Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. IV

I wonder if Carlo Lastimosa or Scottie Thompson can play the point guard position. How will it affect their scoring game.If just in case any of the point guards would be injured, I think it will be very interesting to have either one of them play the point guard role.

I think we already have a deep pool of talent at point guard (natural point guard) to choose from just in case any of our shoo-in point guards (like Castro) get injured or won't be available. I would rather pick a Tenorio or a Barroca or a Casio to replace an injured Castro or a Romeo than picking either a Lastimosa or Thompson as a replacement.

Did some research on Matthew Wright this morning and a bit surprised to know that Wright averaged 16 pts./game while shooting 36% frm the 3pt. zone during his senior year in college. This after averaging only single-digit in his first 3 years at St. Bonaventure University w/c is an NCAA Div. 1 school.

I think Wright will be a vital component for the national team. He will be the main outside shooter of the team.

That's the main thing people get wrong when comparing him with Lutz college career. Matt was a late bloomer and received no where near the ratings lutz had as a Freshman to Junior in US NCAA ball. What Matt did in his senior year , followed up by his French pro stint , then avg over 20 pts on 40 % from 3 as ABL Asean MVP is why he's considered a guaranteed PBA producer unlike Lutz

lutz is a pBA producer.. but on a loaded team just like in purdue he was never good outside 3rd option.. in this team if he was he will only play limited minutes..Junmar Marcio, Alex and Arwind san ka lulugar diyan?

Lutz was an above average player during his rookie year. He was at one time leading SMB in scoring but that was before Junmar became dominant and Marcio came in. Send him to team who can give him PT just like NLEX and Phoenix, he can prove hos worth.

You might be wright:) if lutz gets the PT, with Matt at least it looks like he will get the PT in Phoenix , but the main thing is he is really accustomed to being the main scorer, (e.g. Malaysia, US NCAA etc) while Lutz never really had that role. So that's a huge adjustment if ever he is asked to play like an import or main guy

I agree send him to Phoenix so he could play alongside Wright.

Chris Lutz has considerably higher 3PT% at 39.9 while Marcio Lassiter is at 31.8 source: http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/marcio-lassiter-1.html
I think it all boils down how they do in the pros.

Yes please, FIBA. Lay on the Ban Hammer of Justice to anyone who refuses the call of flag and country!

Unfortunately FIBA does not have real power over these other leagues. You think they'd suspend any NBA player? :D

Also, injury excuse is always valid (injury or no injury). Lame attempt by FIBA to gain control when they don't have actually have it.

Mahirap i-implement to. Players and teams will always come out with excuses that would look valid even if they're not.

True, at end of the day it's only the league where the player plays, that has the power to suspend.

It will be interesting to see how the PBA reacts if a player like Junmar (if selected under the 1 player per team) does not play for Gilas even for example he plays for SMB just 15 days (healthy) prior to the tourney.

So speaking of an implementable rule , the PBA actually can form a rule that if a player is fielded/used in the court for 10 min by his club team , then for whatever reason does not even travel /suit up for FIBA competition if invited. he then will be suspended to play for his mother team for X (e.g 5 games) amount of games.

That way the onus is put on team management to what do with a NT selected player, if they force him to play say in the playoffs for 10 min ( even if he's imjured) and he can't show-up for Gilas then they risk him being suspended for 5 games next conference.

Easy out: i'll just say the player played through that minor injury but the team/player do not want to aggravate the injury further.

@asp9 instagram A landmark agreement between the SBP and the PBA. #mabuhay #labanpilipinas #puso #SBP #PBA #collaboration
