Panathinaikos 2009-2010

Obradovic decided to exclude Jasikevicius from the A1 roster, instead of Shermadini (Haislip takes the open spot). Saras had injury problems (latest: back injury) almost all the time after returning from his surgery, he also only played the Oldenburg game with painkillers (because DD and Spanoulis were out). He'll get more rest now, until (if?) he's in shape...

Which ethnic group does Perperoglou belong to?

Note: Please make sure to distinguish between nationality on one hand and ethnicity on the other.

Thanks in advance.

He is Greek.

Many Greeks from Asia Minor have the -oglou in their names.

It comes from the Turkish word "oglan" that means child, boy so also many Turkish people carry this ending in the names.

It's like the -poulos ending in many Greek names which means the same so we have Papadopoulos, Diamantopoulos, Vassilopoulos etc, meaning son of Diamantis, Vassilis, or papas(=priest).

Well how do you guys feel about that?
I am aware of Saras' problems and the fact that Pao's backcourt is deep but:
1)Can really Shermadini contribute in the "life & death" matches that they will
play in the top-16?
2)Won't Saras' clutch game be much needed in the aforementioned matches?

I would have to say that this choice worries me...

There was no other choice imo. If Saras can get all those injury problems past him, if he can get back into shape, then he'll be back in the roster even as early as before the cup final, taking Shermadinis place, I'm sure about that.

Atm though Saras was the most logical choice among the foreigners. Logical, since with Batiste and Tsartsaris already two big man with a good inside game are out (ok, Batiste will return soon, but you never know), while Pekovic is playing injured for weeks now (heel problems). Obradovic needs Shermadini to give him (and Batiste) a rest on the 5 in the A1 games to come.

Milenko Tepic is pretty much out of shape (on the offensive end, he plays decent D) as well, but he can't be left out, since Perperoglou has a thumb injury on his shooting hand and the depth on the PG position is much bigger.

Drew Nicholas was injured last week as well, but he's the team only off-the-ball shooter (with that being said he doesn't play off the ball all the time of course), and Haislip just got signed to cover PAOs problems on the 4.

So whom should Obradovic leave out instead of this Saras? There's no chance that a healthy Saras in shape will be excluded from the roster though, Obradovic is not that crazy. So unless Jasikevicius cannot recover at all I'd expect him back in the roster before the end of the season...

As for your two points: Shermadini is not ready for a task like the mentioned one and Saras clutch game might be missed... if he won't play. Don't forget that he's still allowed to play in the Euroleague. This roster move is just about the A1, where PAO needs Shermadini for the moment. My only concern would be that it will be even more difficult now for Saras to find his rhythm (when he's healthy again), with less playtime in official matches. But that remains to be seen, he's a really experienced guy...

I obviously misunderstood ; that's why i've already deleted my post :o
However i would have to agree with you on the rhythm issue.
He has already missed out on a lot of playing time thus failing to keep up
both physically and tactically.

Jesus! How many changes in the roster can a team make in mid-season A1?This is ridiculous.
(you don't have to answer that)

Anyway, appreciate your answer...

I'll answer anyways ;)

It's 3 changes in round 1 (allowed until the day before round 2) and 2 changes in round 2, before the beginning of the POs. So: 5 overall during the entire season.
What's ridiculous about that? That's a pretty normal number in Europe. The german BBL for example allows 4 changes until February 28th.

PAO made 3 changes so far, all in round 1:

Golemac > Jasikevicius
Jasikevicius > Golemac
Haislip > Jasikevicius

So they still have the 2 changes for round 2...

I guess it has been a peculiar season for Pao with the countless injuries and all....

I was thinking more of the "poor relatives" of the A1 when i wrote that anyway. The number of changes of the american players they make, distorts the "face" of their teams as well as that of the league.

Indeed, I haven't witnessed something alike before... but with the "normal" I was referring to the allowed number of changes, rather than PAOs problems. ;)

Yes, in general that's true and I agree. But creating regulations and limits was a good step, scouting is more important now. Can you imagine that for example Olympiada Patras released 10 foreigners during the 07-08 A1 season? But that's a topic for the general A1 thread, not for the PAO one, so I'll stop here...

---------------------------

On topic again:

The EL game vs. Maroussi on thursday should be a crucial one for PAO imo. With a win there (given that Partizan doesn't defeat Barcelona) PAO should have some time to recover, working on the automatisms of the team (as long as there are no new injuries ), which wasn't possible recently with all those players being out of practise. 2 1/2 weeks (from the Maroussi game until the Cup final) is not a lot of time realistically, but better than nothing. And the game in Belgrade is 4 weeks away, counting from thursday...

i'd appreciate if someone was able and had the time to upload our match against olympia larisa!! Conn-X tv is a major problem!!!

He is Greek.

Many Greeks from Asia Minor have the -oglou in their names.

Ionian Greeks (Smyrna/Izmir) have -oglou in their names. Pontian Greeks (Black sea region) have -idis in their names.

I've always wondered whether Diamantidis has Pontian Greek roots.

Decision to replace Sarunas Jasikevicius with "...... .........." [Georgian name here] doesn't look too bright right now, does it?

Shermadini DNP.
Exactly my point.

In tough situations nobody will use a Georgian basketball player in a Euroleague champions game. So why knock Saras out to get him in?

Will he be used against Olympiacos twice this month in Greek Cup/League? Big Sofo will have him for brunch [he is a big guy, he needs brunch too]. NO.

Will he be used in tough Euroleague games? NO.

So in order to justify his decision Obradovic selfishly DNP Sarunas Jasikevicius just out of pure stubborness even in Euroleague games. So he actually lost two players.

And one of them nobody cares of... another brainless Georgian guy out of Caucasian mountains, but to insult the great Sarunas Jasikevicius who has a divine status in European basketball and especially Euroleague is like begging for karma to bite you in the ass.

And please don't give me the usual "talent" speech about the Georgian. He is nothing but scrubs and will end up playing in Italian 2nd division one day.

Poor Shermadini ;) You know who's to blame.

You should read one's post more elaborately before jumping into prompt, erroneous, conclusions.

I criticised the decision. Obviously it was not the Georgian who made the decision to replace Godly Jasikevicius with a Caucausian goat. ;)

There is much talk in the greek press about Pavlos Giannakopoulos' son
visiting the team's dressing rooms after last night's match.
Does anybody know what it was all about?

They say that he entered the locker rooms and was shouting at the players about their performance. I am an OLY fan but for me this move was a disgrace. It was also a bit disgrace prassini's front page. All of a sudden all these players became useless?! shame on son giannakopoulos. If only this team had Radja in the roster...
