RP WINS by 141 Points

No mercy.

The Philippines' 20 and under men's basketball team booked itself a finals slot in the SEABA Young Men's Tournament atfer clobbering Brunei Darussalam, 160-19, yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Nationals completely dominated the game from start to finish, forcing the Brunei players to commit an eye-poping 73 turnovers, which in turn led to an avalanche of easy baskets. At one point, the RP squad reeled off 33 consecutive points and twice fired 28 in a row.

It was a pitiful sight to watch the Brunei players fumbling the ball on almost every occasion as they were simply no match against the much taller and more skillful Filipinos. Brunei only managed to score seven points in the final 20 minutes after trailing 12-71 in the opening half.

Eight out of the 11 players fielded in by Coach Boyzie Zamar scored in double figures led by Jenkins Mesina with 25 points.

The Filipinos, who notched their second win, will meet Malaysia for the crown today at 3:30 PM. The Malaysians defeated Singapore, 71-62 in the night cap.

Scores: Philippines 160- Mesina 25, Zagala 20, Tiongco 19, Magsumbol 19, Menor 18, Sotto 17, Kong 16, R. de Ocampo 13, Reroma 7, Coronel 4, Y. de Ocampo 2

Brunei Darussalam 19- Lim Aik Hock 5, Po Yung Hai 4, Lim Chee Pin 2, Chong Ching Poh 2, Ho Pu Kok 2, Yong Chin Aull 2, Tay Kai Sen 2.

Halftime: 71-12

RP YOUTH BASKETBALL TEAM FOR ABC IN DOHA, QATAR NAMED

Manila, Aug. 16, 2000 - National head coach David (Boycie) Zamar announced the Philcom Western Union- Philippine National Team lineup yesterday composed of collegians from the NCAA, UAAP and NCRAA. The team will represent the country in the third Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Championship for Young Men in Doha, Qatar this month.

Heading the cast are Youth Team veterans Christian Coronel of San Sebastian, Britt Reroma of San Beda College, and Yancy de Ocampo of St. Francis of Assisi School System.

Zamar named 11 regulars, two alternates and four reserves who are members of either the Young Men's or the Youth basketball pool and have seen action in the first National Basketball League (NBL) recently. He said Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) president Freddie D. Jalasco Jr. will head the delegation.

The other regulars are Ronnie Zagala, on residence at FEU; Patrick Tiongco and Mark Joseph Kong, on residence at Letran; Mark Magsumbol of St. Benilde, Ranidel de Ocampo and Ervin Sotto of St. Francis of Assisi, Nelbert Omolon of Philippine Christian University, and Jean Marc Pingris and Manuel Caceres of Philippine School of Business Administration (PSBA).

Named as alternates were Rolly Menor, St. Benilde reserve, and Manuel Caceres of PSBA. Listed as reserves are Christian Cabatu, Anthony Topacio, Marren Padrones, and Romar Menor of St. Benilde who is on the injured list.

"We're all set to go. I had hoped to be able to bring Jenkins (John Joseph Mesina of San Beda), but I'm afraid he cannot make the trip. I've personally talked with San Beda authorities and they have declined to allow him to go with the team to Qatar," Zamar said.

Easy victory for RP five

Announce a tryout. Extract the best. Form a team. Train for less than two months. Win the first-ever Southeast Asia Basketball Association 18 and under basketball championships.

This was what happened as the Philippines 18 and under national team roared to victory in the recent SEABA championships at the windswept San Luis Sports Complex in Sta.Cruz, Laguna.

Lacking in preparations but not in fighting hearts, the filipino dribblers nevertheless were highly-favored to win the four-team tournament, serving as qualifying for the Asian Basketball championships set for September in Johore Baru, Malaysia.

“We’re going home as champions,” said Graham Lim, secretary-general of the Basketball Association of the Philippines. Lim, along with other BAP officials headed by executive vice-president Ogie Narvasa and treasurer Jaime Dichavez, went all-out for the team, travelling from Manila to Sta.Cruz everyday despite the inclement weather.

