let's talk here about the next season of UAAP..
with Greg Slaughter now with Ateneo
and we can now see Norberto Torres for De La Salle plus Alinko for UP and the core of Under 18 team now will play for NU ( i am not sure though) plus Rayray Parks... i can say that next year's UAAP will be one for the books...

After a 0-14 record, UP cage program in disarray

A runner-up finish in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), a decent showing in pre-season collegiate games, an extraordinary training exposure overseas and a solid recruitment program in place with promising players suiting up next season in celebration of University of the Philippines' 25th anniversary of its last championship.

For a brief period, the Fighting Maroons looked every bit a title contender in the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men's basketball tournament with Aboy Castro and his troops ready to bring their game to the next level.

At least for several months, Final Four atmosphere was experienced by the UP community. It was reminiscent of its lone UAAP caging title in 1986 when the squad was then led by Benjie Paras and Ronnie Magsanoc, two members of the PBA's 25 Greatest Players, promising guard and former pro-turned-champion coach Eric Altamirano and Joey Guanio.

Early this year, the Fighting Maroons, under the brand name Pharex, were able to sneak their way into the championship round of the PBL PG Flex-Erase Placenta Cup.

Aside from that solid PBL stint, the Fighting Maroons had a decent pre-season campaign, giving Castro and his wards enough reasons to feel confident in the coming UAAP basketball wars.

And then, there was a one-of-a-kind training in the world-renowned basketball academy – the Abunassar Institute of Basketball – the same institution attended by NBA superstars Chauncey Billups, Kevin Garnett, Baron Davis, and Andrei Kirilenko.

Everything seemed to be working according to Castro's plan.

"I was one of those who built the program starting 2008," Castro told GMANews.TV in a telephone interview. "I helped them out even in terms of finding people who will fund the program. It's a nice program."

But then, on hindsight, it was as good as it was going to get.

After only two games in the UAAP men's basketball tourney, matches that the Fighting Maroons lost, Castro was removed as the team's coach.

What went wrong? Why remove the man who started the program?

"Honestly, I have no idea. I cannot answer that because I am no longer part of that program. It's been more than two months since I was removed from the program," said Castro. "And I must say, it's been a great 64 days for me since then."

School loses top prospect
No less than the best high school player today, Kiefer Ravena, has expressed interest in joining UP next season.

Ravena is the son of former PBA player and now Talk 'N Text assistant coach Bong Ravena. The elder Ravena and Castro already had a mutual understanding that the RP Youth team mainstay will play for the Fighting Maroons beginning next season.

Now that Castro is out and the school's basketball program is in disarray, Ravena has decided to play elsewhere.

"Me, Bong and his son are almost seeing each other everyday. Bong and I are, of course, under one team, Talk 'N Text. I've already had a word with them regarding Kiefer's planned inclusion with the UP Maroons. But now that I'm no longer part of the program, it seems that Kiefer is not interested in joining (UP) anymore. I am the one talking to them and we had an initial agreement. Now, it seems he's headed to another (school)," said Castro.

The elder Ravena said his son is focusing in the coming UAAP juniors championship. The younger Ravena is the top player of the Ateneo Eaglets, who are aiming for a third straight crown this season against the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs.

"For now, his focus is on the coming finals," said the elder Ravena. "We have yet to decide on which team he will play or to which school he will enroll. All I want is the best opportunity for my son. A school where he can learn on the course that he wants to pursue and a school he wants to play for."

Resident players leaving UP?
Two players who underwent residency and are scheduled to play next season for the Fighting Maroons are now about to leave the squad.

Fil-American Chris Hawkins Ball, nephew of former PBA superstar Bong Hawkins of the Alaska Aces, and Nigerian center Ifaeanyi Mbah, are the two promising players who are about to suit up for the Fighting Maroons along with Ravena.

Ball stands 6-foot-5 while Mbah is a 6-foot-8 slotman and the two players will certainly provide the height and heft to boost the Fighting Maroons' chances next season.

