Realtors can only hope Kelly could recover
BY NOLI CORTEZ
MONDAY |JUNE 08, 2009

CHRISTMAS is still a long way off, but Sta. Lucia Realty coach Boyet Fernandez has already drawn up his wish list.

Foremost, of course, is that Kelly Williams recover from his illness sooner than expected and the do-it-all forward return to action in time for the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference semifinals, if ever the Realtors get there.

"We really need him," said Fernandez. "He is a very vital cog in this team and with him our chances can only get better."

That supposition lies mainly on how quick Williams recuperates from the rare blood disorder that has sidelined him since the All-Star break. Prior to that, he has been averaging 13.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

Fernandez related that Williams is doing well, but still far from full recovery.

"His status is still questionable. Wala pa ring clearance mula sa doctor, " the coach said.

"We’re still hoping he (Williams) can play in the semis," added Fernandez, only partly in jest.

The ailment has kept Williams out of the Powerade Team Pilipinas currently seeing action in the SEABA men’s tilt in Medan, Indonesia, and also out of Sta. Lucia’s last eight games in the Fiesta.

Even without him, the Realtors have still managed to advance into a best-of-three quarterfinals duel with Burger King, a series that will be decided on Sunday after the Whoppers fashioned a 94-81 win last Wednesday.

The winner of that series proceeds to the best-of-seven semifinals against early qualifier San Miguel Beer.

Williams’ value could be gleaned from the way he has piled up enough statistical points that made him a leading contender for the season’s Most Valuable Player award, giving him a shot at becoming only the fourth PBA player ever to win the MVP honors in two successive seasons.

Should he get it, Williams will join Bogs Adornado (1975-76), Alvin Patrimonio (1993-94) and Danny Ildefonso (2000-01) in an elite cast.

Coach Boyet Fernandez will not have the luxury of using Ryan Reyes and MVP Kelly Williams hence both are currently injured as SLR will be having their WIN-OR-GO HOME series with BK this coming sunday. reyes(hamstring) williams (blood disorder)

Hope that Santa will grant his wishes right away.

Since we're at this ..... where can you buy Barako Bull? I've been looking at groceries and stores but could not find said brand.

SM Hypermart Pasig, but there just a few bottles with a cheap packaging. Err.

SM Hypermart Pasig, but there just a few bottles with a cheap packaging. Err.

convenience stores like 7-11 have them. about the cheap packaging your right but the Chuas made it clear that Barako Bull was made for the lower class consumers who prefer cheaper energy drinks as opposed to costly ones like Red Bull.

The Whoopers sure have a great advantage over the Realtors. For sentimental reasons, i would like to see Johnson score 40points and lead the Realtors to victory but SLR without Williams and Reyes would be easy prey in a 7-game series against any team, moreso with SMB. If the Whoopers limit Johnson to below 40 and make sure Yeo does not become a factor in offense and the Whoopers will have this one in the bag as early as the 3rd quarter. Failure to do so would give the Realtors the chance to steal the win in the 4th.

Purefoods and RoS?Both are dangerous fort my KIngs but Purefoods has stronger fan base and rode high in motivation, that's make them more dangerous to any team. so i will pray for an RoS victory :D.

purefoods have a gay coach...

I remember in one interview, Rod Nealy said, there is someone touched and squeezed his bum when he's playing against Purefoods. That might be.... Ryan Gregorio?

Really?:eek::eek::eek::eek:

purefoods have a gay coach...

maybe true.. i'm a big purefoods fan since Patrimonio's days..

