with only one week remaining, my prediction is between 3rd-5th place finish for gilas. 3rd being the highest and 5th, lowest... my barometer for the success of gilas is 5th place. if they finished 5th, (though it will be a disappointment) i'll give the team a passing mark (pasang awa) given the competition... if they finished higher than fifth, i consider it an accomplishment already, but if they finished lower than 5th, i consider it a big failure...

if i will based it on groupings, each team's lineups, strengths and recent performances, this is my overall prediction. (but definitely hoping for a higher place for our team)

1-iran
2-china
3-korea
4-jordan
5-phi
6-japan
7-qatar
8-lebanon
9-taiwan
10-syria
11-india
12-uae
13-indonesia
14-malaysia
15-uzbekistan
16-bahrain

the way i see it, our team's chances will depend on (1)how the pba players will jell well with the team, (2)how the old gilas members would react with the new pba players and (3)how toroman will use the pba players efficiently. is toroman going to allow alapag at certain times to play his usual game of dominating the game with his play-making skills and offensive skills? and will toroman use kelly and ranidel at number 3 at certain occasions? this is very crucial...teams like jordan, korea and iran knows how to beat us... they beat us inside with points and rebounds. frankly, i don't see us beating these kind of teams with a lineup of 3 players below 6'3 playing altogether... we need to out-muscle them and get those boards (they always beat us in boards)

vs china and iran - 20-80 chance
vs korea, jordan - 40-60
vs qatar - 50-50
vs japan 55-45

goodluck to our team!

btw, i was looking at the schedule of aktv, it looks like all the games in aktv won't be shown live (mostly 1 hour delayed telecast) and this is bad for those who don't have btv channel...what a bummer...hope they do something about it...

Ugh. This is not good.

Does NSG have BTV? Mahirap yan if they only have AKTV. Plus my cable at home is Destiny. Bummer.

Nakakahiya naman yun, NSG walang BTV :D (But yeah, i'll still ask when i make the reservations :) )

I watched China play last nite against Iceland in a tune up game. I was not impressed at all. They won by 14 but did not look good. Granted Wang Zhi Zhi did not play a lot but still they were playing Iceland. The big center who plays in the NBA for Washington, Yi Jianlan, looks very limited offensively. I only saw him score on dunks. No post moves or face up jump shots. He is a big presence defensively however. Iceland missed an incredible amount of shots near the rim when he was nearby. All in all though, I think the Philippines have a more than decent chance of upsetting China.

the quality of the smallest players determine outcomes

the quality of the smallest players determine outcomes

whether you would want to agree or not, particularly if you're fanatics of tiny players the outcomes will likely be determined by the quality of play of the Gilas small players.

In the NBA, the guards standing 6'3" and above typically average 3-5 more rebounds per game than those standing below six feet. This means that in a regular game, you can expect lost rebounds of as many as ten rebounds per game with two short guards. While theoretically this should not be fatal, the reality is that in expectedly close games, where skills and quickness are just about equal, the team with the more possessions from rebounds will win. You may also note that Smart Gilas has almost always been outrebounded by higher ranked national teams.

If the short guards, and there are four of them, can substantially contribute to rebounds and don't produce turnovers like crazy, the Philippine team has more than an equal chance of winning. That is, if the shorties together get twelve to twenty rebounds per game, winning easily becomes a true possibility. There's no point in having point guards and shooting guards when you possess the ball less than 40 percent of the time. I don't even see China or Iran beating the Philippines if the rebounds and turnovers are equal.

See, we're now sharing play secrets with other national teams so they will know how to handle the favorite teams with five or more players standing at least two meters.

Chinese-style referee powered national teams

Chinese-style referee powered national teams

It is also extremely important to have a lead of at least 10 points over China in the closing minutes. The Chinese, whether Taiwanese or Mainlanders, are known in Asia to corner mysteriously all important FIBA tournaments and to include referees in their national team to help ensure favorable results.

In Tianjin for instance, Fahed of Lebanon was given a three-point shooting foul in the crucial closing seconds for what slow motion video clearly show was an absence of contact. This will happen again and again. Do not expect that the Chinese are sponsoring an Olympic eliminator through the goodness of their heart.

