I don't want to sound obnoxious but I wonder why it took the SBP this long to realize that we have better chances getting a slot in the World Championships.

'cause the former brain of the organization wanted the Olympic dream for our team.

isn't it obvious that the Stakeholders were hoping that MVP would continue financing it ..... however it looks MVP had other plans and had become more wise than shouldering everything and then actually bearing not only the financial loses but also the brunt of the criticism for wrong decisions made.

MVP is targeting the London Olympics as it is where he would like to use as a platform to promote his Philippine Business Empire to the rest of the world.

They need to find-out where to get the funding for the salaries. And this is for 2 more years which also mean there's also an escalation in salary in the 2nd year.

GILAS program extension is said to mean 250k from 150k/month. Wow, that will make me think twice too.

This would make the Gilas players really think twice as the first year Rookie Max salary is mandated to be only 175k only.

with this increase
it will attract more elite players to join the gilas

The Philippine team is getting better every year, They have a lot of skillful players and they seem to have grown in confidence.” ~ Coach Baldwin (Jordan)

thanks coach baldwin. if not for marcio's ill advise timeout, the outcome will be different.

am sure a number of PBA Governors are not happy with this. Expect them to voice out their displeasure soon. The coming PBA Rookie Draft might turn out to be a very big bust. Paul Lee's dream of becoming the #1 pick might actually happen.

hontiveros hasnt resign yet with air21 right? and norwood just finish his 3 year rookie contract with ROS? hmmm... interesting

its like saying " if you dont cooperate with us, you wont get them"

but will MVP still shoulder it? hmmm..

Talking about Chemistry, how about Physics class today?
Topic: Newton's 3rd Law of Motion
Example: Asi's 2 swings on that faggot! :D

it's good to know that our prayers were heard--sbp extending gilas program up to the world championship's qualifier.

wish them the best and may the players continue to prioritize playing for the NT rather than going pro.

Nice, which means Ravena, Ray Parks, Greg, Fajardo, Banchero, Ferrer, Rosner, Holt, Ramos, Abueva etc, will be well supported and trained in the future. I hope Toroman is included. By the way off topic, i hope they also do the same for Football and other sports.

I wonder how the bigwigs of the PBA would react to this scenario.

Heard that Powerade has sent representatives to Taipei. I think they'll scout and try to persuade some of their targets. Also, other teams will offer contracts to players through their agents. I still hope Gilas mgt. would give them a better offer. 175K is for the rookie contract, that is max. But MVP is too wise to give away these good players that he nurtured. If they get drafted by other PBA teams it would mean lesser chances of winning by his temas TNT and Meralco. Pinalaki mo, tapos yun pa ang makakalaban mo. Better give the best Gilas players contracts. I think they are still studying who to give "this" or "that" much of a contract.

So it's not about the money, eh? :D

On a more serious note, this is indeed good news for the Gilas program, as they'd have more leverage in the negotiations. And no bidding war will happen because the PBA has a cap on the initial contract they can offer.

But as someone pointed out who will shoulder the expenses? Shared among different sponsors? Purely from Smart?

Another issue though is that some of the players may want to gain more playing time and not rot in the bench of Gilas. After all, these are competitive basketball players we are talking about-- of course, they want to prove themselves worthy. Namely 12th men Ballesteros and Ababou both of whom are very talented in their own right and Barroca (what happens to his playing time with Alapag there? Although Alapag is not that young so he might have his chance in the future...) Everyone else is pretty much set in Toroman's rotation so methinks, Casio, Tiu, Lassiter, Lutz, Barracael will all stay with Gilas.

Pick Barroca over Tiu...

Pick Barroca over Tiu...

business wise, it would be difficult to make your highest paid player just a reserve player. More so that additional investment was made in accomodating his younger brother as assistant coach. Then you also have to note that it is also the Tiu family who is sponsoring the Womens National Basketball Team plus the SBP also had a huge bill to pay Discovery Suites since they were the official home of all the teams that participated in the last FIBA Asia Champions Cup. So you do not want to make the Tiu family unhappy. ;)

Keep dreaming

RoS is not the stupid (as Christoper Lao) to release their Marquee player.
