Actually Arwind is the focal point of Guiao's scrambling defence. That is more evident now that Kelly might not be around. I was laughing when one of Arwind's handlers said they had to sharpen Arwind's elbows which could used more often in these international games.

I min Arwind is a good shot blocker coz of his long arms and Jumping ability..very good rebounder as well not to mention his intangbles..He is a living highlight!!

who would be the primary defender of al khatid?
japeth? arwind, gabe or kerby?

gabe and arwind can check wright of jordan

maybe these is the best line up

guards
1, gabe

shooting guards
2,chris lutz

small forward
3, kelly

power forward
4, rabeh

center
5, japeth

on bench
solomon
andi mark
jared
Sean Anthony
kerby
arwind
Asi

what do you think sir nardy about this line up, small members but a good potencial players

It depends man..Yeng usually shifts the defence..During the Exhibition match they did a moving Zone which made scoring hard for the americans. Man to Man ill put Arwind or Dillinger or maybe Gabe then japeth will be waiting to block him if he decides to drive in the basket.

with Fadi's physicallity probably it's more of Jared. Then it's Kerby.

japeth looks small compared agaisnt the other big men of mid east... it doesnt matter if he starts or not. he'll have a hard timeeither way :p

Remember he is not a natural center but rather a forward. Asi and Mick will probably be in the middle and japeth will be there to help them with his long arms and athletic ability.

I'm excited Powerade Team PILIPINAS!

I'm excited Powerade Team PILIPINAS!

I'm also excited to watch Powerade Team Pilipinas...the players

1. Japeth Aguilar

2. Jay-jay Helterbrand

3. Gabe Norwwod

4. Jared Dilinger

5. Arwind Santos

6. James Yap

comment lang naman... RANIDEL DE OCAMPO - can shoot from outside but not quick, height 6'5" 1/2- too small for PF post against 6'8", 6'9" or 6'11" PF in China, S.Korea and other team in asia. Maraming option sa post nya likes of;
Jay Washington - 6'7" PF pwede rin SF can defend, can shoot from the outside, quick and can run, good built, etc...JR Reyes - 6'7" same as JWas plus young and trainable, versatile and a good role and Back up player to the RP NT.

he's a natural center.he played center in high school, Ateneo and WKU.

he's game though resembles that of a small forward minus the perimeter range.

for the rpteam, i think he can do more playing the PF position.

He does have a perimiter game..and he just need to bulk up a few pounds

knowing coach yeng, im sure he will field different starting five every game in jones cup...just to make sure the team will not be scouted and make the opposing team guessing..but for me arwind santos should be the fix player in the starting small forward position..

i think jared or ranidel(if he'll be included) will guard khatib..but i think it's better for jared to guard khatib because he is faster than khatib..faster guy can block the way of fadi..if kerby will guard fadi i think kerby will be eaten alive as kerby has slow footwork on defense.. i just wish kelly is included..as it will be kelly ver 2.0(improved since 2007) vs fadi el khatib..

i think coach yeng will hide our strategy against korea and japan in the jones cup..and will try to beat(but not show all) jordan, iran and lebanon in jones cup also to see if we can survive a tight game against them in the fiba asia..
well RP team might show their A-game against two of taiwan's team..hehe:D:D

according to the manila bulletin news june 21, 2009 excerpt:

"More than going back and play basketball again in the PBA, whats important now for Sta. Lucia Realty's prized forward Kelly Williams is to get healthy again.

Diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura or ITP, a kind of blood disorder of having a low platelet count, Williams is now recovering well through medications, a weekly visit at the Asian Hospital and rest in his Alabang Village residence.

In the first few weeks when I found out about this sickness, it was really heartbreaking, Williams, 27, told the Bulletin yesterday. ;But now I feel very strong. Physically, now I feel in my best shape."

if he is in the best shape now as the news mentions above, i wonder if williams is practicing bball again privately, and there will be a surprise anouncement soon ;) , but............. I feel that if williams cannot make it to the jones cup, then chances are very very small that he will still be on the powerade team.

I think Japeth will play more of a 4 than a 5..he and Sonny Thoss would be taking care of the power forward spot.Kerby will take care of the number 3 spot with Dillinger and I hope Kelly recovers soon.Arwin would move to the 2 spot with James and Gabe.So the final lineup I think would be like this:

c

Asi-Mick

pf

Japs-Sonny

sf

Kerby-Jared-Kelly

sg

James-Arwin-Gabe

pg

jayjay-willie

Thrice a week practices for RP 5 in time for Jones Cup, FIBA Asia
07/04/2009 | 07:02 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Powerade-Team Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao will enforce a thrice-a-week practice session for his team bound for the William Jones Cup tournament and the FIBA Asia Men’s Basketball Championship.

The Jones Cup, one of the toughest international tournaments once dominated by Filipinos 15 years ago, is set from July 18 to 26 at the Physical Education gym in Taipei.

The Nationals will meet a Jordan squad beefed up by American players Sam Daghlas and Rasheim Wright and seven-footer Jamal Ma’aytah in the 3:00 p.m. opening match.

“Starting next week, we will insert a Tuesday and Thursday practice from our regular Monday session," Guiao told GMANews.TV. “This is in preparation for the coming two international tournaments we’re participating in. We had an easier time in SEABA, but we’re in for a tough grind in the Jones Cup and FIBA Asia."

