I hope they do adopt a regional format too..
but it's scary that the probability of dying a natural death may occur?
the idea of bringing teams from island to island would need a lot of sponsorship from the transportation sector in order to lessen the travel expenses. I remember the MBA even tried to dole out stocks of companies to their players until they reach into other measures to maintain the the players, the teams, and soon the league itself..which eventually folded up. :(
economics would be the major concern and the downside for that format.
but on the better side, the southern part of the Philippines would benefit, since PBA was really a Manila-based league. and the fans would have a more solid attachment to a team if it represents a certain homebase.
good luck to the changes of the PBA.
I hope the regional format would be feasible.

that's actually the problem of being an archipelago. it's a logistical nightmare and costs would surely skyrocket if we play the home and away format.

the pocket tournament format is actually effective in reducing costs.

Burger King, Coca-Cola work out last-minute trade deal

A day before the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Annual Rookie Draft, Burger King and Coca-Cola was busy hammering out a last-minute trade deal.

The Tigers worked their way to snare the No.3 pick, beating the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants to the draw, in a deal with the Whopper.

Coca-Cola is expected to use that third pick to draft Fil-Am guard Chris Ross, who caught the Tigers’ coaching staff.

Burger King board representative and incoming board chairman Lito Alvarez confirmed to GMANews.TV that the possible trade involving his team and Coca-Cola depends on Purefoods’ move during Sunday’s draft.

Burger King picks first and is expected to tab Japeth Aguilar as the No.1 overall rookie choice.

Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo said, in a telephone interview, that the Giants’ management and coaching staff’s consensus is to select 6-foot-7 forward Rico Maierhofer, who was a key figure in the championship drives of La Salle and Harbour Centre in the UAAP and PBL, respectively.

This means that it is already a done deal with Ross going to Coca-Cola in exchange for the Tigers’ first round pick next year.

“It still depends on what Purefoods will pick. If they go for Maierhofer, then Ross will go to Coca-Cola," said Alvarez. “But if Purefoods selects Ross, then Maierhofer stays with us and the deal with Coke is off."

Coca-Cola assistant coach Bo Perasol believes chances of getting Ross remains 50-50.

“Anything can still happen in the draft, but we are really serious in getting Ross, who showed his versatility playing both guard positions during the Rookie Camp," said Perasol. “We need somebody of Ross’ caliber."

With early negotiations with Burger King for the rights on the No.3 pick falling apart, Purefoods shifted back its attention on Alaska in hope of wooing two-time most valuable player Willie Miller on its fold.

Purefoods board governor said that the deal with Alaska remains hanging. The Giants are offering Enrico Villanueva and a future pick for Miller.

“The deal is still on the table," said Pardo. “We’re just waiting for Alaska’s response."

Alaska board governor and current PBA chairman Joaqui Trillo and multi-titled coach Tim Cone had earlier expressed their intentions to keep the services of the national team standout.

But Purefoods remains persistent. – GMANews.TV

it was a practical thing on the part of Japeth.. :)
he has more lucrative offers in the PBA, the fact that he's injury-prone (during his brief WKU stint), it is better for him "to strike while the iron is hot" in the Philippine basketball scene. I do wish+hope+and pray that somewhere along the way, Japeth as well as the people concerned (the people around him) will find a way for him to be part of future NT's like Gilas.
Japeth deserves the best of both worlds, PBA and Gilas.

I was really expecting a lot of unsolicited comments from some sectors towards the personal decision of Japeth Aguilar to join the PBA. It is very unfortunate that these individuals could think only of their personal preference without due consideration to the personal choice of the guy. Everyone knows that financial security is the biggest factor that influence us in our decisions, so Japeth's decision is most probably influenced by this factor. We should know that a basketball career is only for a limited period of time, so a player has to take advantage of this opportunity as soon as he is given the chance. A year or two wasted on other things would mean a lot of money lost or wasted. So it is understandable that Japeth decided to join the PBA now because he knows he will be getting more from it as compared to what he will get if he will just play for the national team. To some people this may appear unpatriotic, but for me he just followed his personal priority.

but then Japeth had he signed for SMART-GILAS would receive an allowance equal to what he'll get as a rookie in the PBA. To me it was a just poor judgement or he was just advised purely wrong.

For me,i think he was just advised purely wrong. If you go to smart Gilas you will receive an allowance equal to a rookie in the PBA,(im sure marami paring maghahabol na PBA teams sa kanya after Smart Gilas) and to think of it, he will surely improve his basketball skills under coach toroman and the most important of all is NBA scouts. As i notice many NBA Scouts are watching in all FIBA sanction games like FIBA Europe,Asia,Americas and etc.. So sayang talaga.:(.But we have to respect Japeths decission also..;)

i'd like to see that Gilas contract though. Remember, Aguilar playing for the PBA means you are working for a corporation. Perks and all.

Until now i am at a loss what kind of contracts Tiu, Casio and others have received. Does it protect them from injuries? (i know PBA teams has this certain protection for their players, where they are still getting paid by the teams even if you get injured. Correct me if i am wrong. But the latest on this particular issue is Eugene Tejada's case.

Regarding the perks, there are bonuses paid for certain player which might even equal the amount of contract itself--- that is if your team/company can get that.

Again, i'd like to see a Gilas contract. If this was all for the flag, i'd take this as a no-brainer but then again they are getting paid (and they deserve it, don't get me wrong.)