Missing the likes of Paolo Mendoza and Ryan Pamintuan, the nationals swept all their assignments, beating Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in succession by wide margins. In the repeat encounter, the youthful filipino dribblers dumped Singapore, 93-64, before a wildly-cheering crowd at the San Luis Sports Complex. “Defense did it. I’m proud of the team,” said coach Ato Badolato. He was ably backed up by former collegiate hotshot Louie Alas and national team member Jerome Cueto.

The victory was the second straight international title for the Filipinos, Earlier, another BAP-sanctioned team won the 22 and under SEABA championships in Brunei. Alas coach the team.

The Philippines 18 and under squad made us proud. Fans watched in droves whenever Filipino basketeers trooped to the Coliseum, which is outside the town proper. Renren Ritualo dazzled the crowd with his penetrations and outside shooting, skipper Aris Dimaunahan was tireless in defense, Jon-Jon Mesina, Marvin Ortiguerra and Melchor Latoreno ruled the shaded lane, Danzen Mariano and Kris Topacio orchestrated plays, Jerome Reyes and Teodoro Valera scored when needed as the nationals ambushed their rivals one by one.

Badolato, however, knows the ABC is another story, Last year, South Korea deposed China at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The Philippines slumped to its worst finish ever sixth place – and will now attempt to make amends.

Refusal of some UAAP coaches, however, to lend their players to the national team are hurting the team’s preparations. Observers agree that unless there’ll be changes in the composition of the team, it will be hard for the country to challenge the heavyweights.

as you can see in the news, even the RP Youth team had a hard time having a marquee collegiate player. :D:D:D

"We're all set to go. I had hoped to be able to bring Jenkins (John Joseph Mesina of San Beda), but I'm afraid he cannot make the trip. I've personally talked with San Beda authorities and they have declined to allow him to go with the team to Qatar," Zamar said.

it would be nice to see SBP will bankroll the trainings of all prospects whose age are between 12-15. they should be send to US to study and play or at least convince their parents to allow their kids to go the route that kobe and japeth did to enhance their skills. we can't rely on the trainings and experience they will be getting in playing in NCAA or UAAP. this is not to demean or under estimate the said leagues but in the US, competition is very high and their true potential will be tested to the max.

they can't. this would have an effect on the recruitment patters for NCAA and UAAP. both organizations are stakeholders or board members for SBP. you don't want to alienate your stakeholders/board members. i wish it was that easy though. but it is what it is.

yeah other countries. we should stop being insecure with other countries. we should stop comparing. its just different the way it is. actually this has been discussed here million times already. SBP is just a mere beggars. we do what is given. on the bright side on this. once they graduate college it will be free for all for SBP and PBA. it is also a good opportunity for youth players to develop and have experience on international stage. marquee players are already good and some of the members of the youth team are basically left overs which will develop given the experience. as mentioned here before, this should change come K to 12 since it would extend eligibility of HS players and also NCAA and UAAP has graciously moved their tournament to pave way for this afaik. so it should be fine. let us just relax and cheer for batang gilas. they worked hard in practice for this. it would be an insult to their hardwork if we keep on mentioning names that aren't there. these kids aren't paid.they only have lunch.some of them commute on their own. whats done is done.

it really is very tiring repeating myself over over again. :D:D:D silence is indeed golden. i should keep my mouth closed on this topic. :D:D:D

it is also too tiring painstakingly waiting when we can see another successful pinoy basketball team that give us glory just like in the past.:D:D:D:D
thanks a lot. i've been away in this forum for 5 years. i lost my old account.

That was quite a tall team.

Kong 6'7"
YDO 6'8"
Sotto 6'7"
RDO 6'5"
Pingris 6'5"
Caceres 6'4"
Omolon 6'4"

Its not a new phenomena

Its not a new phenomena

I'm kinda worried that with the ways things going in the youth level, the under 16 and under 18 where we are not successful and we are beaten even by the likes of Chinese Taipei and Japan, in the future at senior level, we will be over taken by our Asian counterpart.

It's alarming that the youth level of other Asian countries are getting better than our youth team. I don't know if its something to do with growth spurt, or lack of training.

