nope. it's one of MVP or smart's project.. i think G stands for gearing, I for innovative, L for learning and s stands for studies. I don't know with a. correct me if i'm wrong

Gearing-up Internet LiterAcy in Schools. It was a joint project of both Globe and the PLDT Group. Now, the name is almost exclusively associated with Smart.

We really play bad in oqt, bax selection of players didnt help either.

You know how we able to get it close against iran in 2013 because japhet is still a threat despite not producing..

Thanks. This should be included in the Gilas Trivia section or the million peso question in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. :)

yun ba talaga... ang history ng gilas o siningit lang..

Yeah this is a fact but it doesnt mean 100% that it is the real root of the name Gilas..

The Eagle and the pinoy Gilas...

You have a point. I googled it (www.itu.int/net/wsis/stocktaking/docs/activities/1130464916/GILAS-FAQ.doc), GILAS is a brain child of Ayala (Globe) and supported by various telecommunication and IT companies. So it is not really an initiative of Smart. For whatever reason, I'll go back to my original presumption that the presence of C.J. GILES really has an influence in naming the team as GILAS.

Quite excited for the FIBA Asia Challenge actually. Hopefully we could send a developmental team from the PBA. Something like this. Just my suggestion.
PG:RR Garcia/RJ Jazul/Kiefer Ravena
SG:Carlo Lastimosa/Jericho Cruz
SF:Troy Rosario/Kevin Ferrer
PF:Mo Tautuaa/Aldrech Ramos/Ian Sangalang
C:Raymond Almazan/JP Erram
Maybe we could even add in former Glas members that are already left behind. Dylan Ababou,Chris Tiu,Mark Barroca,Chris Lutz,Mac Baracael,Ballesteros? lol, JVee Casio,Kevin Alas,Garvo Lanete,Ronald Pascual,Jake Pascual

The GILAS initiative was started in 2005, and PLDT-Smart was one of the first to join in, along with companies such as HP, SPI, IBM, etc. The project was turned over to the DepEd in 2011.

The team has been known as Smart-Gilas since February 2009 at the earliest. (See: http://www.interbasket.net/forums/s...ger-King-VS-Smart-Gilas-RP-Team-(Feb-04-2008) )

CJ Giles only joined the team in May 2009. (http://www.rappler.com/sports/by-sp...35-searching-naturalized-big-smart-gilas-boys )

But whatever floats your boat, I guess. :D

Marcio Lassiter on not playing for Gilas: 'It hurts to sit at home and watch'
From: Gerry Ramos July 17, 2016, 07:58 pm

MARCIO Lassiter said he was disappointed to miss the opportunity to play for Gilas Pilipinas and help in the country’s bid to qualify for the Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

The San Miguel gunner stressed how he really wanted to play for the national team in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Manila last week, only to be hindered by the broncopneumonia he contracted while Gilas was in the middle of its two-month training.

Lassiter didn’t recover from the infection until the team was already in Europe for the final phase of its preparation for the qualifier.

“It hurts to sit there at home and watch. But maybe it was God’s will. I’m not sure,” said Lassiter, speaking on the issue for the first time following his failure to don the national colors in the Manila qualifier.

“It hurts a lot not to be there.”

In as much as he really wanted to play for the national team, the 29-year-old Fil-Am out of Cal State Fullerton said it was really not meant to be.

Even until now, or about a month since his recovery, Lassiter said he’s not yet fully back 100 percent in the pink of health.

“I don’t think so. It will take time, but I’m working on it. I’m still trying to do what I have to do,” he said after finishing with 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting, six rebounds, and six assists but with five turnovers in San Miguel’s 124-113 win over Phoenix in its debut game in the PBA Governors Cup.

But he said the 12 players – and the two reserves in Calvin Abueva and LA Tenorio – were all deserving to be in the Gilas roster

“As much as I want to be out there, I knew the guys out there will definitely perform. I knew it, more and more practice, I knew they’re out to perform,” said the San Miguel wingman.

Despite Gilas’ failure to make the semifinals of the qualifiers after losing both of its games in the preliminary against France and New Zealand, respectively, Lassiter said the team has nothing to be ashamed of.

“I’m so proud for all of them. They played with tremendous heart, they gave their all. There’s nothing you can say more on what they did,” he said of the national team.

“Even the coaching staff. I know they’ve been working extremely hard. It’s just sad that they came up short. But I honestly know the importance of them to keep on, and be better and better.”

I'm kinda worried that with the ways things going in the youth level, the under 16 and under 18 where we are not successful and we are beaten even by the likes of Chinese Taipei and Japan, in the future at senior level, we will be over taken by our Asian counterpart.

It's alarming that the youth level of other Asian countries are getting better than our youth team. I don't know if its something to do with growth spurt, or lack of training.

U18 tournaments i think have started during keifer ravena's time. which is like ten years ago? not sure though.

Ping though played for the RP Youth Team.

Can you post a link for U18 with ping/rdo? Cant see sorry the closest one i can find is the Nokia RPU16 with Sangalang

I think you're referring to U16.

keifers time? yeah he also played for u16.

fiba u18's inception is new actually. before i think they call it RP Youth Team and this is for the ABC Juniors Championship. RDO played also in that team RP Youth, then Ping next. when the U16 was started they then rebranded it to U18. as far as i know. not sure though. hope someone can shed a light more on this.

With Keifer trying his luck in the NBA D- league, I was just wondering if there will come a time when half of the National team play in foreign leagues and not the domestic league ( the PBA) , truth be told one of the reasons for the success of the Tall Blacks and their experience in world level play is half of the team plays outside the New Zealand league but in foreign leagues (US NCAA, Euro league , NBA (for Adams)
