PBA season 2008-2009 vol. II

actually mr. danny espiritu said in his interview regarding the draft this year... he said that it will be also beneficial to the league and some free agents because they will be given a chance to knock the doors of the pba teams once more... there are actually good FA who are now playing in the PBL... this will give eman, dela pena, borboran, custodio, kelvin gregorio and otherz to show what they got!!! :)

as majority of them in Player agent par excel lance Danny Espiritu's payroll:D:D:D

Sharma will be a good addition for BK. They'll battle SLR in the quarters, and possibly SMB in the semis. They needed some inside presence there and he can provide some defense and scoring, too. He's also familiar with Yeng's system.

Expand pba to 15-18 teams the talent in RP is so abundant for only 10 teams in a pro league:D:D
15 to 18? why so many? so that some teams will have centers whose height is 6'5 or less? i thought forumers here dont like to see that? you think we have enough players outside the pro league that can go one on one against asi? kerby? (J) Yap?

PBA has rules similar to the NBA so unless you have a talented team, its going to be hard to make a team that will go up versus the current team. i mean if you make a team now who has players outside the PBA will it be competitive against SMB(s) or TnT? maybe you'll say the new teams will get players from the bench of existing teams, that doesnt really work. tell me who red bull and welcoat got from he dispersal draft? i think you want to utilize the bench of current teams but the sad reality is, the big teams will not allow that. and unless the board of governors will fight amongst themselves, they wont just let that happen. its not a good marketing ploy to let some new company beat your basketball team.

pare di naman serious yon alam ko naman yun business aspect ng pba
trans: I am not that serious and really i know the corporate pba will not allow these
But as i want to see our rp team competitive I would like to see players do not go jobless after thier pba career and if possible hire cheap 6'8 above centers from europe us or maybe foreigners from college leagues as I would like to say the talent abundance in phils like KG canaleta struggling nd rich alvarez cannot be find his game that there are many palyers who is not used his full potential is good for 14-16 teams if you compare them to other leagues like cba and kbl but as I say it is not possible unless you entertain the 2 division proposal of the pba board:D:D:D

You're right new teams will have to be contented that their teams could be similar to Barako Bull whose players are mostly bench warmers of other teams or Coke whose players are in their twilight years. But with the new basketball program already in place their could be an abundance of players who are better trained and have international experience. This is beneficial to both the old and new teams in the PBA. Competition might become better and investing in the PBA might really be a good decision. Revenues definitely have to be spread to more teams but I think in the long run more teams in the PBA is healthier. If the PBA becomes greedier they can even pirate the players from the SBP national team because they can offer more jobs by having more teams.

PF lost to RoS... hmmm... ryan g. said that the pink polo shirt was lucky for purefoods....is it lucky?? or it just shows that RG is GAY!!! :D

Aquino faces rap for allegedly mauling fan

MANILA, Philippines - Sta. Lucia’s Marlou Aquino faces sanction from the PBA Commissioner’s Office for his involvement in a mauling incident after the Sta. Lucia-Burger King match at the Araneta Coliseum last Wednesday.

Aquino and five still unidentified men allegedly hit a 24-year-old businessman after the Whoppers whipped the Realtors, 94-81, to force a sudden death in their Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference quarterfinals showdown.

The victim, identified as Gitesa Raju Giduani of No. 9031 Arandia St., San Antonio Village, Makati City, said he was apparently attacked by Aquino and company after he figured in an argument with the player’s daughter.

PBA operations chief Rickie Santos said he himself had seen the incident.

“There were punches being thrown but I didn’t actually see the people involved,” said Santos who was on the other side of the court.

“We got initial reports but the commissioner (Sonny Barrios) wants complete report from the Araneta Coliseum security force before acting on the case,” he added.

The PBA radio panel caught the incident and reported the presence of Aquino in the commotion.

Senior Police Officer 1 Dante Surban of QC Police District Station 7 said the incident happened at around 9:45 p.m. after the Burger King-SLR encounter.

The complainant allegedly commented over how Aquino should have been the one who took the shot in one stretch of the contest.