Any national team must pour it on the Chinese or the referees will send China to London for free. It is unlikely that the Mainlanders will be an improvement over the Taiwanese in refereeing quality.

Being 5000 percent sure about Ballesteros over Barroca

Being 5000 percent sure about Ballesteros over Barroca

Ballesteros it must be over Barroca.

In the entire history of Smart Gilas, as well as earlier national teams, opposing coaches have enjoyed toying with Philippine short guards by playing physically powerful players in the mold of Jordan's Wright and Qatar's Leslie, or the exceptionally tall Chinese guards to dominate the guard positions.

Unlike previous teams, the Philippines can now shut down the eternally abusive practice of opposing coaches by shifting down quick and powerful Kelly and Ranidel to take on the tall, strong and highly skilled FIBA-class guards too. This will require however that Ballesteros be injected regularly to prevent the forward line from being outrebounded heavily in the switch downs. He can also replace Baracael who has pitiful defense or quickness; but Marnel can make shots that Barroca cannot during high pressure situations. The assassin's bullet that should have stopped Marnel may have saved him for Wuhan.

The Philippine team happens to be already the shortest team among the dangerous teams in Wuhan.

Sadly, Barroca can never be that good in FIBA-class mortal combats. He is a fine player and would certainly contribute much to a PBA team fighting only other very short ASEAN-grade teams. He is no Medusa who can fatally scare opposing guards however, and that was very plain to see in all those Smart Gilas years. Like the other Philippine guards, he also does not have wondrous three-point shooting of a Caidic to rely on during crunch time.

Barroca's fans would want him in the national team for the "angas" factor. But angas is good enough only for an ungas. If it is not accompanied by credible and reliable defense and shooting contributions like those of Ranidel and Kelly, it is just the emasculated defiance and stubbornness shown by a wild pig about to be peppered with a dozen elephant gun bullets.

With Jason in, and switchdown of the powerful PBA players to the guard positions occasionally, real competitiveness with greatly reduced size and power mismatches is now possible in Wuhan. This way, Toro can also introduce some wicked surprises to opposing bench tacticians as they have never seen him do this in games that matter.

Smart Gilas no longer have any tune up games in schedule. They will be leaving for China on the 13th and by the time they set foot there, I don't think they will still play any tune up games.

As for the final line up, I'd still have Barroca over Ballesteros for the main reason is a 3 point guard rotation is better to have and should be equipped knowing that our Big man rotation is sealed.

daydreaming yet again..the RP team that could have been

daydreaming yet again..the RP team that could have been

given enough time and support by other PBA teams,we could have injected more experienced players in the lineup(this would be a matter of debate but forgive me this time). It's too late for changes..too late for crying over spilled milk but I just want to share this for fun.

Baracael's spot could have easily been given to Arwind Santos. Both guys are 6'4 and both coming from the same school but Santos can shoot, defend and move a notch higher than Baracael.Santos is 30 years old now but his athleticism is better than the younger Baracael.

Ryan Reyes (6'2) for Chris Tiu (5'11)- Chris Tiu could have taken the spot of his brother in the coaching staff(sorry Charles) and a taller Ryan Reyes would have taken Chris spot in the SG/PG position. It won't take away Chris' basketball smarts and shooting at the same time we can inject a taller point guard in the lineup. While Toro's endless love for the guy is uncanny,I still think this would have been a better choice all along.

Jason Castro (5'9) over Mark Barroca (5'7)-talent over talent. Both guys have the offensive arsenal to show off but Castro could have easily beaten Barroca in this spot. While Fadi praises Barroca and Alapag,I think the guy would have tears in his eyes seeing Jason Castro's game. Castro (right now) has the range that he does not have a year/2 years ago.But we also know that he has a knee injury right now but I think the guy could recover come the Wuhan wars.

