Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. IV

Posted this in the U18 thread, but fits here more , for all the talk that the 2014 Gilas WC team had better offense well here are the stats

we really didn't have any problems scoring in the OQT we scored 84 pts vs France and avg 40 % from three , vs NZ we scored 80 pts , 40 % from three. On both games we made 11 threes. if you translate that to a 48 minute game that equates to avg 100 pts a game and this is vs a world class athletic team on both occassions, Not an Asia or even Chinese team that is slow. but good defensive teams. So for all the flaws you mentioned in offense (e.g No DDO etc) , the stats don't really support it .

here are WC offensive stats
vs Croatian team in 40 min we scored just 70 pts
vs Greek squad we scored (70 pts)
vs Senegal we scored 64 pts in regulation
vs Puerto Rico 73 pts
vs Argentina 81 pts

So on avg in regulation play Gilas 2 in the WC avg 71 pts vs Gilas 4 OQT which avg 82 pts , so where is the better offense there?

Where the team really got hurt in the OQT is in defenses. mis assignments and poor transition particularly on Blatche ( the center and supposedly the anchor on defense , especially for an undersize team) , that's really the story. Talked to one NZ coach and he could not believe at how poorly Blatche came down on defense

if only Ndiaye is not a national player of senegal...

Does mean he isnt good, all good non american players would play in their nt no matter what..

Unless there is some euro baller or a canadian one who amnge to not play in the junior nt..

thus, my wishful thought as expressed by "if only"

is there any african imports in uaap or ncaa that is good enough to play for us as a naturalized player playing power forward (with junmar and greg at center)or tall enough to be our undersized center (fotu is only 6'8 but very good at d 5)?

lots of hype for mbala the past 3yrs. He has been producing monster numbers on tuneups, lets see if he's the real deal. But he is "only" 6'7

I agree with the coach Iran. SBP should form a 24-man pool with the mix of Amateur and Professional players. Young guns like Paras, Cariño, Holmqvist brothers, even Mendoza should be included in the pool. I don't agree of sending "The Best players", it should be "The Best players who are fit to play in the International level". Being a PBA MVP doesn't guarantee you can be a good player internationally. Guys like Yap, Miller, Santos, Helterbrand were perfect examples. We need players who can play together as a unit. We don't need great one on one players.

So now Iran is preparing their cadet / young players

Interesting observation from the German , Iran coach
"“For the Philippines, they’re good as well, but they need to avoid doing individual plays, just like what they’re seeing in the NBA and I’m not surprised with the influence the Americans had on them. They need to play better as a team,” he said

I've been saying this since 2014. We never learn.

There's no problem us using individual plays. It has saved us a lot of times. IMO, it is one of our advantage. We just need to have ample time in our training and learn the coach's system. Especially on our defensive communication. It's hard to strive for success when you only have a month of training.

Individual play is pretty much a necessity. 1 month practice and 2wks camp won't cut it. Real team play will only happen if PBA gets a real offseason or we have a full time NT which also isn't ideal as they need to compete. Or if MVP make his PBA teams like a NT pool. Trade away the ineligibles and over the hill players, draft and sign players with NT potential.

PBA is also totally different from fiba basketball so players need time to adjust. Euro teams doesn't have that problem since euro and fiba is pretty much the same. PBA needs to follow fiba rules if we want to get used to it. It also needs to transition to an open league. like allowing asian imports without height limit., collegiate imports that has played 3yrs of college bball etc. Heck these africans speak tagalog and know the culture better than most filams that has been here for 10+ years.

but then again, none of these wishes will happen esp with the current pba comish

great suggestion. Since he has 3 teams in the PBA he can dump his ineligibles to his 2 other teams in exchange for potential NT players. make a farm team out the weak teams to magnet in future great picks and viola, we have ourselves a super team the can be called to be a NT anytime lol. The only problem i see here is the approval by the bias PBA commissioner on such trades.

Mighty Sports prove it otherwise, they make Bo Perasol llok liek a dream team coach..

And watch the u18 final, a lot of iso plays done by both Japan and Iran, although Iran make their players for a drop pass though..

Ang nipis ng tawag kay Carino in the last two games, although might be a reason why he was releagted to team b n college he is not yet strong enough does he make unnecessary fouls, but playing him a center exclusively might be a mistake in college bball setting in our country..

SBC still has foreign athlete so that should help him focus more as PF rather than C.

Outside Tankoua, they dont ahve marquee guys above 6'5 except for the incoming red cubs.. But Jamike isnt the guy who like to handle your big, Nash and Eric are different case though..

He should have join Arvin and Hubert insteaf. Look at the improvements of Jose, Escoto, Orizu, Holmqvist, Carl Cruz and most of all Belo.

Dunno dun siya nilagay sa Beda, and Arvin was sent to Morayta instead of Mendiola..

I think it was the kid's decision to join Beda, same with Arvin. San Beda has produced some quality bigs as well like the Pascuals. FEU is not a good destination for me IMHO, They have good big men and also imports doing residency unlike Beda which only has Tankoua and Noah is not even considered as a big man because of his size, their Team B has 2 africans but too raw.

But FEU doesnt pretend to be an academic institution who happens to have a sports program..

They are your examples? oh no.. heheh

We are talking about quality big men here. why would you put someone in FEU if they still have Holmqvist, Nbendum (nvm the spelling) Orizu to utilize? instead of Beda who only has Tankoua, maybe Adamos is another raw prospect.

He will get minutes in fEu , you can only use 1 foreigner , while Holmqvist isn't the long defensive athletic type. it also insures he plays as a 4 rather than a center. not only in games but in practice. Imagine every practice he plays against and with a foreign center. then he has to match -up with a 6' 8 stretch 4. that's great exposure.