“Sana si Marlou na lang ang tumira (Marlou should have taken the shot),” he allegedly said and to which the PBA cager’s daughter reacted negatively, triggering a spat.

Surban said Aquino and five others allegedly confronted Giduani after the game and mauled him.

Police Officer 2 Jester dela Cueva has been tasked to handle the investigation of the physical injury in case the victim decides to file charges.

“I will consult my lawyer before pursuing any legal action,” the complainant told police after asking them to put the incident on record.

Aquino is back in top form, being among SLR’s steady performers in the reinforced tourney.

With Kelly Williams out in sickbay, the least the Realtors would want to happen is the loss of another key player.

PBA relaxes eligibility rule on Fil-foreign players
Updated June 05, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The PBA yesterday said it has reduced the minimum number of games required for Fil-foreign players aspiring to join the coming PBA Annual Draft.

The new policy, approved by the league’s Board of Governors and which will take effect this year, allows Filipino players with foreign lineage to apply for the draft if they have played at least 15 games, including exhibition and tune-up matches, in any of the PBA’s accredited leagues.

The previous minimum required for a (Fil-foreign) rookie applicant is 25 games.

In the wake of the recent development, PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said that Fil-foreign players have three more weeks to submit their applications and requirements for the 2009 Draft.

“Considering the tight schedule we are facing with, we have set a June 22 deadline for these players to comply with all the requirements they need to be eligible for the Draft,” Barrios said.

This year’s Draft will be held at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig on Aug. 2.

Among the pertinent documents that has to be submitted by Fil-foreign applicants are certificate of recognition from the Bureau of Immigration, affirmation from the Department of Justice, authenticated birth certificate of Filipino parent, marriage certificate of parents and duly notarized affidavits of three persons residing in the country who could attest to his claim of citizenship.

Barrios said the league will issue the preliminary list of prospective Fil-foreign draftees for submission to all member teams on June 23.

The contestability period regarding the eligibility of foreign-bred players will be from June 24 to July 23.

Among the prospective Fil-foreign players in this year’s Draft include PBL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Chris Ross, Josh Urbiztondo and Chris Timberblake.

He added that local born applicants have until July 24 to hand over their application papers.

^^ probably a knee jerk reaction to SBP's program that binds the players from the dev pool from entering the PBA draft. the kind of thing that will cut the PBA's lifeline from the talented and popular amatuer pool.

I don't think they're doing that against SBP, I think they further looking what happened to Norwood and Williams. They played for several games for the NT and still they are required to play 25 games in the PBL, I think that they are also trying to limit the possibility of an injury to a Fil-Am, lower games means lower chances of getting injured.

Hmmm I wonder why I don't hear Marlou Aquino and his groupies complaining about this new development?

Marlou has a more serious problem to attend to :-) ..which brings me to this question: Why on earth does a 6'9 man need another 5 more guys to beat up just one poor lad?

it's just the 6'9 guy is plain lazy and had others finish the thing he started

This could be a negative news for the Barako Bulls..

Officials at the Centre for Food Safety said a laboratory analysis found tiny amounts of the illegal drug in samples of "Red Bull Cola," "Red Bull Sugar-free" and "Red Bull Energy Drink", a spokesman said.

The drink has now been taken off the shelves of major supermarkets, the spokesman said in a statement issued late Monday. He added that the amount of cocaine found in the drinks posed little health danger.

Red Bull moved quickly to deny the findings and said independent tests on the same batch of drinks had found no traces of cocaine.

The Centre for Food Safety found traces of cocaine between 0.1 and 0.3 micrograms of the illegal drug per litre, the statement said.

Initially, Hong Kong's commissioner for narcotics Sally Wong said the government was taking legal advice on any possible liability for importers and retailers.

However, after meeting Red Bull representatives Tuesday, the government issued a statement saying no prosecution was intended, because of "the absence of prior knowledge of the cocaine content in the product.

"However, should they continue to deal in any products containing dangerous drugs in future, they might be liable to prosecution," the statement said.