ANyway. as far as i can see, He s always hugging James Yap, (at to the extent kissing him) PJ Simon, and I think Roger Yap.. and as we all see, look at the line up of purefoods? heck he even signed jenkins mesina because he looks like the golden boy..

ryan always hug his players... and most of purefoods players are "gwapo"... they traded their "panget" players or dont use them in the game... he traded paul artadi to give his BF roger yap more playing time... PF was able to get topex and celino but RG dont give them good playing time... IMO, celino and topex is better than roger yap... but well lets face it... roger yap looks good than topex and celino... :D

the gay coach lost his bid for pba crown... he needs to join bb pilipinas to get a crown... :D

MANILA, Philippines - Bracing for a shootout, Burger King instead scored a ghastly rout as it overwhelmed a depleted Sta. Lucia Realty side, 120-72, to arrange a semifinal showdown with top seed San Miguel Beer in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

All the Whoppers needed was one big scoring spurt in the first quarter. Gary David sparked the run by scoring the game’s first seven points en route to a 16-point bulge which they preserved the rest of the way.

David fired three triples for a team-high 19 points while Arwind Santos backed him up with 15 and reserves Cholo Villanueva, Aaron Aban and Carlo Sharma chipped in 12 points apiece as Burger King sealed a best-of-seven showdown with the Beermen starting Wednesday.

“The key is we have a good start, our starters had a good job of setting the tone, the guys coming off the bench then picked it up from there,” said BK coach Yeng Guiao, who steered the RP team to a sweep of the SEABA crown in Medan, Indonesia last week when they beat the opposition with an average margin of 38 points.

“My coaching staff did a good job keeping the guys sharp while I’m away,” Guiao said, referring to assistants Junel Baculi and Johnny Tam, who took over in his absence.

The 48-point romp also set a number of firsts for the winning franchise, the losing side and the league.

The winning margin was the biggest for the Bert Lina-owned club since routing Barangay Ginebra, 124-90, in last year’s Game Two of the Fiesta Conference finals.

It also dealt Sta. Lucia its worst loss since the Realtors absorbed a 79-114 beating at the hands of Red Bull, Guiao’s former team, in the same conference two years ago.

It was also the most lopsided game since Alaska Milk smothered Tanduay, 119-71, in the battle for third in the 2000 Commissioner’s Cup.

The Realtors sorely missed the services of reigning MVP Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes.

Williams has been out for more than a month now with a rare blood disorder while Reyes sat out his first PBA game since he suffered a hamstring injury in Medan.

“Ryan Reyes and Kelly Williams weren’t able to play, that’s our biggest break,” said Guiao. “It would have been different if Kelly and Ryan played.”

It will be Guiao’s eighth appearance in the last nine semifinals as a coach, missing only when Red Bull, now Barako Bull, failed to make the grade last year.

“It’s a welcome event that I’m able to go back to the semis after missing it the last conference,” said Guiao.

It looks like that it will be a good semifinal match up. SMB will have a hard time beating BK if they will not play their original import.

Beermen, Kings wary of long lull

MANILA, Philippines – Coaches of San Miguel Beer and Barangay Ginebra are concerned over their respective charges competitive form after enjoying a long break as a result of automatic seeding in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Cup Final Four.

San Miguel takes on Burger King while Ginebra tangles with Rain or Shine in separate best-of-seven semifinal showdowns starting with Game One tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.

“I’m sure we’re in shape. The question is whether we’re in game-condition. The boys might have been a bit rusty,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico. “And if the guys do become rusty, hopefully we’re able to shake it off right in the first half. Game One is important in a series.”

San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen said they’re well aware of going through a long layoff that’s why they have been exerting efforts to keep their competitive form.

“Actually, I don’t want to think about that. That’s the format, that’s the situation we’re in, and we just did everything to be ready for our comeback. I believe we have covered everything that needed to be covered,” said Tanquingcen.

Chandler 'a brat' -- Ryan
Tuesday, June 16, 2009 3:59:00 AM

The decision to bench Purefoods import Marquin Chandler in the second half of the Giants' do-or-die Game 3 against Rain or Shine was management decision.

This was revealed by Giants coach Ryan Gregorio, who claimed that the import was "acting like a brat."

"He was complaining too much about the refs, fighting with opposing players," Gregorio added.

With Chandler on the bench in the second half, the Giants almost pulled it off, bowing only after crucial free throw misses late in the game by James Yap and Kerby Raymundo.

