Another US player tries out for Smart-GilasBy
WAYLON GALVEZMay 31, 2010, 6:51pm

DOHA, Qatar — Smart-Gilas national team’s Serbian coach Rajko Toroman said Sunday that an American player who is currently in Russia will arrive in Manila this week to tryout for a slot in the team.

Marcus Douthit, a 6-foot-10 forward-center who played college ball at Providence, will be arriving on June 8.

His arrival was confirmed by his American agent to Toroman.

“We got some list from one agent. It’s good if she can give us Dwayne Jones, Earl Barron. But we’ll try with Douthit,” Toroman said.

Douthit was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers (56th overall) in the 2004 NBA Rookie Draft, the same draft class of Dwight Howard, Andre Iguodala, Jameer Nelson, and Jackson Vroman, the Lebanese-American who played for Mahram-Iran in the Champions Cup.

Douthit currently plays for the Krasnie Krilya Samara in Russia where he’s averaging only 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds. In the recent Euro League, his numbers improved to 11.5 points and 7.6 rebounds.

Smart-Gilas import in the Champions Cup, 6-foot-10 Serbian Milan Vucicevic, has impressed the coaching staff with his work ethic and attitude, but his size and level of play will not be enough to help the national team in the Asian Games this year and the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship, the qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics.

“Milan is great guy, he’s a good player and he helped us a lot. Still, we need a really good rebounder, who can push us and better run on the court,” Toroman said.

With this Development and Coach T's Comment... It's Bye2x Milan...

Well Coach T would want to leave his countryman in the deep blue ocean all alone. I'm sure they're gonna secure his services up until 2011. They personally said it they like his work ethic and is pretty much willing to be NATURALIZED. :D

still this news prove coach toroman does not give up to the belief that if he get that right big guy he can match up with the best in asia to get that difficult olympic slot:D

unluckily it is not right now that he only needs a rebounder out there but he needs a guy who is more complete. he may never be a scorer in his previous stint but if he has the physical tools coach knows that he can made him a scorer. Hnestly gilas team is centered with a guy who maybe cannot be a reality:(

i hope not

Its just really funny that Smart-Gilas, with the exception of Milan Vucicevic, that another ex-Laker is trying out for the NT. Sampson had a brief stint with LA and so did Giles. Hope this guy does not a big baggage like his predecessors.

Sad to hear that Milan might be replaced. He is a nice guy and plays hard.

If he's good enough and has the attitude and mentality of Milanit's worth a try. Though it would be a pity if we let go of Milan, seems like a nice gentle fella.

yes. A lot of Pinoys are already attached to him. I'm sure he already loves the country and the people. It's a shame if we let him go without any compensation for what he's done.

He's a very nice guy.

USA-Passing Lane edges Philippines, wins Jones Cup title - Aug 2, 2005

USA-Passing Lane, who has already clinched the 2005 Jones Cup title yesterday, beat Philippines 99-96 in the finale and came away with a perfect 9-0 record. But the final game was not easy as Philippines almost forced the game into overtime until team leader Asi Taulava missed the desperation three-point shot.
Passing Lane came out strong as expected and led by as many as 19 points. But Philippines was too experienced to let the game become a blowout. Taulava, who made two threes in the first half, attacked the rim repeatedly in the second half and led Philippines' furious comeback.
With Philippiines on their tails, Marcus Douthit (208-F/C-80, agency: Passing Lane, college: Providence) made a turnaround jumper with 1:23 left to make the score 94-91. Taulava and Mike Williams made a free-throw each before Anthony Helterbrand made a twisting layup to cut the deficit down to one point with 56.2 seconds to go.
Ben Walker and Jordan Salvador traded basket as Passing Lane still led 97-96 with 22 seconds left. But Passing Lane broke down a Philippines full-court press in the next play as Steffon Bradford jammed home the most crucial basket of the game.
Philippines didn't give up. Coach Reyes called timeout to set up the final play. Taulava caught the inbound pass and faked a high post screen before launching the desperation three-pointer that bounced out.

