Hungry Tigers devour Bulldogs for win No.2

MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas devoured a hapless National University side, 104-89, in Thursday’s UAAP men’s basketball game at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Gutom ang mga players ko, lahat gutom. Kahit na yong pitong beterano at maging ang siyam na rookies gutom din," said Growling Tigers coach Pido Jarencio, who earned his second win in season 72.

“At alam ninyo naman ang tigre kapag gutom lahat kinakain," he added.

Leading the fight for the Tigers, who led in the entire match, was an angry Dylan Ababou who used his anger as his motivation in posting a career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds.

“Mainit ang ulo ko. Galit ako," was Ababou's reply when asked what motivated him to score that much. “Galit ako sa sarili ko dahil ang sama ng inilaro ko sa unang game naming."

Ababou only scored 10 markers in the Tigers’ 76-75 win over the Adamson Falcons last week.

Being the Tigers’ captain, Ababou said he was upset with his opening game performance and wanted to redeem himself in the eyes of his rookie teammates. “Ako kasi ang team captain, tapos ang sama nung nilaro ko. Gusto ko kasing madala ang team sa Final Four."

“Iba kasi na this time ako ang leader. At bihira ang ganitong opportunity na mag-lead ka ng isang team."

Scores

UST 104 - Ababou 30, Mirza 19, Teng 14, Fortuna 14, Maliksi 10, Green 7, Afuang 4, Cam 2, Ungria 0, Rushdy 0, Felix 0, Camus 0, Bautista 0, Aytona 0.

NU 89 - Singh 19, Baloran 19, Hermosisima 15, Terso 10, Manito 8, Malanday 7, Ponferrada 6, Batac 3, Luy 2, Roy 0, Magat 0, Fabula 0, Cabaluna 0.
Quarter scores: 31-24, 62-49, 88-68, 104-89.

Ababou even inspired his teammates, especially Khazim Mirza to post another double-double finish with 19 points and 15 rebounds while Jeric Teng and Allein Maliksi contributed 14 points each.

UST started out slow but when its offense went it full gear, the Tigers left behind the Bulldogs and coasted to victory as NU just could not get their own game plan going.

The Tigers used a 14-2 run, early in the first quarter, to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 20-8 advantage midway in the opening period and were never threatened after that. They posted their biggest lead at 88-65 at the start of the third quarter.

“Mabuti na lang at nag-step up si Dylan. Kasi hindi maganda ang depensa namin. I asked the boys to limit the other team to just 15 points per quarter. Hindi ko alam kung bakit naka-89."

The UST defense limited Bulldogs’ center Jewel Ponferrada to just six points while NU rookies Ajeet Singh and Melvin Baloran led the Sampaloc-based quintet with 19 markers apiece.

“I know that it will be a high-scoring game," said Jarencio regarding the first 100-point game this season. “Pero ang hindi ko inaasahan ay yong umiskor sila ng malaki. Ang sabi ko sa kanila ay limit the opponents to just 15 points per quarter."

“Yong ang dapat naming paghandaan sa susunod naming game, yong defensive lapses namin," Jarencio ended. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

Slow-starting Ateneo rallies to beat UE, 72-57, for 2nd win

07/16/2009 | 08:12 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo showed championship poise Thursday overcoming a slow start to post a 72-57 win over University of the East in the 72nd UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

The team at the start can’t figure out how to defend against a team that shoots from anywhere. Or sometimes at your face

– Norman Black, Ateneo coach

“We started slow," said Ateneo coach Norman Black, who is aiming to steer the Blue Eagles to their second straight title.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini led Ateneo’s comeback to help the Katipunan-based squad to their second straight win to tie University of Santo Tomas, which earlier coasted to a 104-89 triumph over National University, on top of the standings.

Black said Ateneo was not used to playing against a team that plays open basketball. UE’s running-game surprised Black and his Eagles as the Red Warriors enjoyed a 28-11 lead early in the second quarter.

“The team at the start can’t figure out how to defend against a team that shoots from anywhere. Or sometimes at your face," said Black.

“And because of that, we have a problem in our transition defense. “It was our tendency to gamble a bit."

But once the Blue Eagles got their bearing, Ateneo slowly pulled away.

Still down 45-41 in the third quarter, Al-Hussani scored nine of his 11 third quarter points to lead a 13-0 Ateneo attack as the Blue Eagles built a 54-45 heading into the final period.

Emman Monfort and Raymond Austria nailed consecutive three-pointers at the start of the fourth to push the Eagles’ lead to 14, 62-48.

The Ateneo defense also limited UE’s production to just two points in a four-minute span. The Warriors never recovered from there and scored their last six points from the free throw line.

“Pinupuwersa ko ang mga shots ko, ganoon din ang mga teammates ko sa start ng laban," said Al-Hussaini “But coach told us to take our time."

“Nung nakuha na namin ang galaw ng UE, naging madali na sa amin," added Baclao, who finished with 11 rebounds and three assists.

Val Acuña, who led the Warriors in the first half with 19 points, could only muster two points in the third quarter and was held scoreless in the final period.