The Elasto Painters escaped with a 93-89 victory for the fourth semifinals seat.

Purefoods board representative said in a text massage that the decision to bench the 6-foot-5 Chandler "was management's prerogative."

Gregorio admitted that he actually had a hard time deciding whether to play or not to play Chandler in Game 3 after his late game heroics in Game 2 where he nailed two pressure-packed free throws in an 84-82 win that forced sudden-death.

There was also an option to change import but Gregorio was hesitant that a new guy would not fit in right away.

"After seeing him play in the first couple of minutes in the first half, I told myself 'here we go again.' Marquin was causing lots of troubles for the team. Then Mr. Pardo approached me. It was a collective decision," Gregorio added.

Aside from his poor shooting performance in the first half, Chandler had three turnovers, three fouls and two technical fouls -- for delaying the game and a Flagrant Foul Penalty 1.

Purefoods actually waited for Chandler's availability following his impressive stint in Korea.

He finally came in as the team's fourth import after Reggie Larry, Brain Hamilton and Jahmar Thorpe. Waylon Galvez - Manila Bulletin

^ i must say that's a gutsy decision by the Purefoods management (and coaching staff) not to play Chandler in such a crucial game. And since they were competitive anyway during that stretch i say it's a good decision. i remember watching live around 2 years ago when they had Darius Rice as an import... Gregorio pulled him out in the fourth quarter because the import was not playing well... Purefoods was trailing by 12 or so, the locals make a comeback, steals the game and i saw Gregorio pull Rice to his side and screams at him: that's what you call heart, that's what your teammates look like... All the while Rice having this sheepish smile.

My bad then :)

As for the semis match-up... i hate the Burger King pairing with SMB (my team), i just feel that Yeng Guiao knows how to beat the Beermen for years now...

Rested Kings, Beermen open Final 4 drive

spo1.jpg

MANILA, Philippines - The Final Four of the Motolite PBA Fiesta Cup gets going today at the Araneta Coliseum with a pair of best-of-seven matches pitting two of the league’s most popular teams that had the luxury of a long rest against virtual underdogs that had to take the hard route to get into the semis.

San Miguel Beer, which topped the classification phase in impressive fashion but had not seen action the last four weeks, finally plunges into the battle against Burger Machine, which is coming off a rousing 120-72 victory over Sta. Lucia Realty in their sudden death for the third semis berth last Sunday.

Gametime is at 5 p.m.

Barangay Ginebra, which made a big surge after a sputtering start to clinch the other outright semis seat, also tries to shrug off the ill effects of a long layoff against a fired-up Rain or Shine squad that outfoxed a fancied Purefoods side, 93-89, in the other rubber match, also last Sunday.

“We know we are the overwhelming underdogs. But that’s the way we like it. These guys have already over-achieved but I believe we’re not done yet. We’ll bring this as far as we can,” said BK coach Yeng Guiao.

SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen knows fully well of the pressure on the Beermen to show their competitive fire, stressing they need to re-display the form they showed in the elims to stay on track of their title drive.

“We have to come out with our A-game. Otherwise, we would be in trouble. We saw Sunday that Burger King is in top condition. They played like a well-oiled machine against Sta.Lucia,” said Tanquingcen.

During the long break, San Miguel and Ginebra had only one tune-up match against each other which the Beermen won.

“We had beaten Rain or Shine twice in the classification round but the semis is an entirely different game because this is now the playoffs,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico. “They have the advantage in the opener since they’re enjoying momentum coming from a win Sunday.”

But Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia said Ginebra is a tough team to beat although he remains upbeat of his wards’ chances against the crowd favorites in their 7:30 p.m. duel.

“Ginebra has the size and quickness that they can get lots of mismatches which make them a tough team to beat. But we are optimistic that if we don’t get too excited and be mentally focused, we have a chance,” said Garcia.

PBA experts and watchers, however, point to San Miguel and Ginebra as the overwhelming favorites in terms of manpower and perhaps crowd support.