Being beaten by Taiwan & Japan in the youth level, be it U-16 or U-18 tournaments, is not new to Philippine basketball. Nangyayari na talaga yan from time to time during the 90's & 2000's. East Asian teams, China, Korea, Japan & Taiwan are really the teams to beat in the youth level. Iran from time to time will finish among the top 4 in the U-16 or U-18 tournaments but the Iranians couldn't do it on a consistent basis. Iran got beaten by the Phi. a few years ago. In fact there was even a time, just recently actually, that Iran got beaten by Iraq in a youth tournament.

I would be much more worried if Middle Eastern teams or Arab countries start to beat the Philippines & East Asian teams on a consistent basis in the youth level.

All tall, the 6'5 below guys are athletic and hybrid guys and who thought 16 years from now they still a fixture in our nt kahit pilitan na nga lang..So dont blame BAP on all the fiasco on Phil basketball, they just like our SBP experiencing are too small against the bigwigs that is the college leagues at that time..

And 2 of them arent playing in NCAA and UAAP schools hehe

the u20/21 tournament was called by the europeans as tournament for cadets.. that's why the name cadet team/pool come from the level after the youth/junior level and before the senior level..

Yun ang long term picture kulelat man tayo sa tournament na yan may 2 player dyan napakinabnag ng husto nung game sa korea 13 years from now..

Ang magandang balita eh di na 6'5 ang mga hybrid forward na meron tayo.. 6'9 na..

Can you post a link for U18 with ping/rdo? Cant see sorry the closest one i can find is the Nokia RPU16 with Sangalang

no u16 then the level is u18 and u20 back then..the best players on their batch are not them, the names are Yap, Artadi, Villanueva, Gonzales and we are not talking about filams he like Alvarez Wilson and Cortez..

request to change topic po.. :)

is it true that Kiefer is eyeing the dleague draft? saw him posting workouts with Damian Lillard etc.. While it's a good sign that he's (perhaps) aiming high, I hope he'll not be contented on just being there as a boy among men. He seems too starstruck with NBA players, like our Gilas team in the WC 2014.. their (our players) body language tells: "Papicture muna kami kay idol bago kami talunin".. It happened with Ray Parks.. posting "glad to be here" pictures in every facilities he worked out at prior to being undrafted. Man, we cannot progress to the next level if our players still get starstruck and awed with NBA-level players. Yes I get it, it's not everyday that you get to play with NBA players, but why not focus on beating them or at least getting on their level? Our players need to stop being fanboys. I remember watching a Chris Paul talk about transitioning his mindset from being a fan to being a killer after getting drafted.

Anyway, i hope kiefer makes it, and when he does i hope it gets better from there. His iq is phenomenal. He got his family's support. He's got a trust fund. He's got the athleticism. Got just about the right size for a point guard. But he needs to stop being a fan. He actually made a documentary about Playing alongside the "men" or the "big boys" of Gilas... no serious player would try to document being a bench warmer and eventually being cut.

there is nothing wrong with being starstruck with nba players. not only they are bball players they are also bbal and nba fans too.

Posted this in the U18 thread, but fits here more , for all the talk that the 2014 Gilas WC team had better offense well here are the stats

we really didn't have any problems scoring in the OQT we scored 84 pts vs France and avg 40 % from three , vs NZ we scored 80 pts , 40 % from three. On both games we made 11 threes. if you translate that to a 48 minute game that equates to avg 100 pts a game and this is vs a world class athletic team on both occassions, Not an Asia or even Chinese team that is slow. but good defensive teams. So for all the flaws you mentioned in offense (e.g No DDO etc) , the stats don't really support it .

here are WC offensive stats
vs Croatian team in 40 min we scored just 70 pts
vs Greek squad we scored (70 pts)
vs Senegal we scored 64 pts in regulation
vs Puerto Rico 73 pts
vs Argentina 81 pts

So on avg in regulation play Gilas 2 in the WC avg 71 pts vs Gilas 4 OQT which avg 82 pts , so where is the better offense there?

Where the team really got hurt in the OQT is in defenses. mis assignments and poor transition particularly on Blatche ( the center and supposedly the anchor on defense , especially for an undersize team) , that's really the story. Talked to one NZ coach and he could not believe at how poorly Blatche came down on defense
