Hanoi: Philippines coach Simon McMenemy was in a state of disbelief after seeing his team hand defending champions Vietnam a stunning 2-0 defeat in Group B of the AFF Suzuki Cup on Sunday evening at the My Dinh Stadium.

Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband scored the goals as the Philippines claimed their greatest win in recent history and remarkably moved to the top of the group standings ahead of Singapore on goal difference.

"I'm pinching myself, I'm not sure we have done what we have done," said McMenemy. "I keep thinking I'll wake up in bed in the Sheraton hotel and we'll still have the game to play.

"We knew we could defend, we knew we were disciplined enough but we didn't know if we could go up the other end and score goals. We knew that would be our issue so we worked hard in training on simple things like converting breakaways when we are on the run."

McMenemy hailed his team's performance but admitted to being bewildered by the result.

"I came in here the other day and said I was proud of my boys, but I don't know how we've done that," he said.

"That was an incredible feat considering they are the Philippines and where they have come from. To go and turnover a powerhouse like Vietnam is incredible.

"We rode our luck throughout the game but I said to the guys at halftime: 'You have to keep putting yourself in a position for good things to happen to you and you have to keep working hard'.

"If you keep working hard the luckier you get. We had three chances and scored twice. This won't sink in for quite a while."

Vietnam coach Henrique Calisto was angered by the nature of the Philippines' win and was heavily critical of the style of play used by the Filipinos.

"Football is not this, football is not putting eight players in front of the area with no offensive system," said the Portuguese coach. "They were fighting and I respect the players but if you think this is football then you are wrong.

"My way is different. You can play and lose but you can lose with honour. They put the bus in front of the goal and shoot, shoot, shoot and they pray. They didn't have an offensive system.

"I told my players that the Philippines defend very well but they don't care about counterattacking, they only pay attention in defence. Until you score one goal, our job is very difficult and I told the players that.

"If you look at possession of the ball, if you look at shots, if you look at crosses maybe there was 70 or 80 percent for Vietnam and 20 or 30 percent for Philippines.

"If they think they can win the championship based on that then poor football. If the Philippines think they can win playing that way then my dear, poor, poor football in this region."

hahahaha not his kind of football that is:D:D:D... a win is a win.. he knows regardless of the result of this tournament that a loss to the Philippines means his dismissal in Vietnam:D:D:D

“My players played well and I can’t complain because they played hard and they followed my instruction,” added Calisto.

“It was tough playing against a team which put a double-decker bus in front of you and then hope to catch you on the counter attacks – that is not football.”

Stop whining around Calisto! Lol. :D:p

watching that game probably gave a lot of Filipino futbol fans a lot of heart burns with all the shots on goal Vietnam had and a few moments of defensive brilliance by our defenders and Etheridge between the posts.

sure it was a clean sheet, but our team didn't concede because they were good defenders (otherwise Vietnam wouldn't have that many chances)... they kept it clean because of the sheer volume of players in the attacking area.

top pro clubs just need 2 centerbacks to defend the area and have their fullbacks pressure upfront for occasional counter attacks, we had 4 to 8 players in the box with no intention of gaining possession... they were just there to clear the ball and hope it lands to Phil Younghusband or Araneta and catch the Vietnam defense sleeping.

the 1st goal by Greatwich was just a stunner and it seems Vietnam was surprised we had a player capable of heading a ball. there was so much space for the pass and the header. the 2nd goal was one of the few times Vietnam allowed one of our players to even dribble the ball in their box and they paid for it.

1st time in a long while i watch a 90 min football game and i witness PHL defeated the defending champs on its own turf with its solid defense and with only 20-30% of attacking and those percentage we score 2 goals that upsets vietnam.

now i feel what the football fanatics do when watching their country play football. i feel that last night.. :D i celebrate by myself and every time vietnam almost score i witness "hold your breath moments" that went out and wide and the goalie defend his goal very well.. :p

for those 2 hours watching the game, the tag "Laughing stock of asian Football" was running thru my head. hoping this tournament will change everything.. ;)

This is what I was talking about..:D:D:D

SORE LOSER!

they have lots of chances, they had the possession for 70% of the game and has the most corners in the game but unable to score due to great defense by the azkals..

