Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. IV

And let's hope that the players who will be chosen will not make any shameless alibis.

Easy out: i'll just say the player played through that minor injury but the team/player do not want to aggravate the injury further.

That's why the suggested rule isn't based on the team's assessment if a player is injured or not. But on defined specific events (e.g. you play a Gilas selected player more than 10 min prior to a FIBA tournament then he's required to at least dress up in uniform and tavel to the FIBA game (of course player can always act -up and pretend he's injured when he's in Gilas, but at least there should be a definitve rule , not subject to interpretation. ) failure to travel and dress up for the team merits a 5 game suspension for succeeding club team games . Point is it's not a subjective judgement call assessment if injured or not , but it's a technical call like if a video sees you stepping on the three point line couting it as a two) , here it's not subject to interpretation - you play 10 min a month prior to a FIBA game then you're declared healthy and mandated to travel with the team and suit up in uniform ( Regardless if you show up in a leg cast:)

FIBA : Players who refuse national team duty face suspension

Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Wednesday, November 23, 2016 · 9:25 pm

FIBA will be starting to crack the whip on players who turn their back from the national team in an effort to assure that in future international tournaments, countries will feature only the best talents.

Under the new rule, FIBA will have the power to mandate the federation concerned to suspend a player who will skip the national team despite being called up.

Officials of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas have already been told about this rule, according to Magesh Mageshwaran, head of FIBA Asia’s national federations and sport, who is currently in the country to meet with the Philippines’ top basketball officials.

“FIBA’s direction is really to make sure that the best players should play for the national team,” Mageshwaran told InterAksyon.com.

“The wisdom of this ruling is that playing for the national team should be a priority.”

The rule is akin to what FIFA has implemented over the years. In international football, teams are required to release players called up by the national team during an international window. Non-compliance means sanctions from the body.

Starting next year, FIBA will open the six-window qualifying tournament, patterned after FIFA, leading to the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

The flag versus club issue has bugged many players and national teams in the past.

One classic example was Hall of Famer Oscar Schmidt who, despite being drafted in the 1984 NBA Draft that included included the likes of Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and John Stockton, didn’t sign a contract offered the New Jersey Nets due to the club’s refusal to release him to the national team.

“That’s one among the many examples,” Mageshwaran said.

The Philippines is also no exception.

Through the years, Gilas Pilipinas has faced numerous problems acquiring the best players from the PBA, with the rivalry between the league’s top team owners, San Miguel Corp. and the MVP group which bankrolls the national team, believed to be an issue.

The PBA is a stakeholder of SBP and has four allocated seats in the latter’s board.

ELEMENT OF SURPRISE / FIBA introduces rule allowing teams to name final roster 24 hours before home and away qualifier

Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Thursday, November 24, 2016 · 6:40 pm

With FIBA implementing a new qualifying format next year, a new rule will also be introduced regarding lineup registrations which national teams including the Philippines can use to their own advantage.

Under the new rules, teams can start submitting initial names in their lineup 60 days before the tournament. Fifteen days before game day, teams should have submitted a preliminary roster consisting of up to 24 players and 10 coaches.

The final 12 lineup should be named 24 hours before the tournament, a move Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios believes can be a factor in the highly competitive home-and-away qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

“This flexible rule will definitely benefit us as we’ll have a chance to make changes in our line up at the last minute in case injuries happened to some of our players,” Barrios told InterAksyon.com.

“At the same time, there will be some element of surprise as we can keep our cards in our chest and announce it a day before the tournament.”

In case of an injury to a called-up player, a doctor certified by the national federation will be assigned to check and verify his condition, according to Magesh Mageshwaran, FIBA Asia’s head of national federations and sport, during a workshop attended by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas officials at the PhilSports Complex.

The first phase of the six-window FIBA qualifiers will start in November 2017.

I hope moving forward, our knowledgeable analysts in this forum would not divulge too much information with regards our player. Especially a month before home and away games.
let us do our part. Also, it is very obvious practice in international play that NTs usually downplay their odds against any competition. If they know the opponent is really easy that it is recognized as a sure win, they usually say something like we focus on the opponent at hand, we will try our best to win the game, then if were lucky, then we can focus on the next one. Typical theme espoused by strong teams.
So let us not be too conceited and say tablado yang kalaban na yan.
we should not give others something to smirk against us about.

I am optimistic about these developments, but I am really concerned how easier would it be for any Gilas player to fake injuries mere hours before game time just so said Gilas player can avoid doing NT duties under orders from their mother teams. Yes, the doctors would have to be certified by the SBP (correct me if I'm wrong), but this is the Philippines we are talking about, where cutting corners is the SOP.

Even with these stipulations from FIBA, I still don't really think we will be able to field in the best teams possible for all the qualifying windows, players under duress by their mother teams gunning for PBA championships or just plain don't want to have to do with the national team will always find ways and excuses to skip NT duties no matter how tight the rules are.

So how about a stipulation in all PBA contracts wherein everyone who gets called up for Gilas CANNOT be traded to other teams for at least a whole year or season after their last stint with Gilas? So for example, a PBA player gets called up for the Nov 2017 window; he cannot be traded to other teams until Nov 2018 unless he suits up for Gilas again in the other windows. So in the same example, if the player gets called up for the Feb 2018 window, he cannot be traded to other teams until Feb 2019 OR the next season after that date.

Very much this, especially considering there is ONLY ONE slot for SEA in Division A, and Thailand is starting to catch up with us and THEY WILL unless we get our sh!t together. If we lose SEA, it's RIP China 2019 for us. We will have to grind it out against lesser foes in Division B until we get back to Division A.

If they really want a competitive basketball scrap that HAGOP rule.

So Slowter, Lassiter, better watch out:eek:

I think it's ok if they decide to not join again. We can't expect more with half-hearted player. And to formed a great team we need players, aside from talents and skills, must have a great motivation.

hmm, what does full strength mean, will be interesting to see what kind of line-up we will have for the SEABA, BTW what is really at stake, if we place 2nd in SEABA what does it really mean?

RIP China 2019. Only 1 slot for SEABA in the FIBA Asia Cup leading to Division A of the WC Qualifiers.

We lose SEABA, we drop to Division B, simple as that. Might as well go for overkill to make sure we don't go there.

Element of surprise will not work with the tall backs, not anymore
apparently they have better analysts.

despite that, biases still clouds a persons thinking. If you have biases, you sometimes tend to not accept the truth.
this is the advantage of what I am saying.
Besides, analytics are mainly interpretation of data.
Data are the truth! However, how you present and analyze the data is where error may occur; and it is here were scouting may turn wrong.

So for example, if a person had actually improved his shooting, or have a better read of defenses, he can actually hide that and may just show it intermittently when the circumstances arises.
If he is shooting 35% 3-pt FG%, and he actually improved to 45% shooting. During scrimmages, he may opt to shoot at a staggering 30%.
Reading of defenses is also much harder to analyze. because the player may choose to read the defense properly or may choose to simply go straight to the ring.. alam mo yun.

Anyway, analytics is really good. but it requires a great deal of an analyst in order to really reflect a true a analysis of data. Unfortunately for pinoys, we like to show off.. kaya ayun.

Correct. And that's surely the reason why Gilas will go "full strength" in SEABA next year.

Simple. It means we will be sending a PBA-"cadet" mix plus naturalized player in SEABA (perhaps 6 PBA regulars, 5 "cadets" and a naturalized player). It means that we will not just be sending an all-cadet team in SEABA like we did this year simply becoz the stake is much higher in next year's SEABA.

Correct. And that's surely the reason why Gilas will go "full strength" in SEABA next year.
