In fairness to Yabut, he had some pretty decent post moves. Too bad he didn't get into a PBA lineup. He would've been a good role player there.

And he can shoot from the perimeter. Too bad he didnt make it to the PBA. I think he is better than canlas or butel or mamaclay..

Red Bull released him to Rain or Shine

Purefoods and Alaska are interested to get the services of Intal while;
SLR and COke are interested to get the services of Espinas
Good for Andaya. JR Reyes will be the PF which i think is his natural position.
I think Intal would flourish under coach Tim. He fits the triangle offense of alaska. He can replace the aging cariaso. Espinas should go to SLR. This would allow Williams to play his natural SF position..

Sotto just signed with the Aces....
How did it happened? Is sotto a free agent? Please give the full details in making a comments/information in the forum.

Hehehe... Sotto being released by Air21 is alright with me... he might be big, but he doesn't play "big" anyway.... :D

Trade offers are good as long as there is a benefit of us getting a useful bigman or two... BUT Arwind being involved in a trade anytime soon is no no!! :D

RayV I was just wonderin' if you are one of the officials in Air21, because when you're talking bout Air21 you usually use the word "us", so are you?:D

I agree. "The Don" Yabut for me is more deserving to play in the PBA, he had championship experience together with Santos, Miranda and Isip during their days. Decent post moves, LONG arms for intimidation("literally it scares me:D), and also had a perimeter game. I wish Alaska Aces should consider their pick with Canlas.

And BTW, is Fredrick Canlas related to Mark Canlas playing for USTe?

STA. LUCIA LEAVES FOR US TRAINING

Giants draftees have to earn spots

Friday, 05 September 2008

Without a major draftee, reigning Philippine Cup champion Sta. Lucia Realty will try to improve through hard training in the US, pitching camp under coach Kevin Barbosa in Boston before going through a different group of trainers in New Hampshire.

The Realtors leave for the US Thursday, dropping by San Francisco first for a four-day holiday as part of their bonus in winning the 2007-08 All-Filipino tourney.

"Pagkatapos ng four-day holiday, bubugbugin na namin sa training. We thought that's the only way para makasabay kami sa mga kalaban na halos lahat nag-improve ang lineup through the Draft," said Sta. Lucia top official Buddy Encarnado, awarded as Executive of the Year by the PBA scribes in their annual awards Tuesday.

The Realtors actually picked two players in Chito Jaime and Kelvin Gregorio in last Sunday's draft exercise at the Market! Market! in Taguig.

"They (Jayme and Gregorio) have to earn their spots because our old reliable relievers are still there. And we're investing on our old players by sending them to training in the US," said coach Boyet Fernandez, also an awardee as Best Coach in the PBAPC bash.

Fernandez and Encarnado said the team will still revolve around senior players Dennis Espino and Marlou Aquino.

“They are still vital cogs to our team and unless we find others who are capable of replacing them, they will continue to play for us,” said Encarnado.

The 35-year-old Aquino’s old contract expired last month and that of Espino, 34, ends Dec. 31. Encarnado bared a new contract has been given Aquino which will end after the season while that of Espino will easily be renewed.

Meanwhile, Talk n Text has also signed up No. 4 pick Rob Reyes to an P8.7-million contract for three years – the same maximum deal gotten by Gabe Norwood, Solomon Mercado and Jared Dillinger.

At Purefoods, team manager Alvin Patrimonio said draftees Beau Belga and Jonathan Fernandez also have to earn their slots.

Patrimonio said James Yap, Kerby Raymundo, Enrico Villanueva, Chico Lanete, Roger Yap, Jondan Salvador and Peter June Simon are the only players assured of slots in the team thus far.

Being considered are free agents Chad Alonzo and Al Vergara. Retiring at the end of the 2007-08 season were Rey Evangelista and Noy Castillo. (NC)

SMB, Alaska get quality big men
By Reuel Vidal

THE next Philippine Basketball Association All-Filipino season opens in a month’s time, but already the San Miguel Beermen and the Alaska Aces were recipients of two franchise-altering big men in Jay Washington and Joe Devance.

Devance was shipped by the Welcoat Dragons to Alaska in exchange for rookie Solomon Mercado and veteran Eddie Laure. Washington was jettisoned by the Phone Pals for Jason Castro, the third overall pick in the past PBA Draft.

The Aces were the obvious winners when they got the versatile Devance, who could play off center Sonny Thoss at the power forward position. But Rain or Shine may also benefit from this trade in terms of cohesion because Mercado, the man they got in exchange, is said to be a close friend of their top draft pick Gabe Norwood.

Devance immediately tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Alaska Aces to a convincing 106-97 decision over the visiting, import-reinforced LG Dios of South Korea at The Arena in San Juan last week.

Willie Miller led all scorers with 24 points; Jeff Cariaso had 13 markers while Thoss bulldozed his way inside for 12 points.

The South Koreans didn’t get too much from their two imports, Ivan Johnson and Brandon Crump.

The surly Johnson, nursing swollen tonsils and refusing to talk to anybody including reporters and team officials, did not even suit up and glowered from the sidelines. Crump was outplayed by Thoss in the first and second quarters before limping out of the court after landing badly in an under-goal scuffle in the third period.

Jeung Ho and Kyu Hun led the Koreans, who placed second to the Singapore Slingers in the recently concluded 2008 Brunei Cup invitational basketball tournament, with 16 and 12 points.

