We only need a draw with Myanmar to cement our place in the semis... of course, a win wouldn't hurt and I believe we got a better chance to qualify to the finals if we play Thailand in the semis than against Indonesia...

Of course, regardless of the result in this tournament.. based on the team's last two games.. expect a huge leap for PHL in the FIFA World Ranking...

Anyway, that was the biggest upset in ASEAN football and hopefully, more to come:):D

A very good day for Philippine Football indeed. Hats off to everyone in the team and of course to all passionate Pinoy futbol fans in the Phils. and around the world. Let's keep the momentum going.

Philippines-Azkals stuns defending champion Vietnam (2010 AFF Suzuki Cup) 12/05/2010

The Philippines stunned defending champion Vietnam, 2-0, in their Group B match on Sunday in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband struck for the Philippines as the underdog squad earned an all-important three points and endangered the hosts’ title-defense bid in the Southeast Asian region’s equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.

The 20-year-old Filipino-British Greatwich scored in the 38th minute, his shot silencing 40,000 Vietnamese fans that watched the match at the My Dinh National Stadium.

Disciplined defense by the Filipinos thwarted the hosts' offensive thrusts, and the Philippines took a 1-0 halftime lead

Stung, the Vietnamese mounted furious attacks early in the second half, leading to several scoring chances, but PHL goalie Neil Etheridge proved stalwart in snuffing all attempts by the increasingly desperate hosts.

After a miscue by the Vietnamese goalie, Alex Araneta had a sorry miss at an undefended goal in one of PHL's few but effective counter-attacks,

It was Younghusband who added an insurance goal in the 79th minute to finally silence boisterous home crowd that had continuously cheered their squad on to score an equalizer.

Younghusband shook off his defender and faked the Vietnamese goalie before calmly flicking the ball to the back of the net.

The win by the 151st-ranked Philippines against Vietnam, 13 notches higher in the FIFA world rankings, was the biggest upset in the tournament, and perhaps even in the history Southeast Asian football.

The AFF Suzuki Cup is a biennial football competition organized by the ASEAN Football Federation and contested by the national teams of Southeast Asia.

HANOI (5 Dec 2010) - Philippines created the biggest upset thus far in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 when they beat defending champions Vietnam 2-0 in the second game of the second match day of Group B here at the My Dinh National Stadium.

The scorers for the Philippines were Chris Greatwich in the 38th minute and Philip Younghusband in the 78th minute which allowed the team to take control of Group B – ahead of former champions Singapore and Vietnam.

With just one game left against Myanmar to play for at the Hien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh two days, the Philippines have just put themselves as the frontrunner to win the group this year ahead of their more illustrious counterparts.

“I’m still pinching myself; I still cannot believe that we have beaten the defending champions. I kept thinking that this is all just a dream and that I will wake up at the hotel with the match against Vietnam still to play for,” said a grinning Simon McMenemy, the chief coach of the Philippines.

“We showed that we could defend well although I was a little worried about our ability in catching them on the break. I told the lads before the match that we will have our work cut out but the boys were fabulous – we had three chances and we scored twice.”

With Singapore needing a last gasp goal before they were able to beat Myanmar in an earlier game, Vietnam were not leaving anything to chance as they pounded the Philippines backline right from the start.

The attacks were uncompromising against a Philippines defence bent on keeping everything at bay – much to the chagrin of Vietnam national coach Henrique Calisto as well as to the almost sell-out crowd who were expecting the home team to ride out to another big win.

Pham Thanh Luong, Nguyen Minh Phuong and Nguyen Anh Duc all had their chances but with Philippines custodian Neil Etheridge playing his best game thus far in the tournament, it was always tough to break the deadlock.

As Vietnam became increasingly under pressure, a quick counter attack in the 38th minute saw Philippines taking the lead instead.

Off a cross from Ian Araneta, it needed just a glancing header from Chris Greatwich to beat Vietnam’s Duong Hong Son for Philippines and the game's first goal.

Calisto brought in the enterprising Nguyen Trong Hoang at the hour mark and it almost paid the early dividend but for the continued heroics of Etheridge who once again thwarted the point blank shot from Anh Duc.

Trong Hoang were all over the pitch as he attempted to get closer and closer to adding to the two goals he scored in the match against Myanmar but for all his guile, the Philippines backline were just not giving any away.

And once again, it was to be the Philippines who found the back of the net when Philip Younghusband made good on the chance which came his way in the 78th minute of play.

“My players played well and I can’t complain because they played hard and they followed my instruction,” added Calisto.

“It was tough playing against a team which put a double-decker bus in front of you and then hope to catch you on the counter attacks – that is not football.”

Calisto being a sore loser, hahahahahaha thats how Azkals roll for you Calisto

You don't need height as a defender... I played football in high school as a defender against taller guys and I don't have any problems.. the only players that need a height are the goalkeepers...