sounds awkward but PHL Football frenzy!! good to hear that.. :D ;)

i watched it for 94 minutes too!!! damn! i think i jumped when the azkals scored the second goal! the first one i just did not believe it went in... plus the commentators keep on saying that Vietnam is the reigning champs!

i always wanted to try football... i just don't know where... :o

if the azkals continues with their great performance (football or not football according to the viet coach :D) there will be a frenzy in Pilipinas indeed!

i celebrate also by myself at home :D :p too bad i didnt wear the RP team basketball jersey 2007 to support further the azkals lolz :p

i read in ph.yahoo.com site i think patricia hizon said (not exact words) "the win by PHL over Vietnam is like cambodia or laos beating PHL in double digits in terms of basketball."

hahaha nice!

she really used cambodia and laos? and not vietnam itself? its the same thing anyway.

i think Azkals Football IQ is at level in seag rivals at this point.

Azkals roster's composed of fil-foreign players mostly from europe where football is an everyday living... so with that i guess vietnam really underestimated the Azkals in that game considering they are the former champs.

Plus the pressure mounted when RP scored that first goal... and talk about the crowd!!! damn!

The lucky charm i think is the Azkals coach in a suit!!! :o:D

its quite odd... :D

its nice to beat a team in its home court. sweet moment when the crowd went silent..

That Callisto guy is full of himself. You try to win ANY game with a Tactic only you know will work. AZKALS knew that honest defense is their tool to achieve their objective in the game. To not allow a goal. To frustrate Vietnam. it worked. And that hardwork paid.

a class act indeed!! ;)

I guess he couldn't accept that he was outdone, tactically.

While our passing and possession needs to improve, the player's will to win was there.

Again, Congratulations to the Azkals. I hope our Football team gets enough support from the government and the private sector.

Could Gilas help the Azkals get enough support and attention? :)

The Filipinos can do it!!! Sorry for Vietnam and their coach. They thought it was just a walk in the park when up against the Azkals. They were dead wrong. I wonder what kind of daily news in Vietnam today. :):):)

Coach Simon: WHAT DO YOU WANT US TO DO, HAND OVER A WIN TO YOU?
Calisto: Hijo, Na TATAE na ako

Hand Vietnam a win? Not in my AZKALS' watch!!! :p

However, the trust is to trade up to the climax that is a defeat to the Philippines, the team has not been touched once in the history of Vietnam Tel confrontation. Witness the Philippines scored cleared last half an impasse, fans still cheered passionately, because they believe it is just unfortunate accident at the stage of defense.

But the more encouraging, the field team again bogged down in stalemate, while the goal is to turn its back on the home team.

To express their frustration, many viewers record for early, while still more than 10 minutes the game ended. Number not sit back patiently constant criticism subjective style rock, mixed with the lack of safety and handling of the defense is difficult to understand ... all react with disappointment the attitude the red tape.

On the way leaving the auditorium, many viewers still pour out warm memories are feeling hungry after accepting money to buy tickets, then go all the way from the airport. They have the same feeling of confidence for the team seems not to be repaid in full, and fully deserved.

Many reasons are given conjecture, but they still can not explain why the team emerged champions in Southeast Asia, with more class players to easily pass through the Philippines to coordinate offensive line simple, then Other places such goals are not easy people.

There may be a twist exists to explain the failure of Tel Vietnam, but Calisto is considered as normal in the spokes. Not specify the major causes leading to failure before shocking the Philippines, nor claimed responsibility for the failure. Calisto also surprised that many people flocked to the cause of failure of the Philippines defensive style rock.

Explanation he "Christ" given that many fans think that is the variable, instead of a realistic look at the weaknesses that exist. Team Philippines is being evaluated "under the door," of course they have the right to choose their own defensive strategy - the most appropriate response.

Calisto Philippines criticized the team arranged as two-storey bus in front of goal. But just a few quick counter-attack line, the Philippines have easily scored two goals to beat the first phone in Vietnam, that's the difference that he compares to look Calisto.

Self-determination semi-finals ticket is in hand at the Battle of Tel Vietnam "final" encounter Singapore (8 / 12). With what was exposed, even when teachers go on to win tickets Calisto also regained full confidence of the fans.