But an alumnus who has helped the team in his personal capacity said that several players, who underwent residency for the past two years, are now thinking of not playing for the Fighting Maroons next season.

"First, it was coach Aboy who recruited them and not all conditions which were agreed upon when coach Aboy was still the coach of UP, are being followed presently," said the alumnus, who requested anonymity.

One of those resident players said that his allowances are now delayed for three to four weeks. Worse, some of them are being advised to move out of the athletes' quarters, which was provided by UP.

"I don't know why they're treating us like this. And then they will expect us to play our hearts out yet we are treated like this," said the player. "There were times we were prevented from getting food."

The same alumnus source said that the school's football team were adequately provided lodging and allowances unlike the basketball team where some of the resident players are getting frustrated and appeared headed elsewhere.

What's next for UP's basketball program?
After only two games this season, Castro was replaced by Boyet Fernandez, who was ironically taken in by the former as a consultant after UP's first game.

"I was looking for a consultant and then coach Boyet became available because Sta. Lucia was bought by Meralco," said Castro.

Not even Fernandez's winning ways could revitalize the Fighting Maroons' waning spirit as they themselves were visibly affected by the controversy surrounding the team.

In the end, the Fighting Maroons lost all their remaining games and suffered yet another dismal winless season, the second time since 2007.

While the Fighting Maroons were experiencing such debacles, Castro was getting one of the biggest breaks of his basketball career. Upon Virgil Villavicencio's appointment as Meralco's team manager he moved up from being an assistant with the Tropang Texters to the team's new manager.

"It's a great opportunity for me. It's nice to be part with a great bunch of coaches and players. It's also a great opportunity for me to learn from my bosses led by Manny V. Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas," said Castro.

Now UP's basketball program appears to be back to square one and neither Castro nor Fernandez will be there to handle the school next season.

Castro said he is unaware of the problems being experienced by the resident players.

"I'm not aware of that anymore. All I know is that I made sure that everything is already in place, including the allowances of the players as well as the place they will live in," said Castro.

An alumnus source added that because of command responsibility, the three people who are in charge of the school's basketball affairs – Atty. Jake Castro, Chitong Rivera and Bert Mendoza – should tender a courtesy resignation after the team's 0-14 record.

"They should resign as a sign of courtesy so the school will have a clean slate," said the source.

But another alumnus who had previous involvement in the school's basketball program said that these three people who headed UP's basketball affairs in the UAAP this season were mere volunteers and were helping the school in their personal capacity.

"These three individuals have great track records as far as the school's alumni is concerned. They've been helping the school in their own capacity. For example, Atty. Castro is a member of the Judicial and Bar Council, making him a very credible person," said the alumnus, who also requested anonimity.

GMANews.TV tried to reach Atty. Castro for comment, but our calls weren't answered. - JVP/OMG, GMANews.TV

Bakit ba kasi tinanggal si Castro? You can't judge a team after 2 games. Tsk tsk. Sayang. Hindi ba sila aware na sa NCAA (USA), madalas na nangyayari pag pinatalsik ang coach na nag recruit sa isang player, usually lilipat narin ng school yung player, kahit naka pirma na siya sa letter of intent.

Don't forget a translation to English, please!

No offense but UP basketball program and sports program is a joke. Imagine, our state university sports program is not competitive, unlike other countries were if you call it a State university, they are not just good in academics but also excel in sports. A person should always be balance both mentally, spiritually and physically and sad to say UP does not show that balance. I love UP education but I pity there sports program. Honestly it is embarrassing to the whole world too see a state university sports program, sucks and what is more embarrassing they only excel on cheering competition with no team to cheer. :D

This is rather sad. Though I never studied in UP, I find it appalling that a university which prides itself as "scholar ng bayan" (which I believe is an apt monicker) cannot meet its objective of having a basketball program that would command respect to other teams in the UAAP league. I think there are just too many intelligent persons running the show and each person does not want to be overshadowed by the others. Ika nga eh, maraming matatalino. Little humility would help.

even though mediocre our school consistently finish top 3 in uaap overall standings although there should be a campus or a program where UP is focusing on training this athletes and giving them good education ala Australia Institute of Sports

Here is my take on season 74. Barring injury, I am predicting that 3 of the 4 schools in this years final 4 will return to the final 4 in season 74. That will be FEU, ADMU and DLSU. The last spot in the final 4 will be a toss up between Adamson and NU. The recurring theme among the top schools is who they will drop from varsity to make room for the new studs while other schools struggle to sign blue chip players.