Jay Washington (6'8) over Jason Ballesteros (6'8) anytime-not to discount the Gilas boys' dedication and love for the national team (though some of them hardly get any minutes). And I know most if not all of them will be impact players in the PBA some time in the near future.Ballesteros' spot could have easily taken away by Washington who is at his prime at the moment.I know adding him(with Kelly and Ranidel) up would be redundant but he'll be an upgrade in the power forward and even in the center position.Given enough time to jell with the rest of the pack and a clean bill of health we would have a more formidable front court.

lineup would look like this:

centers: Douthit,Taulava,Washington (PF/C)
power forwards: Williams,Aguilar
small forwards: Arwind Santos (SF/SG),De Ocampo (PF/SF)
shooting guards: Chris Lutz, Marcio Lassiter
point guards: Castro, Alapag, Reyes

this lineup could have won the Asian games gold even without Douthit on the lineup.

Asian scouts knew better they would not divulge in simple reverse psychology only the weak ones (qatari's?:D:eek:)

@alex

arwind win an MVP because he plays on his natural position as a PowerForward... but when you let him play as a SF i dont think he will be effective

i don't think it'll be logical for him to play power forward in Fiba-Asia either. With his new and improved 3 point shooting,I think he can make a cut as a small forward or even shooting guard at times.Norwood could be an option too but we all know his 3 point shooting isn't as consistent as the others.Anyways, I hope the current lineup will end up 3rd at least.

This team is at least as good as the previous one. And that's the main issue. Having the same grade is not enough because all other Asian nations are trying to improve their national teams.

It is already as good as a fact that even today, China will not win the Wuhan championship if it will be held in nations such as South Korea, Japan, Iran and even the Philippines. Without Yao, this team hardly looks impressive.

Better yet, there are small players again. If the team fails in its mission because the players too small for their position cannot get the rebounds and shoot threes over their much taller opponents, reality and common sense will really be a major part of team selection. Check NBA and FIBA stats, and see that small players never, ever rebound and score as a group better than taller players in the same spot. Again, it is already well known that, without the TnT forwards, the chance of this team winning are slim.

There will be changes surely in the future. The smallest players tend to be the most sipsip players and coaches/owners pets, as they probably know already that they are always prime candidates for being booted out in a major basketball team. Enough smart people will see that there are more than enough properly sized, athletic and skilled players to win it all in FIBA even with just the current PBA, Smart and Sinag candidates.

It is almost tournament time so we all just have to support this national team because it certainly will not allow itself to be embarrassed by the favorites despite giving away 3 to 7 inches in average team height. I still believe that they can win the top prize.

time and time again i will state what coach jong uichico has said always.. (in tagalog)

"kahit na anong gawin natin para palakihin and national team, we are always in a height disadvantage.."

trans: "even if we field in the tallest possible lineup, we will still be at a disadvantage"

a prime example could be dylan ababou.. he is used as a forward, sometimes power forward at UST.. in the national team he is a small forward or shooting guard.. honestly speaking he looks lost in Gilas.. it's because there is a different role for each player in the team..

in the Philippines, except for the center position, ALL players must play a position a notch below what they are used if we want a taller national team.. it is already a disadvantage to make them play outside of their comfort zone, it is doubly a disadvantage that it STILL doesn't match up well in the Asian scene..

I don't agree..if Uichico is not a coach and is a scientist then maybe he'll be more credible.I think the pinoy kids are getting bigger each generation and 6 foot five kids are just a norm this days.Compare it maybe last 15-20 years, almost all college teams has a 6'5 and above player. My point is,we could always find a player tall enough to be our center, the question is the talent level.Giants from the past like Bonel,Marlou and EJ hardly has the mobility to go up and down the court but of course guys like Slaughter and Fajardo has still room for improvement compared to the top Giants in Asia.

Of course the players needs to adjust playing another role is a must but this is not exclussively happening in the Philippines.Magic used to play center till he became the best point guard of all time. Argentina might have a slight height disadvantage, but 2-3 inches of height disparity is not an issue if you have the skills. The PBA players could have lessen the national team's height disadvantage in fact the powerade team wasn't that small compared to the other teams..the problem they had before was their lack of preparation.

the first strong team that gilas will face in fiba-asia is china. The results of our game against china will give us a better idea of how far we will go in this 2011 edition of fiba-asia.