I disagree with u donmar. you need height to defend against set pieces. otherwise ronaldo, nani, lampard et al will just lob the ball over you.

to my surprise, this is our 2nd victory in the history AFF championships

Real football fans in pinas will really love this I cannot imagine what their feeling:eek::D

you really have no idea how the Barotacnons are feeling ^_^

Good to see the sikad drivers shouting like hell when Younghusband and Greatwich scored.

2-0 over Vietnam. wow.

They're planning to put up a big screen in the next game. ^_^

Most of the people here were shouting G*go! at Araneta. Actually, Barsales is the father of my 2nd cousin and Margarse was once coached by my dad in High School.

No joke guys.

our Askals are like USA in WC 2002 or Greece in Euro 2004... they just put everyone behind the ball to defend and just catch teams on counter-attacks, set-pieces, and lazy defending. i agree with the Vietnam coach but you can't blame him for being such a sore ass loser. they were beaten 2-0 by a team with no ball handling, no passing, and no consistent build-up plays. :D it's not Joga Bonito, but it sure as hell works for us.

They had their chances but wasn't able to execute.. What did he expect? That we would go toe-to-toe with them?

A loss is a loss Calisto..:p

Like I said before its an advantage but its not a requirement..

Great win by the Azkals.

Brings back memories of that RP's 1-0 win over Malaysia in the 1991 SEA Games. Fegidero's strike then broke lots of Malaysian hearts. Malaysia was dumbfounded then and got all the media flak back in KL.

Now, we have this win over Vietnam. Great result. I am just tired of hearing these foreign commentators referring to PHL as MINNOWS. It's really irritating considering our great football past. But we cannot blame them due to the lack of past international results. Now, PHL Azkals are minnows no more.

Calisto is right to the extent that we have lousy counterattacks and no clear offensive plays. We need to strengthen that aspect. But Calisto is definitely sour-graping. He had to in order to deflect any attacks on him. But really pathetic.

Had Bundesliga's Stephan Shrock played then we have a definite striker better than the Younghusbands. Also, hopefully PHL gets Alaba, a Fil-Nigerian youngster, who is very entertaining to watch and looks to be a classy striker in the mold of a Pele.

IF he wasn't injured he could've have played.. at least his late replacement (Greatwich) gave us two goals..

Maybe, if he recover, he will make his national team debut in the AFC Challenge Cup next year (March 2011).. hopefully...

Look at the 6:00 mark of the video after that focus your sight on the bottom right of the screen.. Calisto brushing of a traditional handshake from Coach McMenemy.. McMenemy still insists on sending his 'thanks for the good game' thing but Calisto shoves it off..

Sore loser indeed..

Historic victory leaves McMenemy bewildered 06-Dec-2010

Hanoi: Philippines coach Simon McMenemy was in a state of disbelief after seeing his team hand defending champions Vietnam a stunning 2-0 defeat in Group B of the AFF Suzuki Cup on Sunday evening at the My Dinh Stadium.

Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband scored the goals as the Philippines claimed their greatest win in recent history and remarkably moved to the top of the group standings ahead of Singapore on goal difference.

"I'm pinching myself, I'm not sure we have done what we have done," said McMenemy. "I keep thinking I'll wake up in bed in the Sheraton hotel and we'll still have the game to play.

"We knew we could defend, we knew we were disciplined enough but we didn't know if we could go up the other end and score goals. We knew that would be our issue so we worked hard in training on simple things like converting breakaways when we are on the run."

McMenemy hailed his team's performance but admitted to being bewildered by the result.

"I came in here the other day and said I was proud of my boys, but I don't know how we've done that," he said.

"That was an incredible feat considering they are the Philippines and where they have come from. To go and turnover a powerhouse like Vietnam is incredible.

"We rode our luck throughout the game but I said to the guys at halftime: 'You have to keep putting yourself in a position for good things to happen to you and you have to keep working hard'.

"If you keep working hard the luckier you get. We had three chances and scored twice. This won't sink in for quite a while."

Vietnam coach Henrique Calisto was angered by the nature of the Philippines' win and was heavily critical of the style of play used by the Filipinos.

"Football is not this, football is not putting eight players in front of the area with no offensive system," said the Portuguese coach. "They were fighting and I respect the players but if you think this is football then you are wrong.

"My way is different. You can play and lose but you can lose with honour. They put the bus in front of the goal and shoot, shoot, shoot and they pray. They didn't have an offensive system.

"I told my players that the Philippines defend very well but they don't care about counterattacking, they only pay attention in defence. Until you score one goal, our job is very difficult and I told the players that.

"If you look at possession of the ball, if you look at shots, if you look at crosses maybe there was 70 or 80 percent for Vietnam and 20 or 30 percent for Philippines.

"If they think they can win the championship based on that then poor football. If the Philippines think they can win playing that way then my dear, poor, poor football in this region."

he's been here for ten years, i doubt what did he develop football in South East Asia.

this win is like singapore men's basketball NT beating a complete RP NT by 20 points inside a full-packed araneta coliseum.

it's THAT BIG! ;)

is this the same magnitude as the wins of our Volcanoes? i have no idea.