UE’s 17 turnovers also failed to help the Warriors’ cause. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

Ababou Leads UST Past NU In High-Octane Matchup

by Mia Domingo

UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas, led by its experienced leader, dished out its vaunted running game for all to see.

Dylan Ababou posted a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds to help lead his Growling Tigers past National University, 104-89, in a high-octane showdown in UAAP Season 72 at the Araneta Coliseum last July 16.

The Philippine Developmental Team member, who was held to just 10 points in UST’s opener, exploded for 23 in the first half alone as coach Pido Jarencio’s wards zipped through the porous NU defense en route to a season-high 62 points. As if that wasn’t enough, the Sampaloc outfit allowed the Tigers to shoot an outrageous 63.2 percent field goal clip in the third quarter.

Khasim Mirza aptly supported Ababou with a double-double of his own, canning 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Rookie sensation Jeric Teng also joined in the scoring fray, tallying 13 of his 14 total markers in the first quarter alone.

NU, which convincingly shut down University of the Philippines last Sunday, succumbed to the España quintet’s run-and-gun, smallball offensive and failed to put the clamps on the defensive end. Ajeet Singh and Mervin Baloran scored 19 apiece for the 1-1 Bulldogs, who next play University of the East on Sunday.

After the game, UST coach Pido Jarencio said, “Buti nagstep up si Dylan kasi medyo non-factor nung 1st game. Nawala na yung first game jitters. Sabi ko nga, Philippine Team ka, medyo na relieve ako dahil dinala nya yung team ngayon.”

With the victory, the Black and Gold find themselves atop the team standings at 2-0. Their next assignment will be against defending champions Ateneo de Manila on Sunday.

The scores:

UST 104 – Ababou 30, Mirza 19, Teng 14, Fortuna 14, Maliksi 10, Green 7, Mariano 4, Afuang 4, Cam 2, Ungria 0, Rushdy 0, Felix 0, Camus 0, Bautista 0, Aytona 0.

NU 89 – Singh 19, Baloran 19, Hermosisima 15, Terso 10, Manito 8, Malanday 7, Ponferrada 6, Batac 3, Luy 2, Roy 0, Magat 0, Fabula 0, Cabaluna 0.

Quarter scores: 32-24, 62-49, 88-68, 104-89.

* Its too early to tell, but with ADMU going past two of its toughest opponents, I think the possibility of a rare sweep is not too far off.

* Nonoy Baclao with another 11 rebound performance, and gad knows how many rebounds. He is truly the "Defense Minister" of the collegiate ranks.

* Another offensive monster game from Rabeh, against the best frontline in collegiate basketball. Will a back to back MVP also culminate in a back to back championship for ADMU?

* The veteran duo of Llagas and Espiritu were no match to one of the best local frontline combination of all time in Baclao and Al-Husseini. Baclao handles the defense, while Rabeh handles the offense. Terrific combination.

Ateneo Bucks Slow Start, Claws Past UE

by Mia Domingo

ATENEO DE MANILA turned a horrendous start into a statement game.

After trailing by as many as 17 points, the defending UAAP champions turned up the heat and dominated the inside en route to a 72-57 hammering of University of the East in Season 72 at the Araneta Coliseum last July 16.

The Blue Eagles looked like sitting ducks in the first quarter as coach Lawrence Chongson’s troops fired away from three-point territory, going 5-for-11 and holding their opponents to 20 percent shooting from the field.

A rejuvenated Ateneo squad came out strong in the second quarter, with reigning Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Eric Salamat combining for 14 points to trim the Red Warrior lead to two heading into the break. Val Acuña and Paul Lee helped extend the UE advantage to seven early in the third quarter, but back-to-back stabs from Al-Hussaini and Nonoy Baclao forced the first deadlock of the game at 45-all with 5:28 left in the period.

It was all Blue and White from that point on as Ateneo fed the 6’7” Al-Hussaini the ball down low in a blatant attempt to take advantage of UE’s lack of ceiling. The Recto outfit also tapered off in the third, shooting just 19 percent from the field. In the final 10 minutes, Ateneo pulled away after Bacon Austria and Emman Monfort opened the final canto with booming treys, giving the Katipunan quintet a 60-48 lead at the 8:49 mark.

Al-Hussaini topscored for the 2-0 Blue Eagles with 27 points and 11 boards, while Salamat finished with 12 markers. The Ateneo defense put an end to UE’s first quarter shooting party, limiting it to 29.3 percent from the field overall. Coach Norman Black’s squad also forced the Warriors to commit 17 turnovers, six more than their own output.

Acuña paced UE with 21 points, while Lee had 14.

In the pressroom, Black said, “We adjusted by not gambling so much on our shots, so we could defend well. I think we did a better job in the second half. We played better defense, we [also] shot better in the second half when we were moving the basketball and we became patient.”

Ateneo next plays University of Sto. Tomas in a battle of undefeated teams on Sunday, while 1-1 UE takes on National University two hours before.

The scores:

Ateneo 72 – Al Hussaini 27, Salamat 12, Baclao 10, Reyes 7, Salva 6, Monfort 3, Austria 3, Gonzaga 2, Chua 2, Tiongson 0, Long 0, Buenafe 0.