USA Passing Lane 99 T. Johnson 33p(9-12 3PT), M. Douthit 21p+6a, C. Okosa 17p+9rb, S. Bradford 12p+7a

CJ Giles keeps options open on RP team return

Giles had briefly played for the Smart-Gilas team and was instrumental in the RP team’s fifth place finish last year in the FIBA-Asia meet in Jakarta.

American CJ Giles, who became a thorn for the Philippines when he played for Al Riyad of Lebanon in the recent 21st FIBA-Asia Championship Cup in Doha, Qatar said he was keeping his options open when asked if he was willing to play for the Philippines again.

Giles had briefly played for the Smart-Gilas team and was instrumental in the RP team’s fifth place finish last year in the FIBA-Asia meet in Jakarta.

But he was cut from the RP roster by Gilas coach Rajko Toroman reportedly because of attitude issues.

“We’ll talk to my agent and see what happens,” Giles, 24, said when reporters caught up with him at the Doha airport the other day.

Giles helped his Lebanese team to a third place finish in the FIBA-Asia meet where the Philippines was seventh among 10 teams. Against the Philippines, Lebanon won, 74-63.

A former player of the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, Giles is remembered as the first import tapped for the all-amateur national team, which was formed July last year.

While he might consider returning to the national team if an offer is made, Giles said he’s also not shutting doors for opportunities to play in the NBA again.

“I got opportunities to play in the NBA Summer League. But I don’t know yet what will happen. I have to see when I get back to the United States.”

The Smart-Gilas is also weighing its options on Nigerian born player Olumide Oyedeji, who played for the Seattle Supersonics (now Oklahoma City Thunders) in the NBA and saw action for the Applied Sciences University (ASU) of Jordan in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup.

Toroman and his coaching staff have been scouring the international basketball scene looking for players with potential to become naturalized players for Smart-Gilas.

Several are currently trying out but none so far has captured the eye of Toroman.

If I'm right this game was full of trash talking. This was when Denok and Jondan were draft prospects right?

As much ass we hate CJ giles attitude, he is really a good rebounder and shot blocker and a physical and athletic presence that we need. I hope he will change and be back to rp team .

I still think CJ giles is the best fit for the Gilas system. His is perfect for the small ball, running game and he already proved himself before that he can actually compliment our elite guards on both defense and offense.

CJ also plays well with Japeth Aguilar, remember them teaming up against the Singapore slingers? I think Coach Toroman and Frankie Lim should re-evaluate their stance on Giles because if he is willing to be naturalized then he is really the one for us. Milan, for his great attitude, can then serve as our backup naturalized player.

Giles, Nigerian join list of RP prospects
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) Updated June 02, 2010 12:00 AM

DOHA, Qatar – Two more prospects for naturalization emerged over the weekend, including Smart Gilas former import CJ Giles.

Giles recently signified his intention to suit up again for Smart Gilas even as Olumide Oyedeji said he might be available for the RP team gearing up for the Guangzhou Asian Games this year and the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championships.

“I’m alright with that but we’ll see,” said the high-leaping 6-11 Giles, who was with the Nationals last year.

On the other hand, the 6-10 Oyedeji, who played for the Seattle Supersonics, now the Oklahoma Thunder, from 2000-2002, said he has given his number to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas officials just in case he might be available.

“We talked to him (Oyedeji) and he said he might be available for us,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala, who was with the team in Doha, Qatar where Smart Gilas finished seventh in the 21st FIBA-Asia Champions Cup.

Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim, however, said it will all be up to coach Rajko Toroman.

“In the end, it will boil down to who coach Rajko will choose,” he said.

Giles, who suited up as an import for Al Riyadi of Lebanon in the Doha joust, told Eala that Lebanon did not pursue its earlier plan to tap him since it has already fellow American Jackson Vroman in its fold.

For Oyedeji, who played for ASU of Jordan, RP may have difficulty in securing his release papers from Nigeria and approval from FIBA-World, which prevents players from playing for another country in any FIBA-sanctioned event.

Toroman earlier said Smart Gilas will try out American Marcus Douthit as the team continues its search for a naturalization candidate.

I hope the Smart Gilas Management would give CJ Giles a 2nd chance to play for our national team.

The National Team needs a defensive Center. CJ Giles is a solid defender, and a good shot blocker.
