Its official, it was coach Caloy who informed Sports Radio about the trade and then coach Tim cone confirmed the report through phone interview.

In this trade, i think its alaska's gain because they needed a big man while they are loaded with players in the 2 and 3 position. Welcoat is in need of bigman and they have many players in the 2 and 3 position.

thanks bro, Rain or Shine is now Officially a contender for the upcoming PBA season.:D :D

Well even if we think trading Arwind is a bum decision. It could be due to a business decision. There have been numerous "anamolous" trading that happened in the past which involved under the table dealings.

Remember the Coke-Ginebra trade which made Mamaril, Hatfield and Reavis became part of the barangay. Or the deals involving key players of Red Bull wherein if you ask Coach Yeng, he would only say that it was management decision. Air21 historically traded away Ritualo, Cardona, Pingriss, Yancy, Wesley Gonzales and several others even if they were playing good at the time.

But it does look bad when your player is the MVP Runner-up then you trade him. But as they say ...... walang personalan at trabaho lang. In other words .... Money talks.

even Jay Washington was drafted by Air21 and was later on traded to TNT

Let's wait for the official confirmation from the news, or at Gameface to see if this Air 21 trade involving Arwind Santos is really true or not.

Arwind Santos is a very good player, tall, athletic, and a starter for any team. But the way I see it, he still lacks that leadership quality, or that ability to hit crucial shots when the team needed it. In the first conference of the 2007-2008 PBA season, when Gary David was down, Arwind had the opportunity to try to be the leader for that team. But he wasn't able to do so. He tried to switch to the no. 2 position, but his three-point shot percentages weren't that good.

On the other hand, his natural position in the PBA seems to be no. 3 as he was able to get a lot of rebounds in that conference.

Notice that when Gary David came back into the team and to his 20-point per night scoring ways in the second conference of the 2007-2008, Air 21 ended up as runner up. So I think it is clear that as far as Air 21 is concerned, Gary David is the franchise player, and not Arwind.

I think that if Air 21 can get a good deal for Arwind, then there is no reason why he could not be traded. However, I can't think of anybody that Ginebra can give away for Arwind. There's "The Spark", but he's Ginebra's franchise player, and there's no way Ginebra will trade him away for now. Junthy Valenzuela, maybe? Junthy does seem to have better than Arwind from the three-point area (pending confirmation of stats at www.pba-online.net), but he's not worth an Arwind on a one-on-one trade.

Do wish more teams ..... at least two get added to the PBA. With the influx of new rookies each year. More and more talented but unused players that either rot in the bench or are just signed practice players go to waste.

I know there is a problem on the the high cost of maintaining a team. But seeing veteran players who are still capable to play are most likely would be forced to retire, like that of Kenneth Duremdes and Rodney Santos, is also bad.

Gabby Espinas is a good player but is rotting in the bench. Omanzie Rodriguez a "could have been" does not have a chance to improve himself as he is only a practice player. There are so many other players who are like this.

Some would bite thier lips and just go back to the PBL if they are allowed to play or go to the Liga Pilipinas or other leagues in the country. Worse is that they pack-up thier bags and say thier basketball career is over.

Just feel bad with this scenario happening.

i have to say that these players like espinas and omanzie rodriguez are only good for college hoops not in the pro ranks. there were so many college superstars the flopped in the pro league.

The reason they flopped is because they have no playing time. How can they became better when you don't play them. I agree there are better players in thier teams so that is why they are not played. What I am driving at is that there are more and more players who have the talent but due to the circumstances of just having a few teams in the PBA, they do not develop into the players that they could be.

Look at Baguio, would he blossomed to the player he is today if Miller, Tugade, Fonacier and Valenzuela were still at Red Bull. Now that said stars were traded he had a chance to shine.

To drive my point, Air21 drafted Mark Borboran ..... he is likely to end up as a seatmate of Espinas on the bench. He is not necessarilly a bad player but with Arwind Santos, Nino Canaleta, Ranidel de Ocampo, Homer Se, Doug Kramer, JC Intal and Gabby Espinas playing at the same positions as he
is how can you expect him to show his full potential.

With more teams, more players would have opportunity to show thier talent.

Would Borboran be destined to become as one of the players what you called are only good for college hoops not in the pro ranks.

I just take pity on these players who are really trying thier best but does not have the opportunity because of lack of playing time in the PBA or worse no playing time.

Is there any reports from SMB camp? Looks like there will be trades in the coming days..that team is pretty loaded with wing mans..

Ive heard in the sports radio just this day that Welcoat traded Joe de Vance to Alaska aces in exchange for Eddie Laure and rookie Solomon Mercado. Alaska will also get 2 future 2nd draft picks of Welcoat for 2010 and 2011.

Former no.1 draft pick DeVance traded to Aces
09/01/2008 | 07:16 PM

To get to the contender level, Rain or Shine started making changes in its weakest facet: the backcourt.

The team formerly known as Welcoat, the youngest team in the Philippine Basketball Association, traded away Joe DeVance to Alaska in exchange for rookie two-guard Solomon Mercado a day after the PBA Draft.

Mercado, who was picked fifth by the Aces Sunday, is a burly, six-flat guard whose game has been described as resembling two-time MVP Willie Miller.

Mercado is expected to join playmaker TY Tang in a reunion between the backcourt tandem that led Harbour Centre to two championships in the Philippine Basketball League.

“We think we now have a more balanced roster," said Rain or Shine co-owner Terry Que. “We wish Joe good luck on his new team, but we have to do something about our backcourt."

Big-man DeVance, the no.1 pick last year, will head to an Alaska team that has lacked an inside presence.

“Mercado will be a great player without a doubt," said Cone. “We were lucky he slipped to us. But DeVance fills an immediate need for us at the ‘four’ [power forward] position." – GMANews.TV

how a player performs in practice will influence the coaches decision to play or bench him. more often than not, bench warmers have underperformed in practice.

just because a player like espinas is good in college, it doesn't mean he'll be as effective in the pros. espinas could have been outperformed by canaleta, santos during practices.

That's my point .... Canaleta and Santos are better than Espinas that is why he is benched. But put Gabby in a situation where he has an opportunity to play then he could improve.

How can you expect players to perform at higher level if he does not play.

What I am driving at is that you judge a player as a failure if he was given a chance to play but still he does not perform. But I do think saying a player is bad when he has no opportunity to really play is a bit unfair.

Look at Joseph Yeo, when he was with Coke many tried to write him off as a bust. But what can he do, there was no playing time. But when he was given a chance at Sta. Lucia, now look at his numbers. Paul Artadi has also shown what he can do with adequate playing time with Ginebra, in Purefoods he was considered a bust.

But if we talk about Yancy de Ocampo who was given all the chances to shine in the Pros but still he has failed to deliver ..... now that is a different story.

Anyway everybody is entitled to his own opinion ...... so I now rest my case.