Do not sell FEU short next season. They have an awesome set of recruits cooling their heels in team B for the last couple of years. The team can have as many as 4 new players who can start for most UAAP team next season. Start with their Cameroonian big man who stands 6' 10" but can he take the pounding inside with his slight frame? To take care of the rebounding and inside game, Russell Escoto and Arvie Bringas will patrol the paint. Chester Tolomia will be contribute from the backcourt and be the back-up to Garcia, Romeo, Exciminiano and Knuttel. The real big question for next season is who will be demoted from varsity given that only 1 or 2 spots will be vacated by players completing their eligibility. Will Montinola bring in a new coach if Capacio fails to win this years championship?

DLSU will finally have their big man in Fil-Canadian Norbert Torres from Toronto. Dindo Pumaren will also have the luxury of shoring up their "security guard" corp with Dan Sara of the youth team and the comebacking LA Revilla both at point. Expect AVO and Louie Vigil to finally matriculate. The other Fil-imports of DLSU will wait another year or two due to residency requirements. Will former Blue Eaglet Ael Banal land in Taft after not getting enough love from Norman Black and supposedly turning down a lucrative incentive from NU.

Norman Black announced who are the blue chip recruits for ADMU next season. There is Tallo from Cebu, Gwynne Capacio is already enrolled in Katipunan, Von Pessumal and Kiefer Ravena already have lockers in Moro. Hopefully, Oping Sumalinog comes back from his ACL injury and there is big man Greg Slaughter. Norman Black is not finished with his recruiting and hopes to bring additional scoring from either other UAAP schools despite the Soc Rivera rule, former AHS players or elevate somebody from team B. Hellooooo Kevin Ferrer. :p

Eric Altamirano finally coaching NU was the worse kept secret in the UAAP. Now all the junior national players can finally don the uniform of NU. Labingisa, Neypes, Ray Parks and maybe even Kevin Ferrer. There are other transfer players in team B who are currently red shirting like Penola and other former NCAA players. But does NU have enough big men to compete with the top 3 schools mentioned above? Mbe may not be enough in the long run. Does Park only have to sit out 1 year for residency? He played 3 years of high school ball in Memphis and if the Cardona rule is applied correctly, he has to sit out an additional year.

Ray Parks playing for NU was a pure business decision by the Parks family. Have you guys heard of the Danny Manning saga at Kansas. Danny Manning was the top high school player coming out of high school. To the surprise of everybody, coach Larry Brown taps the father of Danny Manning to be one of his assistant coaches despite limited experience and the son eventually follows the father to Lawrence Kansas. Altamirano and the Sy family made an offer that the Parks family could not refuse. The father gets a good paying gig with NU and Ray is showered with perks that few schools could match even if they wanted too. Let's face it, Ray Jr. is good but he is not going to end up playing for a top division I school and become a star player. More like a role player in college but with his size and ability, he will be a star in Philippine basketball.

UP needs a miracle. For starters, the administration has to shore up the foundation of their basketball program. Who will make the decision, the school authority or the people financing the ill funded basketball program? Big man Alinko is set to complete his residency requirements but he was hardly a factor in this past seasons preseason games. The team have players doing residency, size courtesy of a transfer player from West Negros and a Fil-Am shooter. The other Fil-Am recruits must still complete their residency but they are being hotly pursued by a UAAP team with very deep pockets, think platinum cards, according to the family of a UP player.