Commissioner for Narcotics Sally Wong said some retailers had taken contaminated batches of Red Bull off their shelves and advised those who had not done yet done so to follow suit.

Before Tuesday's meeting, Red Bull's Asia Pacific marketing director, Daniel Beatty, said the firm strongly disputed the findings that cocaine had been found in its product.

"It would have been absolutely impossible for the Hong Kong or any other authorities to have found traces of cocaine in Red Bull Energy Drink," he said in a statement.

The Hong Kong government said tests on further samples of Red Bull Tuesday had not detected any cocaine.

The government had asked Red Bull for more samples "in order to establish whether the existence of traces of cocaine in some samples is a systematic issue or whether it relates to any particular lot or serial number."

Taiwan officials said Saturday they had confiscated nearly 18,000 cases of Red Bull imported from Austria after finding it contained traces of the drug.

Taiwanese authorities ordered the drinks to be removed from shelves pending further investigation.

Red Bull, whose advertising slogan is "Red Bull gives you wings," was founded by Austrian toothpaste salesman Dietrich Mateschitz in the 1980s.

It has since become one of the dominant players in the global energy drinks market.

Aquino gets P20,000 fine for outburst

MANILA, Philippines – PBA commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios said yesterday he believed Marlou Aquino did not physically harm the fan he confronted Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Still, the commissioner fined the Sta. Lucia Realty center P20,000 for his “emotional outburst” that took place shortly after the Realtors lost to the Burger King Whoppers in Game 2 of their Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference quarterfinal series.

Barrios met with Aquino yesterday afternoon to hear his side on the incident wherein a fan was reportedly hurt.

Aquino was accompanied by team manager Ariel Magno.

“From my end, I have concluded there was no physical contact from Marlou. But with his confrontation a melee broke out wherein a fan received blows from Sta. Lucia supporters,” said Barrios.

The commissioner also told Aquino to keep his emotions in check even in the most trying of times, especially in relation to acts against paying fans – the lifeblood of the league.

At the same time, Barrios also issued a plea to PBA fans to avoid making unsavory remarks to players and game officials, whose family could be around watching the games.

BK's Santos leads Best Player race
Saturday, June 06, 2009 5:07:00 AM | 2 Comments

Arwind Santos, the Burger King star forward who's currently with the Powerade Team Pilipinas in Medan, Indonesia for the SEABA championship, leads the statistical points race of the Best Player of the Conference derby through the wildcard round of the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference.

Santos, runner-up to Kelly Williams in the Rookie of the Year derby in 2007 and in the MVP race the following season, emerges as a top candidate for the BPC plum with a league-leading average of 33.5 statistical points (SPs) per game.

The versatile 6-foot-4 foward out of Far Eastern U also leads all local players in scoring with 18.3 points a game on top of other averages of 7.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.7 steal.

Making up the next five are Talk n Text's Jimmy Alapag (29.9), San Miguel's Jonas Villanueva (29.1), Purefoods' James Yap (26.9), BK's Gary David (26.4) and Rain or Shine's Gabe Norwood (26.0).

The top five contender s after the semifinal round contest the coveted crown in a balloting among the players themselves and members of the media who regularly cover the games.

Santos has yet to win the award although he's always been a contender since joining the league two years ago.

He could well get an extra boost in his bid this time should they hurdle the Sta. Lucia Realtors in their knockout game for a slot in the Final Four on June 14.

Santos and his teammates narrowly missed a playoff crack at an outright semifinal seat with an inferior quotient compared to those of the Ginebra Kings and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. The three teams finished the classification round with identical 8-6 win-loss records.

Meanwhile, Sta. Lucia's Anthony Johnson is way ahead of the field in the Best Import race.

Johnson leads with 53 SPs a game. His closest rival is Rashad Bell (48.0) whose Talk 'N Text team failed to make it past the wildcard round.

For leading San Miguel to an outright semis entry, Gabe Freeman could have been a top contender for the award. The question is whether he's still going to be reactivated by the team from the injured list.

For the record, Johnson and BK's Shawn Daniels are the only imports who have been with their teams from the start of the tourney up to present. Manila Bulletin
