SMB, Alaska get quality big men
By Reuel Vidal
THE next Philippine Basketball Association All-Filipino season opens in a month’s time, but already the San Miguel Beermen and the Alaska Aces were recipients of two franchise-altering big men in Jay Washington and Joe Devance.
Devance was shipped by the Welcoat Dragons to Alaska in exchange for rookie Solomon Mercado and veteran Eddie Laure. Washington was jettisoned by the Phone Pals for Jason Castro, the third overall pick in the past PBA Draft.
The Aces were the obvious winners when they got the versatile Devance, who could play off center Sonny Thoss at the power forward position. But Rain or Shine may also benefit from this trade in terms of cohesion because Mercado, the man they got in exchange, is said to be a close friend of their top draft pick Gabe Norwood.
Devance immediately tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Alaska Aces to a convincing 106-97 decision over the visiting, import-reinforced LG Dios of South Korea at The Arena in San Juan last week.
Willie Miller led all scorers with 24 points; Jeff Cariaso had 13 markers while Thoss bulldozed his way inside for 12 points.
The South Koreans didn’t get too much from their two imports, Ivan Johnson and Brandon Crump.
The surly Johnson, nursing swollen tonsils and refusing to talk to anybody including reporters and team officials, did not even suit up and glowered from the sidelines. Crump was outplayed by Thoss in the first and second quarters before limping out of the court after landing badly in an under-goal scuffle in the third period.
Jeung Ho and Kyu Hun led the Koreans, who placed second to the Singapore Slingers in the recently concluded 2008 Brunei Cup invitational basketball tournament, with 16 and 12 points.

While the Joe Devance trade to Alaska was a shocker, the Washington trade was not totally unexpected, seeing as how Washington was shopped by his former team, the Talk N Text Phone Pals.
Reliable sources said at least Alaska and the Air21 Express turned down overtures for a Washington trade. The Phone Pals wanted Reynel Hugnatan, but the Aces opted to keep their hardworking Ilonggo in the fold. The Phone Pals were, likewise, rebuffed after they sent feelers to Air21 if they would part with Arwind Santos for Washington.
The Phone Pals finally found a taker in the San Miguel Beermen, who parted with the third pick overall in the past draft.
As with the Alaska-Welcoat trade, this swap is also a win-win situation for both teams.
The Beermen get an athletic Fil-Am who is skilled enough to play small forward and power forward and big enough and strong enough to slide to center during emergencies. The Talk N Text Phone Pals, a lethargic franchise which desperately needs a shot in the arm, completes a mini-revamp of its lineup as it gets four quality rookies in Castro, Jared Dillinger, Rob Reyes and Pong Escobal.