All this talk of Kiefer going to UP is plain hogwash. This is Aboy Castro's press release to get back at those who ousted him. Can somebody answer these questions. Who is the prime backer of the ADMU team? Who pays the salary of Aboy Castro now or as an assistant coach in the PBA? Who pays the salary of Bong Ravena? Enough said.

When it comes to recruiting, the UAAP is the final destination of the top blue chip players in the Philippines with the exception of SBC and San Sebastian. The Pampanga connection of the Pineda family will funnel the top provincial players to Baste. Other UAAP schools are salivating to recruit the Red cub players and some may not be accomodated at the den like Sara and de la Cruz last season. Then again, SBC does a good job recruiting Fil-imports and the NCAA has more lenient residency rules than the UAAP.

I think Christian Sentcheu the 6'10" Cameroonian improved his build. I saw his photos at facebook and I could tell that he has built a lot of muscle. Not like before where he was very skinny. Now he got a lot of "cuts." Just my thought. Not sure on his game though. Here is a video on youtube where he practices his post up plays.

you're kinda under estimating bobby parks sir. .i think he will probably will be a starter in a mid-major program and produce a pretty good stats, thats if he will still pursuing DIV.1 basketball. .

Season 74 recruits ADMU

Season 74 recruits ADMU

Questions, Sir BLUE_HORSE :) Who would be graduating from the current Blue Eagles? Eric Salamat and Jumbo Escueta have used up their eligibilty so that's 2. Eman Monfort,in his 5th year in college but as far as I remember, missed 1 year when he was demoted to team B and I know Chris Tiu was still there in Ateneo (2007?) So Eman would be returning for his 5th yr as the primary PG for Season 74 w/ Juami as back-up and either Kiefer or another blue chip guard taking up the 3rd PG slot. How about Tonino and Bacon? They are 4th yr seniors now so will they return for their 5th years? And add to that, their batchmate in #15 Carlo Balmaceda with Sumalinog returning, there's a total of 4 slots in Team A, am I correct in my assumptions? And what a waste if we let another blue eaglet go in Ael Banal. What is Norman's beef against Ael? Or maybe against his father? His game translates to a future Larry Fonacier. Such a waste if we let him go.And how about the rumors of San Beda Red Cub Ace Guard Baser Amer wanting to be part of the Blue Eagles as the PG of the future considering the SBC senior's team is loaded w/ PGs in Villahermosa, Caram and Melo Lim?The jump from the Red den to the BLue nest have been more than okay for former red cubs turned Blue Eagles (LA Tenorio, Ford Arao, Yuri Escueta, Nico Salva and most recently, Arthur Dela Cruz)

My ADMU UAAP Season 74 Lineup
(10) holdovers
PG-Monfort-Tiongson
SG-Long-De Chavez
SF-Buenafe-Dela Cruz
PF-Salva-Golla
C-Chua-Erram

Rookies/Recruits(6) + 1*
PG/SG- Baser Amer (SBC)
PG/SG- Kiefer Ravena (ADMU)
SG/SF -Gwyne Capacio (DLSZ)
SG/SF- Ael Banal (ADMU)
SG/SF- Von Pessumal (ADMU)
PF/C - Greg Slaughter (UV)

* SF/PF - Mark Tallo (Cebu)

How about Jeric Estrada of SSC-R who is also part of team A right now? And with your comment on Kevin Ferrer of UST and the rumors with Jeron Teng of Xavier wanting to go to Ateneo too, that would be a very loaded lineup as Kirk Long would also play his last year with Monfort, Sumalinog, maintaining the continuity and the pipeline churning more 5 star and 4 star recruits.
If Ateneo wins Season 73 over FEU and with that kind of a future lineup, it is a dynasty in the making, maybe rivaling or surpassing the 5-peat of San Sebastian as Buenafe, Salva and Chua will improve and will be much more dominating. Perennial finals dates with NU and DLSU brewing.

This post is open for comments, suggestions and violent reactions but answers and clarifications are most welcome!:p
