So what style does ABA Teams play? Aren't they too NBA-ish? Whatever happened to learning international brand of basketball? Is this just part of the marketing ?
Does Jericho de Guzman play basketball?
wow Kelly and JunMar are on the team + a healthy Jamal! Dream team ata to.
Anyway, if they use Powerade paraphernalia, I think a lot of Pinoys in Cali would recognize the players. Imagine the surprise of the Yapsters when they see Captain Tiu.
Let's think of this as an acid test against an ENHCAncED PBA squad.
Which is stronger, PBA teams or ABA teams?
Good luck Gilas and I hope this'll be televised.
yes ABA teams play american style pro basketball but since GILAS is going to undergo training at Las Vegas, an offer to play ABA teams while they are there is hard to pass up. Remember what we want is for our boys is to be exposed with all kinds of opposition and all kind styles of play. This would be even better than last year when they faced a pick-up team led by Antoine Walker, the 4 ABA teams would be more organized team wise while the All-star team would be a test for Gilas in facing a team filled-up with athletically gifted players.
my comment on the poster...what in the world are they talking about in the line up?darn, how did they get such info?..i think sbp should somehow correct this..i mean who did this?can somebody call them and make clarifications?
second, i'm kinda searching for threads about SMART GILAS on serbia...i can't find one...if there is any, pls be kind to paste the link here...thank you...
actually there is a problem, I am not really sure if the SBP really confirmed participation. I know there were discussions before but I was surprised when the news about said games came out of the net and that includes the promotional materials which have a lot of erroneous details. Thats why I posted it here.
Am sure the U18 has not confirmed playing as they are actually having problems with their line-up, with that they could not yet have their passports and visas processed yet. From what I know, this team is to train in Indiana on May.
Those who are knowledgeable to US NCAA Rules, do need to know if playing against a Professional ABA Team would be a violation in eligibility rules. I need to protect the players who are governed by the US NCAA which is strict about "amateurism".
To invite Christian Standhardinger and the other mystery player during academic year may cause losing their eligibility to play. Take note this month April still falls within their academic year of US NCAA schools and to invite them even for a try-out will cause troubles![]()

JOSE EMMANUEL EALA
Executive Director
SBP
Dear Mr. Eala,
Because Mr. Mallonee is out of the office until next Wednesday (April 8, 2009), he asked me to respond to your inquiry..
NCAA rules permit student-athletes who attend member institutions to participate in national team tryouts and to receive expenses for competition from an outside team or nonprofessional sponsor of the competition. NCAA Division I Bylaw 14.7.3 sets forth exceptions to the general rule that restricts the participation of student-athletes in competition other than for their intercollegiate teams. One such exception [Bylaw 14.7.3.1-(d)] allows student-athletes to participate in official tryouts and competition involving national teams and junior national teams sponsored by the appropriate national governing bodies or Olympic committee (or the equivalent organization).
NCAA Division I Bylaw 12.1.2.1.4.5 allows student-athletes to receive actual and necessary expenses (e.g., travel, lodging, meals) to participate in competition from the nonprofessional sponsor of the competition. Therefore, if tryouts you have described below will included competition and the Philippine Basketball Federation is the sponsor of the competition, it would be permissible for the federation to provide actual and necessary expenses to student-athletes at NCAA member institutions to participate in the tryouts.
Please note that I’ve provided specific legislative citations for NCAA Division I rules. NCAA Divisions II and III have similar rules, but the citations may not be exactly the same. If any NCAA member institution has questions regarding this information, they should be directed to call our office at 317-917-6003.
I hope this information is helpful. If you need more information, please let me know.
Thanks,
Leeland Zeller

final game will be against an All-Star team of top West Coast ABA Players.
I have a question, would there be a violation of US NCAA Eligibility Rules if a player currently playing for US College team or a High School player set to play for a US College Team is to play in the ABA.