UE 57 – Acuña 21, Lee 14, Reyes 7, Llagas 6, Espiritu 6, Zamar 3, Lingganay 0, Flores 0, Ayala 0, Alabanza 0.

Quarter scoring: 11-23, 35-37, 54-48, 72-57.

Looks like DLSU will kiss Final 4 goodbye

I hope I'm wrong but, DLSU is on a real big hump:D

FEU 65 - DLSU 51

Total domination by the Tamaraws. And RR "Mongoose" Garcia really stepped up:)

With the team losing right now, no wonder news about the DLSU Green Archer's games has been very sparse in the forums right now ..... Unlike last year, when news used to be so fast ...... LOL

Hot-shooting Blue Eagles claw Tigers for solo UAAP lead

MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo coach Norman Black likened his shooters like Emman Monfort, Eric Salamat and Ryan Buenafe to manna from heaven.

"They are blessings to the team," said Black after the Blue Eagles clawed the UST Growling Tigers with a 93-77 win on Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

"These players help lift the pressure out of Rabeh (Al-Hussaini, Ateneo’s prized slotman)," added Black, whose wards posted their third straight win in the UAAP Season 72 men's basketball tournament.

And against the gritty Tigers, the three shooters took the cudgels for Al Hussaini who was utilized by Black sparingly because of foul trouble. The hot-shooting trio kept the Blue Eagles competitive despite their top center playing for only 21 minutes.

"I have to seat out Rabeh because he was in foul trouble early in the match, but my shooters were a blessing in disguise, especially now that Chris Tiu is out of the team," explained Black referring to his top player when they bagged the title last year.

"Last year the defense was somehow pointed on Rabeh and Chris, this year the other teams will have to put extra effort guarding my shooters and my big man," Black noted.

Monfort, a 20-year-old find from Iloilo who sat out last year and played for the Eagles' team B, finished with a career-high 20 points, 18 of which he earned from beyond the arc.

Monfort and Salamat did the damage for the Blue Eagles in the first three quarters. Afterwards, Buenafe took over and teamed up with Juami Tiongson and Nico Salva as the Eagles completed the romp and gave UST its first defeat in three matches.

"Nagbunga na ang aking pagsisikap," said Monfort after leading all Ateneo scorers. "I played for team B last year and it was a learning experience. Ngayon handa na ako dito sa team A."

And with Monfort and his teammates sinking 11 of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc, the Eagles seized a 78-56 lead midway into the last quarter of the game they dominated all throughout.

It was only early in the first quarter that the Growling Tigers were able to keep up with the Eagles.

Black said Monfort opted to play in Ateneo's team B in order to hone his skills as a point guard.

"There was no question that he is a shooter, but he needed to train his skills as a point guard," Black noted.

Black was glad that the Eagles’ scoring was not limited to his top players, adding that they still have to intensify their offense to address some of the flaws.

"Defensively, we have no problems but we have to focus on some aspects regarding our offense," Black said.

That defense was instrumental in forcing the Tigers to 27 turnovers, which Ateneo converted into 16 points. - GMANews.TV

Warriors take bite out of Bulldogs

MANILA, Philippines - Rudy Lingganay showed that he can be counted on when the game is on the line, leading University of the East Red Warriors to a 73-59 win over NU on Sunday in the UAAP seniors basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Lingganay scored six of his 12 points in the last quarter to help the Warriors withstand the rally ignited by the Bulldogs that erased a 61-47 Warriors lead at the start of the fourth quarter to just eight, 63-55.

While Lingganay ensured the Warriors' triumph and their immediate comeback following a disheartening 72-57 defeat to defending champion Ateneo, veteran center Narciso Llagas and playmaker Paul Lee were instrumental in the Warriors’ exceptional performance in the second and third canto.

Llagas scored nine of his team-high 16 points in the third period to anchor the Warriors’ breakaway while Lee scored 13 of his 14 points in the second and third stanzas to hugely contribute to the Warriors’ cause of winning their second assignment in three matches.

"To just bounce back after that disheartening defeat against Ateneo is a big boost to our morale," said Warriors mentor Lawrence Chongson.

"We learned from that defeat to Ateneo, that we were doing a good performance in our defense but we need to hone our offense," Chongson added.

"And that is what we did today," Chongson noted.

The Warriors were actually down by three points after the first canto, but once their offense started to wax hot, the Bulldogs were unable to contain the onslaught by UE's veterans.

Chongson also said that their inability to protect their early lead against the Eagles was a big eye-opener.

"We did a very bad job in protecting our lead in the first half against Ateneo," said Chongson. "But against the Bulldogs, the boys were just superb in protecting our advantage."

And protect their lead the Warriors did.

"I told the boys to just focus," said Chongson after the Bulldogs won the first quarter. "And after we recovered, I told them not to be afraid of losing the lead but to just play and maintain the advantage."

The Bulldogs absorbed their second defeat after a rousing performance in their opening match that saw them demolishing the Maroons. - Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV
