Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. IV

Not open for further replies.
I hope PBA will still lend their players to the national team for international tournaments. I don't think it will be too much if each team will lend just 1 player.

San Miguel - Fajardo
Ginebra - Aguilar
TNT - Rosario
Meralco - Dillinger
Rain or Shine - Lee

NLEX - Taulava (can still play)
Star - Sangalang
Mahindra - Canaleta
Alaska - Abueva
Globalport - Romeo

Blackwater - Erram
Phoenix - Intal

Imports can take the place of these players in their club teams while they're playing for the national team.

I just have this crazy idea in my head.. why don't we just horde 14 year old black americans from poor socioeconomic families.. or even africans, give them passport before 16, give them good shelter & support, etc, and make them play basketball 24/7 in the phils. With their innate talent and athleticism, plus the diskarte and IQ of basketball coaches in the Phils, perhaps we can have a very talented basketball landscape. They'll eventually get the FIlipino culture, and make Phil basketball more competitive. With FIBA, no problem, Tony Parker is American who grew up in France, and now he just erased our Olympic dreams.. Problem is with the PBA.. can't play without Filipino blood lol... anyway if only PBA allows UAAP and NCAA imports to play professionally, pure-bred Filipinos in turn, will step their game up knowing that they will have to compete for a slot with bigger and better players, kumpiyansa na kasi yung iba na maddraft porque bata ni coach, bata ni ganyan ni ganito.. A lot of players in the PBA doesn't even deserve to be there, how come we call it a premier league lol.

My suggestion is more radical. Let basketball evangelist Billly Ray Bates come back to the PHL and allow him to "propagate" and spread his "gospel" to willing vessels.

But seriously, is he really a champion of safe sex that nobody, since 1983, came out and bore him at least one little black superboy? Kinda hard to imagine.

ROS' owners suggestions of PBA players lending two players for Gilas is a good solution for the side when it comes to the qualifiers. We'd easily qualify IMO with that set up. Hope SBP and PBA are innovative enough to agree to something like that.

Gilas would be so fucked for qualifying for China 2019 with just cadets, and that impending failure will hurt the sport in the PH which the PBA will also feel.

Never mind that the original US Dream Team had mercenary power on their side, i.e., the Nigerian Hakeem Olajuwon.

Olajuwon wasn't part of the original Dream Team, he was with the 1996 Dream Team III though. Jamaican born Patrick Ewing was with the original 1992 Dream Team

A solid lineup for future Pilipinas team for me. Can be serviceable up to two or three more FIBA Asia tournaments:

PF - Rosario, Almazan and Van Opstal

Center - Fajardo and Greg are still young and serviceable up too, maybe, two or even 3 more Fiba Asia games.

Small forward - Kobe Paras and Matt Belo

PG - Ravena and Parks Jr.

Naturalize- Let us look for a defensive and rebounding presence ala Deadre or Whiteside or at least N’Diaye type of a player. Rebounding and lack of shotblocking presence is what really killing our team if you watched the pocket tournaments and the OQT.

Shooting guard - Clarkson(hopefully will be finally be cleared by Fiba) and Matthew Wright.

Thank you for the correction. :D

Seriously, FIBA must adopt the same eligibility rules as FIFA, which allows heritage players to play as locals but at the same time blocking rich teams like Qatar from hiring Bosnia Team B to compete for them.

