Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. IV

I see the end of two players in gilas uniforms namely pingris and rdo. Well for one RDO has been playing for gilas since 2011 and that is 5-6 in total. Pingris started playing for Gilas since 2013. It is the chance of other players to show their stuff as replacement for this two players.

The 12 PBA players that will be announce this month were personally picked by coach chot.

So Chot is doubling down on DDO and small ball. Guinto makes sense in that case. He maybe undersized but should have the footspeed to match against mobile bigs.

I fear we will see the marginalization of JF. His and Blatches tandem were exposed defensively in the OQT. But I still think he can improve defensively enough to be a major contributor.

I fear Chots DDO works only with above average centers, Douthit in Asia, Blatche in Worlds. This is to compensate for being undersized from 1 to 4.

But at least this team will start playing at the SEABA tourney. More time to gel and iron out kinks.

Ok let the prediction game of the 12 official PBa ( none cadet players) begin, note I'm just talking about the official one player designated not the 2nd , 3rd etc who could be included at discreation of the PBA team. Official meaning sent to PBA commissioners office
Here's my pick predictions
1.Meralco’s Jonathan Grey,
2. NLEX’ Bradwyn Guinto
3. Blackwater’s Art de la Cruz
4.GlobalPort’s Terrence Romeo,
5. San Miguel Beer’s JuneMar Fajardo,
6. Barangay Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar,
7.Alaska’s Calvin Abueva
8.Rain Or Shine’s Almazan (Gabe Norwood will be requested as 2nd)
9.TNT Troy Rosario , ( Castro wil be added)
10.Pheonix- Intal
11. Star- Lee
12 Mahindra - ? , never mind no need :) or just add Parks

Here are the 11 PBA vets I predict.

The big no-no with Chot's small-ball from the get go, IMO, is that it won't even get past China.

To beat China, you have to go big. Proof of this is TAB's paltry, 2015 FIBA Asia mistake-- followed closely in the OQT, the other heavily used Castro/Romeo tandem of small-ball. Will it be on the repeat? Scary, disastrous thought.

This Chot rendezvous is not viewed to go very far.

Well the obsession started 27 years ago..that we can beat the giants on our game not beating them using their game..

I think Tabs Fiba Asia team was pretty good considering it mostly consisted of 3rd tier and past prime guys.

Switch Wright with Hontiveros and JF with Asi, we could have beaten them. Actually if we switched Wright with Chan in the OQT it could have been much closer. Despite JFs defensive issues he killed NZ inside. With Wright Tab could have had more leeway in his lineups.

Despite the OQT results I feel Tab actually built a system that was less dependent on Blatche. A shooter like Wright and a mobile defensive big like Guinto could have done wonders for that team. Hope Chot would be flexible enough to incorporate Tabs principles.

Whatever it is that TAB built, will have no trace whatsoever one teeny-eeny bit come Chot Reyes' second coming with Gilas. Significance of TAB's tenure? Not sure, not quantifiable but, I'm sure Baldwin imparted to Gilas, one, too many, basketball tid bits that can be considered treasures, but may have little to no consequence for the DDO and for Chot's present hardwood applications.

If small balls second coming prove the conqueror for styles in the Asian-Oceania harcourt scene, I will be the first to heave praise to Chot and his genius, I'm afraid though that that is harping on deadwood and it is rather a futile investment of hope and promise for Filipino hoop success.

I hope I am dead wrong!

Against Australia and New Zealand it's actually not the size of their bigs that is the concern it's the size of their guards and the speed of their bigs. That's our main issue.

Nope. Our main issue is actually the "secret scouts" surrounding gilas. :p

Yes, that's why I pointed out that we only need to add Wright and Guinto to the OQT line-up and it would've made a lot of difference.

I agree that our perimeter guys could not keep up with NZ's. TAB either played Jeff and swallowed the points his guy made or benched him for Norwood and watch the offense go nowhere. With Wright and Belo we have two perimeter guys who can put the ball in the basket but are at least decent defensively.

On the big's side, Japeth would've been the ideal guy against NZ. However, his performance against France and the tune-ups did not give much confidence that he could do better and JF was killing NZ. Japeth is still the ideal defensive guy for NZ type teams. He has shown some improvements in terms of patience this conference. But there are still questions on performance under pressure and post defense. That's why we need a guy like Guinto, a hard-nosed worker who can defend the post, rebound, set picks and is not a liability on pick and rolls. Guinto should replace Pingris. JF can be used as an offensive weapon but can be benched if his defense is exploited. Just like Enes Kanter in OKC, who still scores and rebounds but with limited minutes off the bench.

with most mentioning guinto, he will be our new ping, he may not be as athletic and energetic as ping but physical strength he has it. if coach chot selects him, he could be our breakout "small" big man much like ping was back in 2013. forget about rosario being the next rdo or ping, troy is more of a SF now, he has a shooters mentality, anyone saw his last game of 2016? when he was making back to back 3's you can see he was feeling it, he goes to a spot where he could be open, he was open many times however, fonacier was hot too where there were times troy was asking for the ball esp in the corner and wing spots.

Well the obsession started 27 years ago..that we can beat the giants on our game not beating them using their game..

actually that is the right mentality. use your strength. the problem is -- our strength is that we are fundamentally sound in every position, and we are fast, quick, and very creative and also great shooters and passers.
if you would look at that -- we are actually became deficient in most of our strength. Many players, when exposed to international ball will claim inexperience as the issue. I call that lame excuse. next, we are not as fast and as quick as before simply because the rest of the field became as fast and quick as we do OR EVEN BETTER. So now, we are down to our real super strength before, and yet we became SUPER HIGHLY deficient in two of these attributes. WE are sore/ poor/ etc. etc. shooters AND PASSERS.
our saving grace, which is being creative is also taking a hit in recent years as well as we become more structured. even the way we play small ball, which was supposed to be an organized chaos, became too structured. Case in point is that during the WC, players keep passing the ball as if following a particular count when they could have broken those plays because they were already open. Gilas keep repeating these "unorganized play", even if there is no need to. that is why we this is one of the reason why we lost to argentina, and why we lost to puerto rico. we were read.
For me, if we insist on small ball, yet we don't make up for it with high accuracy of shooting (like 60% 3-fg and 90% ft shooting), and crisper and solid passing and team defense, there's a POSSIBILITY that we MAY NOT qualify for the Olympics.
and with chot's seeming inability to stay calm and the same time take necessary risks, we are troubled as a team.

Let's not kid ourselves here. Anything we throw against NZ they will be prepared, care of analyzed.

if philippines gets the hosting, and assuming we will send an overkill lineup, will fans pack the venue say moa or araneta? there have been instances before where our neighbors sent weak line ups, or didn't even participate. hope seaba requires a full strength line up for all the others. me i prefer non metro manila venue as host like maybe binan city
