I am not a pretender

the games against canadian teams and ABA is not recommended as they dont give good competition other than a feel-good victories for gilas. i guess gilas can use them as workouts . the canadian trip in my opinion is more of a public relations tour...i would have preferred that gilas play against NCAA Division 1 teams

With all due respect, I would tend to agree and disagree.

I would agree, it could be public relations, but nevertheless it may boost support in the future from Canadian & perhaps even US basketball officials. Its always good to have a strong network within the FIBA community.

As to competition, even if they may be younger or lesser talent, its best also to see how SG responds to such competition. Its not for the purpose of a workout but a response check as well a learning avenue to understand what part of their game needs improvement against suich type of competition.

Its great to go against stronger, better, taller competition, but different types of competition brings different learning experiences impactful in future meaningful games. I'm sure you've watched teams that are David's against Goliath's but become ordinary teams against weaker competition. SG must respond with strength, & aggressiveness and every game through their most important tournaments be whatever competition.

Thats how I see it.

i have watched in person how ABA teams play. for example when Talk n Text was in california they played several games against ABA teams. they have simple offensive/defensive patterns and use the usual boring low post moves for their big guys(to show that he is a bigger gorilla) plus their games is not uptempo, at least for the games i saw ,,,, so in this respect gilas will not learn much playing against teams with basic systems.

regarding canadian players, i used to be an exchange student in canada, and i ran rings around players 6-8 inches inches taller than me more because their motor skills is more attuned to ice hockey or football whereas i had more basketball sense from playing it for many years. this was back then and i do notice they have improved a bit, but not much as evidenced by the fact that univ of british columbia won only by close margins against the smaller Ateneo team when the latter visited canada last year.

univ of british columbia also visited manila in the late 1980s or early 1990s(forgot exactly when) and they got beaten really bad by PBL teams, i watched one of the games at rizal memorial coloseum and Purefoods-PBL team with babilonia(not sure), 6'6" poblador, etc beat them easy.

and in 2003 - 2004(forgot exactly which year) they got beat bad(lampaso) by PBA teams.

I would estimate the top-ranked college teams of canada as the same level as PBL or Liga Pilipinas teams even today.

even Chot reyes , taulava and other powerade players before have been quoted that they learned the most when they were in serbia so yes, gilas will still learn something playing against this canadian and aba teams but not as much as playing against teams with sophisticated offensive/defensive systems and/or super-fast atheltic players(division 1 NCAA).

of course, I would love to be proven wrong if the ABA teams and canadian teams and beat Gilas really bad this year then that would make me happy because that would be another toughening experience for Gilas

It would have been better if they'll play US NCAA Div 1 teams..but it would be costly to move around US, hopping from 1 location to another..that is if they can actually find NCAA Div 1 teams willing to play with them at this time of the year..

Next to impossible to play US NCAA schools. US schools are now on their final push to finish the school year. A number of schools do not have the luxury of keeping their star players who are graduating or those who have declared for the NBA. Those players leave school to prepare on their own at places like Attack Athletics in Chicago, LA and Vegas camp of Joa Abunasar and the Indianapolis and Florida camp. The college teams stops their regular practices once their season is over and the NCAA have strict rules that schools must follow. It is better to arrange games against US colleges during their preseason in the fall.

Team Gilas will play 2-3 games in Vancouver. I believe they will play games against the top Canadian college team of the University of British Columbia. The other game is against Simon Fraser and maybe a third game with a small college team. Both UBC and Simon Fraser can be classified as Division II NCAA teams with some size. This was the same teams ADMU played last year during their visit to Vancouver on their way to Vegas.

Is there any idea what are the teams that gilas would play since NCAA teams are not available..thanks

which team would have the homecourt advantage?
Does the college team have a lot of supporters? Or are there more Gilas supporters in Canada?

On style of play (not player's attributes), are there any remarkable differences between the euro system and ncaa?

We are expecting a much bigger Filipino-Canadian crowd to watch the games with banderas (flags) and all. So, I guess, the visitors will get the homecourt advantange.... ;)

anyway, which ABA teams will they face?

final game will be against an All-Star team of top West Coast ABA Players.

I have a question, would there be a violation of US NCAA Eligibility Rules if a player currently playing for US College team or a High School player set to play for a US College Team is to play in the ABA.

when talk n text came here SEVERAL YEARS AGO , they won 1 or 2 of their 4 or 5 games ( i forgot na the # of games and other details) . i just remember mark Cardona saving talk n text in the game against the long beach team using his tear drop shots(semi-hook) and alapag using his foul-baiting free throws. the problem back then was that talk n text had a hard time matching up with the heft and height of the ABA teams because their offensive/defensive system was still pba/nba style which did not compensate for their smaller stature. for example, how the heck do you do back to the basket nba/pba moves when you have a bigger, faster and taller kingkong guarding you ?

by the way, los angeles slam team have that awesome ballhandler, "the bone collector" from AND1 streetball legends. he is about 5'9" to 5'10". i wonder how the Gilas team defense and Barroca , Tiu, etc will match up with him and and his streetball stuff =) so for those who love streetball , this is the game to watch

In the other thread U-17 RP team will play against Top US HS. this is really an event to look forward to. I'll have to ask my family members in Cali to watch it.

Hope that this'll be televised