The Jones Cup tournament will serve as a tune-up for the Filipinos in their much-awaited FIBA Asia campaign, the qualifying tournament for the World Basketball Championship in Turkey next year.

Two years ago, the Filipinos finished ninth and Guiao and his troops hope to bounce back this time.

Signs are very encouraging for the Nationals after the Philippines got the luck of the draw being bracketed away from the so called “Group of Death" that includes defending champion Iran, host China and powerhouse Lebanon.

The Powerade-RP five also secured the services of Japeth Aguilar, who joined the practice last Monday and played a steady game in the Filipinos’ victory against the Athletes in Action squad in a tune-up match Thursday night.

The Powerade-RP squad will play for nine straight days. After their game against Jordan,
The Nationals battle host Chinese-Taipei on July 19.

Their complete schedule: July 20 versus Lebanon; July 21 against Japan; July 22 versus Korea; July 23 against Iran; July 24 versus South Africa; July 25 against Kazakhstan.

RP battles Jordan in Jones Cup opener

JORDAN will be the first team to test the mettle of the Powerade- Team Pilipinas when the William Jones Cup basketball tournament fires off on July 18 at the Physical Education gym in Taipei.

Coach Yeng Guiao and his team are now getting ready for the tough grind ahead.

Beginning Monday, the RP squad will have a thrice-a-week practice in preparation for the two international tournaments—the William Jones Cup in Taipei and the Fiba Asia Men’s Basketball Championship in Taijin, China.

The nationals will face a Jordan squad beefed up by American players—Sam Daghlas and Rasheim Wright and 7-footer Jamal Ma’aytah—on opening day at 3 p.m.

But the Jones Cup will not only serve as a preparation for the Filipinos in their much-awaited campaign in the Fiba Asia tournament, where they hope to bounce back from a ninth-place finish. It will also be a breeding ground for Pinoy players, particularly new recruit Japeth Aguilar.

The 6’9” Aguilar, son of former Northern Consolidated Corp. and Ginebra San Miguel player Peter Aguilar, has caught the fancy of everyone—from Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Sonny Barrios to Powerade team manager JB Baylon to the rest of the players.

“He has the potential, no question about that,” Guiao told Standard Today. “But he is still trying to get the feel of the Philippine brand of game. Medyo nangangapa pa. I believe this is his first game here since his Ateneo days.”

The multi-titled coach said Aguilar will need more exposure and play tougher games to become a force to reckon with not only in the international basketball scene but in the PBA, where he is expected to become the top overall rookie pick.

Masyado siyang malinis maglaro, wala pang kagulang-gulang,” said Guiao. “But I believe matututo rin ‘yan. We’re planning to give him more exposure here in the Jones Cup and hope to see some improvement before the Fiba Asia event.”

The Powerade-RP squad will play for nine straight days. After their game against Jordan, Guiao and his troop battle host Chinese Taipei on July 19.

The other scheduled games of the Powerade-RP squad are as follows: July 20, 3: p.m. vs Lebanon; July 21, 3 p.m. vs Japan; July 22, 5 p.m. vs Korea; July 23, 1 p.m. vs Iran; July 24, 1 p.m. vs South Africa; July 25, 3 p.m. vs Kazakhstan and July 26, 5 p.m. vs Taiwan-2nd.

i am lebanese and i admit that sam daghlas is jordanian 100%...his family is famous in jordan plus i heard him once having an interview speaking arabic like any other jordanian...
moreover the 7-footer is not that strong...

I think its a typo error and basically, in my opinion, Filipino news writers are too lazy to research about something they're about to write... if you read the other article... the writer mention Lebanon not Jordan in the 2007 Group of Death... thats lack of research and basically, laziness to be accurate... I remember, last year or more.. some high school kid scored 82 points and everyone in the Philippines went crazy.. then the media started publishing articles saying the kids scored the most in the Philippine history... but the idiots.. too lazy to research and did not realize that back in the 1920s... a Filipino scored 116 points... some writers even thought that the Asian Games is a qualifier of the Olympic Games...

YG is not really a believer in three point shot..he puts more emphasis on defense and running game..as you can see, his system is all about defense and when this defense is coming around, his players can easily score thru running..however, he also get players who once in a while shoot 3's..though not consistent as you believe, but these players can shoot at least 35 or 40 percent of their shot, and that's good enough for YG

Yes, Coach Yeng emphasizes more on defense but if you look at how Red Bull (during his tenure) plays are executed he had players that can shoot. Coach Kalbs loves to execute that secondary break with Pennisi using him as a trailer and was always setup to take the 3 while the man handling the ball diverts the defense by driving to the basket and later kicking it out to either Pennisi or Hrabak. Pick & Rolls or more of a Pick & Pop, Pennisi was always the screener coz everybody knows he can shoot. I'm just not that confident with the shooting of guys like Dillinger, Reyes, etc. although we don't have to rely on 3 pt shooting since this team is more athletic than the previous RP team but still with need a little bit of an assurance that the man open for a 3 can hit it with consistency.

Hrabak was a nobody until he played with Red Bull leading a season in 3 pt FG pct, Celino Cruz was dead shot during his Red Bull days, Mick was scary as hell (I know that coz I'm a Ginebra fan) and there was Fonacier, Junthy, Membrere, etc.

I'm sure if we defended well during the game we can win it. The team just needs to removed that habit of starting slow every game. Ika nga, "You can't win a game during first half but you could certainly lose one" or something like that.

Good Luck RP team.