Problem with cadets is again, it's too undersized to even have a chance with the likes of China New Zealand and Australia, and heck, even Iran could whoop are ass*s. While it is for the long term goals of Gilas, the main problem hasn't been addressed yet again. Our players from SG up to Center position are unfit in their respective positions for their size by international standards. Pretty sure the likes of Mac Belo, Chris Javier and Arvin Tolentino will still play as bigs.. imagine if we let them play the 3 and 2s, let them get used to it, but again, knowing coaches here in the Philippines, basta 6'4-6'6 ka big man ka na. Now is the perfect opportunity to let explosive CJ Perez learn how orchestrate a team. Imagine him and Jalalon, along with hugot Terrence and Bobby Ray manning the point guard position, and I forgot to include Kiefer who's just a few steps away from becoming a dangerous point guard. Konting bilis pa. Again, we are a point-guard country.. Our point guards can hold their own against the best of the best. Another guy they should include is Andrei Caracut, the kid has good motor and has great potential. I'm upset though, with the inclusion of Gotladera and Yutien, they'd get eaten alive, I'm sorry.. and there are players there that should stay in Philippine soil: Ed Daquiaog, Roger Pogoy, Almond, Von and Russell Escoto. they're not at all fit for the international game.. Again, just like the PHilippines adjusted our school calendar (from August-May instead of June-March) and moved to K-12, to meet international standards, we should do this with our national team as well and all our club teams.. Ibagay niyo ang height ng player sa kung ano dapat talaga posisyon niya

The problem is yung Scouting and Recruiting. If makaka discover ng Fil-foreign talents ay huli na parati.

We are lucky matt ganuelas and justin melton were born in the philippines, or else they would be screwed up by the hagop rule

INCLUDE SPORTS IN COUNTRYSIDE DEVELOPMENT THRUST

Based on various pronouncements of President Duterte, the new administration is gearing its development thrust towards the countryside, away from what is perceived as “imperial Manila.”
If implemented as promised, this would mean that more infrastructure projects and other activities to enhance and accelerate growth in the countryside will be implemented during the term of this administration.

This thrust of government efforts to improve the quality of life at the grass root level will include aspects such as health, education, among others. This also includes sports as pronounced by newly appointed Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Butch Ramirez, who stated that one of PSC’s major programs will be aimed at developing sports at the grass root level and discovering local talents.

Existing grassroots program on collegiate basketball
There are existing programs initiated by basketball enthusiasts that Chairman Ramirez may want to look at for adoption by his office. One such program was initiated by a non-profit basketball organization, Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).

In partnership with over 35 collegiate leagues all over the country, PCCL conducts and manages annually the National Collegiate Championship. The games bring together top collegiate teams in nationwide multi-level competitions to recognize regional champions, and ultimately, the national collegiate champion for the season.
After mother leagues complete their tournament at city and provincial levels, PCCL conducts and manages the next level of competitions to determine the regional champions that will qualify to the national championships held at Manila.

The regional champions eventually earn the right and opportunity to compete with the top teams from the major leagues in Metro Manila like the NCAA, UAAP, and NAASCU.
The PCCL initiative is acknowledged by leagues in the provinces as an effective grassroots program for collegiate teams in the countryside as it provides opportunities for competitions at the regional level, which in turn broadens competitive exposure and experience. The program started 12 years ago with the support of NCAA, UAAP, CESAFI, and a couple of leagues in Mindanao.

Television exposure provided initially by PTV-4, then Solar Sports, then up to 2015 by ABS-CBN, gave the PCCL games wide exposure nationwide. Games were played at various venues with hosting provided by local schools and universities.

Currently, the program is in partnership with over 35 mother leagues nationwide. Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipionas (SBP) has accredited PCCL in recognition of its role in collegiate basketball development through the national championship games.

Guys how about Robin Lopez? He was interested right to be our naturalize player only for Chot to say too late. Remember? How about him he fits perfectly. A rim protector who can score when needed.

PCCL tournament system needs a serious overhaul. Enough of co-champions, enough of outright Final Four slots to UAAP and NCAA champions. Instead of pitting these two champions in the Final Four, how about pitting them against each other FOR a Final Four slot? The NCR Finals will be the most awaited PCCL game asides the PCCL Finals that way.

If they are really that strong, give them only first-round byes and let them demolish everyone standing in their way. Or better yet, put them through group play and let them demolish everyone in their group.

PCCL Final Four should only consist of one from each of the following zones: NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

There are 35 leagues, we need 64 teams in the tournament if we are to use the US NCAA style single-elimination system, but we only need at least 40 teams placed into 8 groups of 5 teams each if we are to use the FIBA-style tournament system (round-robin preliminary rounds + single-elimination playoffs).

