I missed out Hermosisima. I guess I was too busy looking at the UP cheerleaders that time:D But I read somewhere that he is not exactly a rookie, but a transferee out of Baste (he was included in the Stags' 2005 roster). So he isn't exactly a young gun.

i heard that he is a rookie from davao... and it was eric tipan or his partner said that...

aldrich ramos improve tremendously. he has double double game against ateneo. that shows the training he got under coach toroman. we'll see more of aldrich ramos game as the season progresses. gee, coach toroman is good in developing players. it affects the players very well.

* The thing that struck me most about this game, is the fact that after Rabeh, it was two of the highly-regarded rookies last year that followed him, namely Ryan Buenafe and Nico Salva. Against a very tough team in FEU. I hope those two finally lives up to the hype they were in coming out of high school.

* After a good pre-season, JR Cawaling has gone missing again. Ryan clearly won the battle of the small forwards ....

Ateneo Pulls Off Escape Act Over FEU

by Mia Domingo

ATENEO DE MANILA University’s championship mettle was put to the test – one that it passed.

The Blue Eagles proved to be the more composed team down the stretch as they held off a late Far Eastern University charge, 63-59, in UAAP Season 72 opening weekend action at the Araneta Coliseum last July 12.

Ateneo sophomore Ryan Buenafe’s split charities from the free throw line with 13.6 seconds left proved to be the game-winner as Tamaraws rookie guard RR Garcia botched a contested three-pointer that would have sent the game into overtime.

Season 72 Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini converted on a couple of crucial baskets down the stretch that gave the Blue Eagles a seven-point edge, 61-54, after FEU had staged a rally to knot the game at 54-all. Al-Hussaini, playing in his final year, scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Before that sequence, Ateneo seemed to have the game under control, leading by as many as 12, 37-25, after a Nico Salva triple with 2:14 left in the first half. FEU veterans Aldrech Ramos and Mark Barroca, though, brought the Tams back to life. All in all, Ramos and Barroca tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Aiding the cause of the defending champions was Nonoy Baclao, who, despite being held scoreless, caromed 11 boards and swatted away five FEU shots. Returnee Emman Monfort was also a key cog off the bench, scoring eight points.

After the game, Ateneo coach Norman Black said, “We played pretty well in the first half. This is not a statement game because coming into the game, we knew we will be playing the toughest team in the league today, and this is a confidence booster that we beat them. FEU is very athletic and I’m glad we were able to match up with it. I hope we win a lot more. [Also, Monfort] has been playing really well in practice and I’m glad he delivered today.”

The scores:

Ateneo 63 – Al-Hussaini 18, Buenafe 10, Salva 9, Salamat 8, Monfort 8, Reyes 7, Long 3, Golla 0, Chua 0, Baclao 0, Austria 0.

FEU 59 – Ramos 15, Barroca 12, Noundou 9, Garcia 8, Cervantes 6, Cawaling 4, Sanga 3, Knuttel 2, Exciminiano 0, Eguilos 0, Caluag 0.

Quarter scores: 17-11, 40-29, 50-47, 63-59.

* I thought UP would do better this season, but it seems like they are still "Waiting for Godot", er, I mean, Mike "The Shelter" Silungan next season .... and Alinko after that season ..... Once those two come in, though, a Final Four appearance for UP?

* Looks like all that money that Henry Sy is pouring into NU is starting to take effect, with a couple of unheralded but effective rookies helping the team win .....

Bulldogs Take Fight Out of Sluggish UP

by Mia Domingo

LAST YEAR’s bottom team just sent quite a message to the entire UAAP.

National University banked on a solid second half of basketball to upend the University of the Philippines, 74-64, in Season 72 at the Araneta Coliseum last July 12.

The Bulldogs unleashed a 17-0 run to start the third period and led by as much as 26 points at the 6:16 mark, 70-44 via a short jumper by rookie LJ Malanday. That onslaught was led by yet another rookie, Kokoy Hermosisima. The freshman from Holy Cross Davao hit three triples after being held scoreless in the first half.

The Fighting Maroons, who actually led after the first 10 minutes of action, attempted to launch a fourth quarter comeback, albeit to no avail. Rookies Alvin Padilla and Carlo Gomez helped UP cut the lead to as low as 12 but came up short. A telling stat was the Diliman quintet’s miserable 37 turnovers.

Hermosisima led the Bulldogs with 12 points and six rebounds, while getting ample scoring support from three other Bulldogs who scored in double-figures. One of those Bulldogs was Malanday, who left a lot of supporters in awe thanks to his athletic ability. He posted 10 points, seven of them coming in the second quarter. Padilla and Gomez led the Maroons with 11 markers apiece.

During the postgame interview, NU coach Manny Dandan, said, “We wanted to win today, kasi during the off-season and pre-season, lagi kaming tambak sa UP. They were saying medyo bata pa ang mga players ko pero yung mga theories namin, nag-work. The players and the coaching staff did a tremendous job, the sleepless nights sa pagview ng tapes. This win is dedicated to the whole National University and of course Mr. Hans Sy.”

The scores:

NU 74 – Hermosisima 12, Singh 10, Ponferrada 10, Malanday 10, Luy 9, Batac 9, Baloran 9, Terso 4, Manito 1, Roy 0, Magat 0, Fabula 0, Cabaluna 0.

UP 64 – Padilla 11, Gomez 11, Ma. Reyes 9, Lopez 9, Co 9, Sison 4, Maniego 4, Hipolito 3, Mi. Reyes 2, Juruena 2, Gingerich 0, Gamboa 0, Astorga 0.

Quarter scores: 10-18, 36-29, 53-44, 74-64.

in juniors action, DLSZ beat AHS 100 - 78.

can't find any box score stats online but other forums suggest Zobel's 6'7 center Arnold Van Opstal was very intimidating defensively. he also scored 15 points including a few dunks. (haven't heard of UAAP juniors players dunking in games since Enrico Villanueva)

Kyle Neypes did a follow-up off a missed shot last year. Also Russell Escoto.

But yeah, Van Opstal might very well be the second coming of Japeth, only he's wearing green.

the game of coach pido's team was great...I think that should keep their eyes on the the growling tigers..

DLSU's game was ewan lang talaga...
i hope they will improve...

though i was disappointed that FEU loss to ADMU, i still think that that was a good game...

... and i thought of switching to Sky Cable to get their HD package. not worth it if the team i'm rooting for plays terrible, it makes it that much uglier in High-Def.

Not exactly a fan of high definition, do you want to see Andi Merk's and Magi King's face in high def? i dont think so
