Candidates for Naturalization (Smart Gilas Dev Team)

Giles has more skills than Oyedeji. While Oyedeji is stronger in terms of his upper body strength. Although, Giles is a better offensive player Oyedeji has an advantage in playing better post defense. I would give them equal marks on shot blocking capabilities though.

Either one would be good for the RP team. We really need an athletic player to compliment our not so athletic national team.

we forgave imelda and erap so why should one be surprised if we forgive giles ? hahaha i can only shake my head that some quarters are even entertaining giles after all his antics, for goodness sakes. Let's bang our head on a rock :D

I'd love to see Giles again haha. But milan Schooled him when they met.

at the bottom of the article, it said that El-Khatib showed interest in playing as an import in the PBA. ^_^

I'd love to see him there.

Giles, Nigerian join list of RP prospects

DOHA, Qatar – Two more prospects for naturalization emerged over the weekend, including Smart Gilas former import CJ Giles.

Giles recently signified his intention to suit up again for Smart Gilas even as Olumide Oyedeji said he might be available for the RP team gearing up for the Guangzhou Asian Games this year and the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championships.

“I’m alright with that but we’ll see,” said the high-leaping 6-11 Giles, who was with the Nationals last year.

On the other hand, the 6-10 Oyedeji, who played for the Seattle Supersonics, now the Oklahoma Thunder, from 2000-2002, said he has given his number to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas officials just in case he might be available.

“We talked to him (Oyedeji) and he said he might be available for us,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala, who was with the team in Doha, Qatar where Smart Gilas finished seventh in the 21st FIBA-Asia Champions Cup.

Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim, however, said it will all be up to coach Rajko Toroman.

“In the end, it will boil down to who coach Rajko will choose,” he said.

Giles, who suited up as an import for Al Riyadi of Lebanon in the Doha joust, told Eala that Lebanon did not pursue its earlier plan to tap him since it has already fellow American Jackson Vroman in its fold.

For Oyedeji, who played for ASU of Jordan, RP may have difficulty in securing his release papers from Nigeria and approval from FIBA-World, which prevents players from playing for another country in any FIBA-sanctioned event.

Toroman earlier said Smart Gilas will try out American Marcus Douthit as the team continues its search for a naturalization candidate.

it's going to be hard to secure the Nigerian's release. Why not try Giles out again if Douhit fails?

I hope the Smart Gilas Management would give CJ Giles a 2nd chance to play for our national team.

The National Team needs a defensive Center. CJ Giles is a solid defender, and a good shot blocker.

and.....

He quickly gets in foul trouble (major issue we faced with him). He's inconsistent (one game he plays great, the other he's nowhere to be seen)

As for attitude issues, I think he has improved in that aspect since we didn't face any problems from his side when he was with Riyadi unlike what previously happened with him while playing for Gilas.

Overall though, he's still a better candidate than the plausible available options out there. He's still young and has a long road ahead of him.

I still think if you guys could afford Lorren Woods he would be the best candidate for the short run (For FIBA 2011) since he's already in his 30's.

i was thinking the same for lorren woods.

regarding cj giles, at first riyadi wants to kick him out because of doping issue?

I actually read about the doping issue here in in the IBN forums. I'm not sure though whether this was actually true or just rumors.

Well we might even see CJ giles play as in import since we will have a pba season without height limit. By the way , did smart gilas about Alexander? I think he is available and he is 7'1 and has good hands

CJ giles back to rp team? Who knows, maybe its a blessing in disguise

Toroman hot on Douthit as Gilas import
By Joey Vilar (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Serbian Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman yesterday ruled out any possibility of trying out former import CJ Giles or ex-NBA player Olumide Oyedeji and instead reiterated his desire to test American Marcus Douthit as the team’s candidate for naturalization.

“No way,” said Toroman, referring to earlier reports that Giles and Oyedeji would be trying out with the team.

Although the return of Giles, the 6-11 former Los Angeles Lakers draftee who saw action with Team RP last year, looks tempting, Toroman said he is not the player they are looking for.

“Although he looks impressive, he’s not the player we need,” said Toroman referring to Giles, who played for Smart Gilas for a year before he was released.

“What we need is someone who is stronger inside, can defend, get us more rebounds and can run the floor,” he added.

Oyedeji, a 6-10 Nigerian who played for the Seattle Supersonics, now the Oklahoma Thunder, from 2000-2002, has the materials to make it to the team but Smart Gilas may encounter problems with his eligibility.

Oyedeji suited up for ASU of Jordan and under FIBA rules, players who saw action for one national team in any FIBA-sanctioned event is no longer allowed to play for another squad.

That makes Douthit the most logical pick as the team’s reinforcement as Smart Gilas primes itself up for the Asian Games this November and the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship, which serves as a qualifier for the 2012 London Olympics.

“We’re hoping he could be the one,” said Toroman.

The Smart Gilas squad is composed of the country’s collegiate players headed by skipper Chris Tiu, co-captain Mark Barroca and JV Casio, talented Filipino-Americans Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz and Chris Banchero and lone pro Kelly Williams.

if sbp can afford it, they should play with 2 naturalization prospect come july in the jones cup.

they could play alternately at the center position during games or could alternate game by game.

in this way, we could really see how can they perform with the gilas players against national teams.

a good suggestion would be douthit and milan will play in alternate games. lets say milan 1st then douthit then back to milan. that would be good..

Toroman closes door on Giles

Smart-Gilas Serbian coach Rajko Toroman has slammed the door on the possible return of American CJ Giles, saying he’s not the right man for the team.

“No way,” Toroman said when asked to comment on the possibility of getting back the former Los Angeles Lakers forward. “He’s very athletic but he’ll never give you the results that we want.”

Giles, who tried out for Smart-Gilas last year, said Tuesday that he’s keeping his options open regarding playing for the Philippines again.

Toroman said he’s not interested in getting back his services.

He said he was not at all impressed with the performance of the 6-foot-11 Giles in the 21st FIBA-Asia Champions Cup last week where he played for Al-Riyadi-Lebanon.

In his game against Smart-Gilas, Giles made just eight points although the Lebanese squad won, 74-63.

The 24-year-old Giles was also a non-factor in the semifinals when Al Riyadi lost to eventual champion Mahram-Iran (64-71), and even when Lebanon won over ASU of Jordan (82-78) to finish third overall.

“We saw him in the quarterfinals against Smart-Gilas, in the semis against Iran and then in the game versus Jordan. He makes stupid fouls. That’s what he is, he won’t change,” Toroman said.

Toroman said that what the Nationals need is to find somebody like Jamaal Sampson, another former import, a 7-footer who was impressive in several exhibition games, averaging almost 20 points and 20 rebounds

what an attitude Milan has, and we all gonna miss him... it just that, the Smart Gilas (and Toroman) will need to provide a better -if not a best finish come Asian Games and more on Fiba Asia 2011., thats why they still hoping to find a better, and a perfect candidate for naturalization.

let just hope for the best for our Smart Gilas team, this is ours lets embrace and support the team till the end.
