Where is Reynel Hugnatan? I believe Bajar should be remove to give a slot for the Flying A before he retires.

More like the Frederick Canlas who was the back-up to Yancy de Ocampo in those late 90's St Francis champion teams, along with the likes of Ervin Sotto. That was a very tall lineup, with at least four players standing 6'5" or taller.

i would rather choose a Francis De Leon or a Mark Andaya than Canlas...

Painters ink Norwood,
Solomon to 3-year deals

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BY NOLI CORTEZ

RAIN or Shine took the first concrete step in its efforts to be more competitive in its third PBA season by sealing deals yesterday with Gabe Norwood and Solomon Mercado.

Norwood, the top pick in last Sunday's draft, and Mercado, the No. 5 selection acquired in a trade with Alaska last Monday, were inked to three-year deals worth the league maximum of P150,000 a month. Their salaries could escalate by as much as 50 percent for each of the following years.

"With these contracts out of the way, Norwood and Mercado can now concentrate on playing and helping us become more of a force to reckon with," said Terry Que, co-owner of the Elasto Painters with Raymund Yu.

The team's No. 12 pick, point guard Tyrone Tang, was also signed to a three-year pact, but the team owners said the amount is far lower than the salaries of Norwood and Mercado. They refused to divulge further details.

Que and Yu had earlier said they want the team to adopt a run-and-gun type of play, adding Norwood and Mercado can be like Ginebra's backcourt duo of Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa.

Aside from the three rookies, Rain or Shine also has Denver Lopez, Ryan Arana, Don Dulay, Jojo Tangkay and Joey Mente manning the backcourt.

Mercado and veteran Eddie Laure were acquired for Rain or Shine's Joe Devance and a second round pick. To help offset the loss of the 6-foot-7 De Vance, the Elasto Painters have also taken in free agent Mark Andaya.

Talk N Text, meanwhile, has started negotiations with its four draft picks, led by No. 2 selection Jared Dillinger and No. 3 Jason Castro.

Phone Pals management has already made a tender offer to Dillinger last Monday and the 6-foot-5 guard is reportedly already happy with the initial bid.

Castro's agent, Danny Espiritu, is set to sit down with TNT officials today, as well as agents representing the team's No. 4 pick, 6-foot-6 center Rob Reyes.

The Phone Pals are also set to make a tender offer to Pong Escobal, their No. 12 selection, who still plays for San Beda in the NCAA.

"Everyone will be signed," stressed TNT assistant team manager Virgil Villavicencio.

Washington excited to join SanMig
By Waylon Galvez, Manila Bulletin
September 4, 2008

Forward Jay Washington is looking forward for a fresh start when he suits up for San Miguel Beer in the coming PBA season.

Washington was shipped by Talk 'N Text -- his home for three years -- to San Miguel Beer during the Rookie Draft last Sunday in favor of the latter's No. 3 pick.

"He's happy to be with San Miguel Beer," Charlie Dy, who represents Washington, said yesterday. "He can't wait to play, he's excited and he hopes to contribute in San Miguel's campaign."

The 6-foot-6 Washington, the former Eckerd College stalwart, will be back in the country this weekend after a vacation in the United States.

The addition of Washington, who is expected to get near the maximum salary spread over three years, will improve the guard and forward rotations of SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen.

Tanquincen denied reports they will use Washington only as a trade bait, saying they want to make full use of his talent.

"We'll definitely use him. No plans of a trade," said Tanquingcen. "Washington is a type of player who can play 2, 3 and 4 positions. Definitely, he's a good addition to our team (formerly Magnolia Beverage)."

Washington's arrival to SMB also came at a time when the team is looking for a substitute for Danny Ildefonso who is still recuperating from surgeries on both ankles to remove bone spurs.

The former two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) will be out for at least four months.

"That's why the trade made sense because we want somebody who can fill the void while Danny is out," he added.

San Miguel will be Washington's third team. He was originally Air21's No.1 pick overall during the 2006 Rookie Draft, but he was traded to TNT where he signed a three-year contract, which expired last August 15.

He is likely to share playing minutes with Danny Seigle, Lordy Tugade and Wesley Gonzales.

A member of the First Mythical Team during the 2006-07 Season, Washington ranked 12th overall among the top performers of the previous season averaging almost 12 points, six rebounds and two assists in 32 games with the Pals.

Meantime, TNT has signed forward Rob Reyes, its No. 4 pick overall, to a maximum allowable deal for a rookie.

The deal is worth P8.7 million in three years, where the one-time stalwart of Harbour Centre stands to receive P150, 000 in his first year (2008-09), P225, 000 in the second year (2009-10) and a maximum of P350, 000 in the final year (2010-11).

TNT is also negotiating with three other rookies, Fil-Am forward Jared Dillinger, the No. 2 pick overall in the Draft, Jason Castro (No. 3) and Pong Escobal (No. 11).

AFTER his last PBL stint with Toyota-Otis, Don Yabut got a job in the Middle East where he remains to this day.

aw! really CANLAS is now an ACE, man i've been watching him in LIGA and NBC, he's not that potent. i think what ALASKA needs is a big man who hussles, like an OMOLON,PINGRIS,SANTOS or best case scenario RUDY HATFIELD, which rebounds and dies for the ball. i think that can really help THOSS inside.

to Mr. DREAMWALKER congrats on your baby man. hope you'll be a good father so we will have a future basketball player with a monicker "DREAMWALKER Jr.":D

Magnolia will again be called San Miguel again??
maybe they didn't like the luck they had in "Magnolia".
thinking that new name would bring new game, just like Welcoat did, now that they will bring the 'Rain or Shine' banner instead.

ahh i see... i dont know if its him or canlas i saw in galleria... boy he's tall! and got all bones! :D damn he's like a walking stick with a shirt on! he seems like he's goin to fall or somethin... :p

In fairness to Yabut, he had some pretty decent post moves. Too bad he didn't get into a PBA lineup. He would've been a good role player there.