I think the FIBA-style tournament system is better. All teams are guaranteed a certain number of games before they drop out. The only problem is it takes too long.

Besides, we are so used to the US NCAA style single-elimination system anyways. One game for each round, give the higher seeds home court advantage. For example, NCR #1 seed Ateneo faces NCR #16 seed at home.

You speak the truth my friend. Until the time comes when we start producing 6'5" shooting guards, 6'7" small forwards and 6'9" stretch fours, then we will never CONSISTENTLY beat the top team in Asia which is China in tournaments that matter, much less qualify for the Olympics or World Cup. And looking at the current cadet lineup, well sorry to say but wake me up after another 10 years when we make any significant progress.

next players that i think would revolutionize philippine basketball would be paras, edu and sotto - that would materialize in about 10 years or so.

as of now, same old story. no potentially world class/nba material.

That is a nice thought. But coaches need to win to get paid. If they do what you said, who will they put in as center? A 5'8 kid? Also, not all tall kids that you will teach to play guard will actually be a decent guard. I like your idea, dont get me wrong, but how many basketball players do we have in our school system and how many can actually do want would be taught to them? I use to watch milo best either in ateneo or xavier for no reason. The camp teaches everyone the same thing. But not every kid gets to execute the same way. Long story short, we can teach everyone what we want but youll eventually see at some point who should be further developed in certain positions despite the size. I think the impotant thing is hopefully everyone have a solid undestanding and able to do the fundamentals consistently and further development start from there.

As for grass root tournaments, i actually think we should enhance and use as basis palarong pambansa. Enhance in a way that there are regional meets that eventually become a basis for the playoff teams to join the batang pba. And there should be a rule that players who started to play in his province before being taken in by a metro manila school should only be available to play for his province. This tiurnament on top of the existing palarong pambansa. Why do i like this? Its not school based and it promotes the province. If a company wants to sponsor, they can have their logo on the whole jersey because no need to put the name of the school. Pretty sure the team wont mind not having their region on the jersey or smaller than a corporate logo.

Precisely my point. Repetition (practice) could only develop certain aspects of one's game to a certain extent. Even if we die trying to develop the descendants of the Arwind Santoses, Mac Baracaels, JC Intals etc., to become "natural" guards and to try and take advantage of their height, we might still fail in that regard because they are NOT natural guards to begin with. Some people are simply more coordinated than others, and most often than not, the case is the smaller guy is the more coordinated one compared to the bigger guy. Hence, in a genetic pool of a race with a 5' 6" (i read this somewhere, not sure though if it still holds true to this day) average height, you would rarely see a cager standing 6' 4" that moves naturally like a guard.

I am all for these bigs being taught dribbling and ballhandling skills, but afaik most schools are already doing this for years now. This is why at least you see the likes of Mark Isip and Beau Belga, bigs who can put the ball to the floor. But as expected, they are but a few if not rare, and of course they sometimes look awkward doing these things.

I think the best approach here would be to continue teaching everyone guard skills regardless of height, then IDENTIFY the talls ones that has potential to be a full time guard and hone and encourage them to be one.

There is an idea, which has been floating around, that athleticism and explosiveness can be developed further if it is started a very young age. Some say having multiple sports or disciplines between age 4-10 helps in this regard. With enough coordination between government agencies, this could be a feasible option for developing world class athletes.

Antonio says coach Tab Baldwin will not be handling the team for the Challenge Cup due to other commitments | @sportsdeskph

I'm very very disappointed about this. we hired coach tab because we want a coach with no other commitment, a coach who only focus coaching our national team. when ateneo hired him i don't really mine i actualy support it because he still need to get in sharp and minsan lang naman mga International tournaments. but they said NT team is still his priority and what happen now? really dissapointing... i'm also worried on coach yeng and smc people they might use this for politics...