While the Joe Devance trade to Alaska was a shocker, the Washington trade was not totally unexpected, seeing as how Washington was shopped by his former team, the Talk N Text Phone Pals.

Reliable sources said at least Alaska and the Air21 Express turned down overtures for a Washington trade. The Phone Pals wanted Reynel Hugnatan, but the Aces opted to keep their hardworking Ilonggo in the fold. The Phone Pals were, likewise, rebuffed after they sent feelers to Air21 if they would part with Arwind Santos for Washington.

The Phone Pals finally found a taker in the San Miguel Beermen, who parted with the third pick overall in the past draft.

As with the Alaska-Welcoat trade, this swap is also a win-win situation for both teams.

The Beermen get an athletic Fil-Am who is skilled enough to play small forward and power forward and big enough and strong enough to slide to center during emergencies. The Talk N Text Phone Pals, a lethargic franchise which desperately needs a shot in the arm, completes a mini-revamp of its lineup as it gets four quality rookies in Castro, Jared Dillinger, Rob Reyes and Pong Escobal.

Four players beef up Giants roster
By Nelson Beltran, The Philippine Star
September 8, 2008

The Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants are signing up four new players in the next two days before leaving for Qatar then Singapore to play a series of exhibition games against topnotch rivals.

The Giants are enlisting draftees Beau Belga and Jonathan Fernandez, and free agents Chad Alonzo and Aaron Aban to beef up their lineup now down to seven players in James Yap, Kerby Raymundo, Rico Villanueva, Roger Yap, Peter June Simon, Jondan Salvador and Chico Lanete.

Fighting out for the last three slots are Richard Yee, Ardy Larong, Rob Sanz and rookie free agent Al Vergara.

Romel Adducul is recovering from cancer and is trying to get back in shape.

Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio doesn't discount the possibility of trades to fill up the last three slots in the team that finished second behind Sta. Lucia Realty in last Philippine Cup.

"(Beau) Belga is a solid acquisition boosting our frontline. Chad (Alonzo), (Aaron) Aban and (Jonathan) Fernandez, at three spot, are young players but they can compete based on their performance on practice. I certainly have no problem at two-guard with James Yap and June Simon. I'm okay at the point with Roger Yap and Chico (Lanete) but I'm still looking for one and I'm seriously considering Al Vergara," said Gregorio.

Gregorio said they'll see how the mix of Giants works as they play the Qatar and Jordan national teams in Doha then the Singapore Slingers in Singapore.

"These are good pre-season training. We can't go wrong with these trips... all expenses paid which can help fasttrack our effort to build up the team," said Gregorio.

"It's great to be mentioned in the same breath with Ginebra. Maybe, we're getting these invites because of it," Gregorio also said, referring to a recent survey saying Purefoods is now tied with Ginebra as the most popular team in the PBA.

The Giants finished a game short of winning last season's Philippine Cup but struggled and failed to make it past the quarterfinal round in the Fiesta Cup ruled by the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Air21 wooes Jaworski
By Waylon Galvez, Manila Bulletin
September 8, 2008

Air21 coach Bo Perasol took a temporary leave of absence from the team to give the management the liberty to negotiate with former Ginebra coach Robert Jaworski.

A reliable source disclosed that Perasol is currently vacationing in Bacolod City although the Express have started practicing in preparation for the 2008-09 PBA Season that begins next month.

The same source said Perasol gave the Air21 management a free hand to "seriously approach coach Jaworski" to be the team's coach.

"He has not resigned as coach. But while he's away, Air21 now can really pursue (Jaworski). Unlike before when the team tried to get him but at the back of their minds they know they have Bo," the source said.

The same source, who asked not to be named, added that Perasol would join the team this week.

The Bulletin tried to contact Perasol, also a regular employee of the Bert Lina-owned franchise holding a managerial position in one of its branches in the province, but could not be reached. Even the team's board representative, Lito Alvarez, could not be reached for comment.

Meantime, PBA fans get a glimpse of the new-look Rain or Shine team featuring the electrifying Fil-Am pair of Gabe Norwood and Solomon Mercado as the league holds its annual pre-season tournament beginning next week.

The Elasto Painters are among the seven teams seeing action in the off-season event set Sept. 14-28 and to be played in non-traditional playing venue within Metro Manila and Luzon.

Reigning Philippine Cup champion Sta. Lucia, Fiesta Cup runner up Air21 and Talk 'N Text are skipping the two-week tournament owing to the team's previous commitments outside of the country.

But Norwood, the year's top rookie pick, Mercado and the rest of Batch 08 are expected to make up for the three team's absence as they finally get to strut their stuff and get a sample of what PBA brand of play is all about.

The 6-foot-5 Norwood and Mercado, acquired by Rain or Shine in a five-player trade with Alaska Aces including last year's No. 1 pick Joe DeVance a day after the Draft, are the new face of the revitalized Elasto Painters seeking to turn their fortunes around this season.

How the two fancied freshmen fit in to Rain or Shine's nucleus of Jay-R Reyes, Rob Wainwright, Ryan Araña, Jireh Ibanes, Mark Isip, Froilan Baguion and Joey Mente will also be highlighted in the two-group, single round robin eliminations.

Bracketed in Group A with Rain or Shine are Barangay Ginebra, Alaska and Purefoods, while Group B is composed of Coca-Cola, San Miguel and Red Bull.

Devance is always impressive in the pre-season games. Remember last season, when he went out on 30+ scoring sprees in the pre-season tournaments, but wasn't able to consistently do the same in the actual season?
