News for the 2006/2007 season

AEK has money issues as well, their president Filippou refused to spend money for the team, and atm it looks like the clubs budget will be pretty low. The team doesn’t even have a homecourt yet (earlier reports about an agreement with the OAKA were denied) and will start the practise with the junior team most likely. It’s not sure yet that Alexandris really will be the teams coach if this policy continues.

Update on AEKs condition:

Giannis Filippou just stepped down as AEKs president, AEK is for sale for 1 (!!!) Euro now. The club now really needs to find an investor, or else...

FINALLY!it's time formelisanidis to show us that he loves aek!or anyone else!it's great if filipou is finally out of the picture!but we have to wait.in 2005 he said that again but didn't left!

AEK is very likely to withdraw its participation from the ULEB cup after the resignation of its owner (Filipou). The club's board is trying to prevent this from happening but the financial situation of the team, in combination with the lack of an arena, and the empty roster seems that it will lead them to the inevitable.

I would agree with that decision as no-one wants a ghost team making fun of its history across Europe. If that happens it is not known what would happen to the empty ULEB cup spot. It is unlikely that another greek club would like to fill it.

A real shame for a club that no-one, even its own fans, don't care about. Because it all boils down to the lack of interest from the AEK fans. It's not becaue of bad financial programming, not because of bad board decisions, it's purely because of the indifference of the fans. I hope they can enjoy their 35.000 season tickets to watch Tziortziopoulos and Cirilo beating Atromitos, Kalamaria and 9-men Scottish clubs...

AEK is in a really serious condition now. Sport24.gr claims that the depts of the club reach 2 Million Euros and that this is one of the reasons why nobody wants to take over. AEK needs to find an investor now or the days of the club are counted.
They don't have many options now though, Dimitris Melissanidis might be one, maybe even Demis Nikolaidis will jump in to prevent the end of AEK, however these are people from the football department and I don't know if they really care that much about basketball.

As for AEK withdrawing from the ULEB Cup: If this happens it's a shame and AEKs board committed a crime against greek basketball. I wondered why they took the spot in the first place back when they did, a spot they didn't even qualify for. At this point it is very unlikely that another greek team can fill the gap, Panionios (I'm sure they would've played ULEB Cup if they had the chance) will play in the FIBA Cup, same applies to Maroussi (who refused playing in the ULEB Cup like every year), while Panellinios didn't want to play in a european competition at all (something I didn't understand). In the end the only options would be the two teams from Larissa - both teams don't have a roster for the ULEB Cup though.
One can only hope that AEK will find an investor and that the withdrawal won't happen...

If he had stepped down last year AEK would have resolved.

Shame for a club that made men out of Zisis, Dikoukis, Kakiouzis, Hatzis etc

Does anyone know the colours that Rethymno plays in? I know that the Rethymno volleyball team plays in yellow and black and occasionaly in orange and black, but I think I have seen a recent photo from an A2 game between Rethymno and KAOD where the Cretans were wearing blue and white... They must be a different club then... Just a question in case someone knows.

Olympia Larissa made an offer to Istvan Nemeth (G/1.92m), who played for Prokom in the Euroleague last season.
And according to Eurobasket he rejected it... and decided to sign with AEL Larissa. Good decision, I will be able to watch him on ERT SAT :).

I have a question which is only party related to the topic: when the season starts?
I suppose to be in Athens for a few days in mid September. Does anybody know or know a link where to find the info, if there are any games (league or friendly) scheduled in SEF or OAKA on 17th, 18th and 19th? Just wondering...

Yes, they wear blue-white.
It's nice to have a Cretan team back in A1.Cretan Panathinaikos fans will be able to cheer for our team, on their island, again.:D

Normally we could find some info about when the season starts in www.esake.gr
but it has nothing! Is there another site for A1?

At this moment the draw of the greek league takes place in a hotel in Athens. According to the league's site, the program of the games will be available later tonight in www.esake.gr

The games begin on 11/10.

Would you be interested in a post with the program in latin characters? :)

there is the chance that PAO will play the 3 games without fans in the cup so there will be fans for PAO-Aris...
in matter of fact the chances are 25%

Apollon Patras has a new coach, the Israeli Erez Bitman. Any info about him?
What style of game does he prefer?

I'm a bit surprised with Olympias signings as well. They signed Belser and Buckman for the US positions + Djikanovic and Kurtovic for the european positions, while extending Vukadinov. So if they also sign Nemeth their foreigner spots are full and I guess Jönzen is gone (he also didn't attend the first practise). What is interesting is that Larissa has a lot of young greek players on the roster - some of them have to get playtime as it looks atm. Maybe they hope for one or two of them to grow into an important role during the season, like it happened on other teams like Iraklis or PAOK before. If that won't happen their roster doesn't look too great, really.
It looks like they won't sign Nemeth at the end - I just been told that Istvan Neymeth signed with Vojvodina Nowi Sad, where he did play a few years ago...
