It's sad that we have to pay for players to commit to the National Team. Such is the reality, since they can earn more in the PBA. :(

The top-tier basketball countries need only to call upon their stars and they probably play without pay. I hope we get to that point again, but still keep the level of play as high as we have it right now with the Gilas team, or even better.

Jones Cup dispatch: How to get over a tough loss? KFC and planking!

Charles Tiu, special to InterAKTV · Monday, August 8, 2011 · 11:32 pm

For the duration of the 2011 Jones Cup in Taipei, SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team assistant coach Charles Tiu, brother of Chris, will be filing exclusive dispatches for InterAKTV.

The boys took the loss to Jordan hard earlier. But there’s nothing better to get over a tough loss than to hang out together in the laundry and recreation room to eat our favorite comfort food: KFC!

After filling up on fried chicken, the boys go planking. Can you guess which members of SMART-Gilas are involved?

The only player whom I think will be willing to play without is Chris Tiu. We all know that he doesn't need the money he gets from Smart Gilas and not even too keen on joining the PBA.

So it's not about the money, eh? :D

On a more serious note, this is indeed good news for the Gilas program, as they'd have more leverage in the negotiations. And no bidding war will happen because the PBA has a cap on the initial contract they can offer.

But as someone pointed out who will shoulder the expenses? Shared among different sponsors? Purely from Smart?

Another issue though is that some of the players may want to gain more playing time and not rot in the bench of Gilas. After all, these are competitive basketball players we are talking about-- of course, they want to prove themselves worthy. Namely 12th men Ballesteros and Ababou both of whom are very talented in their own right and Barroca (what happens to his playing time with Alapag there? Although Alapag is not that young so he might have his chance in the future...) Everyone else is pretty much set in Toroman's rotation so methinks, Casio, Tiu, Lassiter, Lutz, Barracael will all stay with Gilas.

great point DT...it isn't all about the money...those players who are not getting playing time with gilas should enter the pba draft as they can showcase their talents there.
also, with gilas being extended 2 more years, will the "reinforcements" be included in the gilas extension or are they planning on training the 10-man core exclusively again then add uber late reinforcements in 2013? my take, get a whole damn team now...train them exclusively...don't even think of adding reinforcements down the road. if they want to get norwood or whoever, get them now.

Agreed. And maybe, make the pool even larger (and i don't mean the likes of Slaughter or Williams/Alapag) under the "exclusive" training at least for the next two years.

With the eventual retirement of Asi Taulava after his last tournament in Fiba Asia Championships.

Douthit is 31 years old and he might be nearing the end of his prime as a basketball player.

Jason Ballesteros who currently is the third center of this team having a subpar performance for a long time now.

It is very obvious that PILIPINAS needs a center not one, not two but THREE. YES, TEAM PILIPINAS NEEDS 3 centers after this year. We still need Douthit if we ever qualify for the Fiba World Championships but it is better to come prepared in case of any eventuality.

I hope Kiefer Ravena, Ferrer, Taha, Amer, Abueva, Vanopstal, Ray Parks and Junmar Fajardo(wake up the Kraken out of Fernadez hands) be included in the future pool. Sort like a Team B for now. Along with Fil am Christian Banchero, Brandon Rosner, Stephen Holt, Fil German Stanghinger(not sure of the spelling) and a new naturalize player be added as a reserve to replace Douhit in the future if Douhit is to old already or got injured.

with lots of fil-ams being lured to play here...i hope we could also train bigmen like taha(mit), AVO torres paredes (dlsu), slaughter (admu)...plus a naturalized player. our big man lineup is solid in the future...

it's a sad fact..that after 10 years, Taulava is still considered "dominant" in the PBA..wala tayo pamalit, and it seems like if Taulava won't retire from NT duties, we'll be needing him 'til he's 40+ yrs old.

You know the ULTIMATE problem in this one on why is it not that possible?
"Schools lending they players to the NT"...
