it seemed that there is a pattern in every tourney that gilas participated in:

start of tournament:
- start strong and beat contenders and also-runs convincingly

mid tournament:
- lose a couple of close games but still qualify for the elimination rounds

end of tournament:
- win a big game only to lose in the next round citing fatigue / injury / referee bias / height advantage / food poisoning / bad connection / no WIFI / syphillis / simona halep's breast reduction surgery

then back home, they'll call it moral victory, and people will heap praises for their courage and nationalism. the quote "PARA SA BAYAN" will be overused once again.

Maybe in this coming Wuhan tourney, the Gilas boys will break the pattern and have their FIRST trophy to hoist since their formation.

i just had an epiphany - our boys will lose in the FINALS

^^ super super OT...

Lovejones, there was also a time that i compiled and give mixtapes to girls i admired. one girl in particular was into those karaoke love song sh!ts, but i want to take and cross her over to the dark side, so i gave her a good collection of CBGB / NYC wunderground vibes. when i came over to check up on her one day, i was surprised she was singing to the songs i gave her....

fast forward to a couple of months, i got under her pants. those mixtapes are magic!

oh absolutely! music is the food of love!

One thing I notice about this team is that never played with its best front line. Meaning a naturalized player (Douthit, Giles, Sampson) and a capable PF, who can play both ends of the court.

In all of the previous tournaments that it joined its either one is missing or both. In Doha, we had Douthit, but without a PF (williams or deocampo). Then in the Asian Games Williams played but was partnered with our backup center (Taulava, Slaughter). In 2010 Doha Invitationals and 2010 PBA conference, it played without both..

While we have seen probably its best backcourt combination whether Hontiveros/Casio, Tiu/Casio, Barroca/Lutz in its full potential, we have yet to see these team perform with its backcourt and best frontcourt combination playing at the same time.

I know its only one position, but it changes the dynamic of their game when you have Williams/Douthit or Douthit/DeOcampo playing at the same time.

Because the problem is that when Baracael or Aguilar plays the game from one of the court suffers whether defense or offense ..If Baracael plays our defense suffers, or if Aguilar plays, our offense suffers...

Easy to explain. A smaller team has to expend more energy to stop a bigger team, has to run more steps than a bigger team to outran their taller players, etc. as the tournament progresses, they will be fatigued more than a bigger team , and will make them more susceptible to injuries. ideal solution for this are naturalized player(which we got) and reinforcements(which we got)

What will make the above even worse is if the smaller team has a shallow lineup, meaning, if only the first 5 or 7 players can compete with high-level teams then when you field the bench players, the level goes down. Again, the ideal solution for this are naturalized player(which we got) and reinforcements(which we got)

So I expect Gilas to play better in this Fiba-Asia compared to the Asiad 2010, although, hard to predict since the other teams inserted good players or reinforcements as well who were not in the Asiad 2010 (tama ba?? not sure about my memory)

the critical factor for Gilas is how well the reinforcements blend in and the mental attitude of the Gilas players who are now PBA draftees(they might not play strong to avoid injuries)

A 5th to 8th place is realistic. But 4th and higher is almost impossible... You have to go through Jordan (For 4 years, Philippines can't beat them) South Korea (2 decades already including the heartbreaking shot of Lee Sang Min?) Iran (too impossible especially if complete line up) China (Impossible). Extras: Lebanon (They haven't faced this team yet but it will be tough as well) Japan (They're getting tougher everytime) Qatar (Unpredictable)

I have to disagree with you.

Luck could really be a factor this time ...... anything could happen at this year's FIBA-Asia .... being grouped with China and lesser-strength teams and a bracket which is not as competitive as the other gives our team a very great opportunity to advance far.
Jordan is not the same team under Palma and is still adjusting under Baldwin. The financial problems the team is still in is distracting the players.

South Korea is a great team who improved its defense thru Lenny Wilkins but having a former superstar player as its head coach has its drawbacks, there"s trouble in the locker room as Hur Jae is expecting his players to be like him which is creating tensions within.

Iran is now worried as both Kamrami and Bahrami are not 100% fit and is far from the game they expected them to be.

China is badly hit by injuries that befell its players this near to the tournament proper. They have not played as a complete team since the infamous brawl they had with Brazil.

Lebanon is really in the brink, their star players refuse to suit up, they are still brewaking-in their naturalized player who is more of a Forward than a Center. Then their financial troubles derailed their training plans.

Japan is a mystery as their coach has not played their Team A as a whole team in public for some time. The players being out of action for a long time since the JBL season was cancelled after the earthquake and tsunami tragedy could either be a blessing or a dissaster for them.

Qatar except for Ngombo is now a very old line-up. Even though they'll have Leslie as their "new" naturalized player, he is not used of not having other foreign imports playing with him.

Chinese-Taipei is troubled as they might be without 3 of their dependable bigmen in Wuhan as all of them are nursing an injury.

Syria will be without its Best Player and Top Scorer as he was kicked-out of the team by the new Head Coach and the team members is really distracted with the on-going civil unrest in their country.
But despite these said lucky breaks or circumstances, its up to our team to take advantage of the situation and for our team to cope-up with our own troubles.

But I do like our chances .....

Third Place is not too far fetched for the current lot. Depending on the breaks. Noting that the strengths of the first five teams are almost similar when you go down to the first 7 players, Pinas now with the updated Euro style of ball adding the Pinoy "diskarte". I am hoping first to third.

Nagkausap kami nung asst. coach ng tall blacks at ito and sinuggest niya na gawin ng Pinas na ginawa nila laban sa Tsina:
(Trans: suggestions for team pinas)
Team China went down against the Tall blacks in one of their most lopsided games, play aggressive, snatch the victory as they will not willingly give it to us via basket to basket tradeoffs, and the little things on the court counts- hustle plays, boxing out, committing to the shot. China plays to a certain tempo, if we catch that tempo and alter it with hustle plays, they are hard up adjusting to a new rythm. :):):)

but I know the coaching staff know this already.;););)
Good Luck team Pinas.

a flash forward from year 3242 ?

Realistically, 5-8th finish is the worst finish in this tourney. The Best is 3rd-4th finish. Well, 1st-2nd place is impossible especially with mediocre talents Gilas had. There's no God's grace or luck in this tourney --- it's all talent and team effort. If they lose in the QF...then goodbye 2012, hello 3242.

@ Rubysushis A Qila flexibility from before the Jones Cup to see very clearly, and the Philippines in recent years the national team the whole is relatively smooth, long-term training under the A Qila and the importance of more functional, not simply just can jump, irrigation, can do more things.

Simply to say smart gilas lacks deeper bench and size ;)

How far we'll get depends on how agweyar(:D) would perform...
He will be a factor. That is if he plays well.

The question really is, with the arrival of De Ocampo and Williams, is that if he even have enough playing time :(

This is all on Toroman, of course. Does he even trust the young guy?

who asian teams fear the most?

its obvious:D:cool:

its also the guy who all the real nt fans/basketball community/forumers worries/watch/high expectations the most:eek:

its all in your hands pre:eek:
